The National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) encourages the use of biotechnology as a tool to solve needs of the Mexican countryside, said Harumi Shimada Beltrn, head of the National Laboratory for Plants under Controlled Conditions (PlanTECC), of the National School of Higher Studies (ENES) Lion.

He explained that the laboratory has greenhouses and growth chambers, in which you can carry out controlled, repeatable studies for companies and / or producers.

People associate biotechnology with transgenic plants, but it is much more than that, it is an area that can continue to be promoted in the country to improve agricultural production, he said.

He pointed out that if you understand how genes have an effect on fruit production, you can help change production and if you perceive how a pathogen works, you can expand the tools to control it.

PlanTECC, which began activities in 2016, is an inter-institutional effort between UNAM, the Center for Research and Advanced Studies (Cinvestav) of the National Polytechnic Institute, Irapuato unit, as well as the Center for Research and Assistance in Technology and Design of the State from Jalisco (CIATEJ).

In the laboratory in charge of the UNAM there are eight experts in agrogenomics, who carry out teaching activities in the Bachelor of Agrogenomic Sciences, in the ENES Len, in addition to students of the graduate degree in Biological Sciences and Sustainability Sciences, of the University .
