She speaks to me silently but I hear her so loudly: rider who lost sight credits horse for saving her life – Horse & Hound

July 12th, 2020 3:50 am

A rider who has overcome severe health issues including losing most of her sight says it is her horse Coco who is also partially sighted who has given her the strength to carry on.

Caroline Murphy told H&H she considered suicide at her lowest point when, having spent 10 years bed-bound with ME, or chronic fatigue, she was diagnosed with a condition that involves having too much fluid in the brain, which had permanently damaged her optic nerve.

She is now blind in her right eye and has very little vision in the left. She also suffers from hypermobility, degenerating discs in her back and neck, anxiety and depression.

When I became visually impaired, it was such a horrible situation, I attempted suicide, Caroline said. I spent 24 hours a day in my room, I had no life and I didnt want to be here any more.

Coco has literally saved my life.

Having decided she did not want to just rot in bed, and having ridden as a child, Caroline decided to find out whether she could get back in the saddle and she could.

She rode a gelding called Orbit at a local yard for some weeks, regaining her skill and confidence.

I was the happiest Id been in for ever, she said. I wanted to ride more and more, and then there was this horse.

Caroline said Coco had a reputation for spooking and spinning, but she wanted to ride her. And one week, she had her chance.

I was so nervous, but so excited, she said. I got on her, and it was like she knew me; Ive never felt a connection like that with a horse. It sounds silly but it was as if she said to me: I know what youre going through.

Caroline rode Coco more and more and eventually, was able to buy her. She signed up for her vets health plan, part of which was a general check.

We knew she had melanomas by her left eye, but in the right one, the vet found a lump. Shes completely blind in that eye, and of course that explains so much; she was spinning because she was trying to see out of her good eye.

Were both visually impaired and blind in the same eyes; I thought this is a new life for both of us.

Coco is undergoing treatment that, it is hoped, will improve the vision in her left eye, but Caroline said the 13-year-old mare has been happy on fun rides, jumping and a days drag-hunting that was incredible; we galloped all day and I never thought Id do anything like that as well as lessons with Paralympian Lee Pearson.

Shes my world, Caroline said. Shes been through the mill but she saved me so Im trying to save her too.

If anyone was considering a blind horse, or one with one eye, Id say dont be put off whatsoever. They might take a little longer to process things but shes the most sane horse ever.

Shes made so much difference to me. Im so embarrassed about the way I look but Im proud when Im out with her; shes made me so much more confident as a person. Shes changed too, I dont think either of us would recognise who we were before.

Ive been through a lot of trauma, and violence, and didnt know how to move through it but shes been my therapist you cant buy what a horse gives you.

She speaks to me silently but I hear her so loudly, and thats priceless.

And Caroline hopes her experiences might help others.

Its a cliche but there really is no such word as cant, she said. I never thought I could get on a horse again.

Set yourself goals, it doesnt matter if theyre way up in the sky but find a way to do it. Dont be afraid to ask for help, and theres a way round everything. I truly believe that.

Should You Have Immunity-Boosting Kadha, Turmeric Milk, Lemon Water Every Day? Experts Bust Some Myths – NDTV Food

July 12th, 2020 3:48 am

Highlights

Are you being forced to sip on a warm kadha in place of evening tea, or gulp down lemon water in place of cold drink, or end your day with haldi wala doodh? Believe us, this is the story of every household these days. The Coronavirus pandemic made us realise the importance of having a good immunity and parents are straining every nerve to ensure building immunity in children and family members. Some may be doing it with discretion while some may be going that extra mile making hasty decisions based on hearsay.

If you don't know how much you should be having these immunity-boosting drinks, don't worry. We consulted some nutritionists to crack the code for you. They gave us some tips and some dos and don'ts to get rid of our confusion and mystery around these homemade immunity boosters.

The many benefits of drinking kadha every day have been doing the rounds of late. It is made by boiling a range of whole spices in water for some time, straining it and drinking it like tea. Spices like cinnamon, cardamom, peppercorns, cloves, cumin etc. are used to make this all-spiced tea. It is believed that these Indian spices have an innate ability to boost our immune system. This may be true except these very spices are also very hot in nature. Clinical nutritionist Ishi Khosla warns, "over-consumption of such spices may lead to other health issues like stomach problems, digestion problems, nausea and skin dryness. She advises against drinking kadha every day or giving it a break for a few days after having it continuously for a long time." Having it every alternate day couple of times a week may sound like a good plan!

Kadha is made by boiling whole spices in water.

Turmeric (or haldi) is a gem of a food. It is true it greatly helps in building one's immunity but the same logic of over-consumption applies to turmeric as well. Ishi Khosla says, "if you want to have haldi wala doodh every day, you can, but make sure to add just a pinch of turmeric in your drink."

Turmeric milk is excellent for boosting immunity.

Lemon is a great source of vitamin C that plays a huge role in boosting the immune system, along with providing many other health benefits. Consultant Nutritionist Rupali Dutta says, "you can have the juice of up to 2 lemons a day for good health and strong immunity." However, you should know that lemon contains a high amount of citric acid which may affect the alkaline content of our body. Bangalore-based Nutritionist Dr. Anju Sood warns, "You should not have lemon juice if you are suffering from any gastric stress or extreme acid reflux."

Lemon water is a good source of vitamin C.

Stay healthy and safe with good immunity. But, don't make any rash diet mistakes that may do more harm than good.

3 Lifestyle Tweaks That Can Help Boost Your Immunity – Femina

July 12th, 2020 3:48 am

The author, Dr Manoj Kutteri, is the Wellness Director at Atmantan and has more than 20 years of experience in developing wellness programmes across India and overseas. He has extensive knowledge in mind-body medicine, Naturopathy, Ayurveda, Nutrition, Acupuncture, Yoga and Physical culture.

Image: 123RF

The immune system is our in-built army of cells and proteins that detects, registers and protects the body against any foreign bodies that may have invaded or entered it. It is responsible for keeping us healthy and illness free. The strength of the immune system determines the capacity of a person to tackle various physical, emotional, and environmental challenges.

With the COVID-19 pandemic spreading rampantly across the world, we need to focus on building up our immunity and actively seek a mindful lifestyle. However, it is not as easy as it sounds. The immune system is a complex mesh of several kinds of cells, each playing their role in defending the body against harmful microbes.

Image: 123RF

In addition to Naturopathic practices, here are small steps that you can take which reap astoundingly positive results:

The clich is true; your body is a temple, and you have to be careful of what you're feeding it.

While a once in a blue moon cheat day won't hurt, unmindful eating habits are the core reason for stunting the growth of your immune system. Nourish your body with vitamin-rich foods and give it sufficient amounts of fibre. Remember your immune system has nothing to do with the way your body looks.

For a healthy liver, cruciferous vegetables like Kale, Broccoli and Cabbage should be included in daily diet. A healthy liver ensures the body's natural detoxification process.

Getting your sleep cycle in sync is one of the biggest gifts you can give your body. The body requires about 8 hours of sound sleep to rejuvenate and reboot its systems. It has to be kept in mind that it's not only 8 hours of sleep, but the timely hours of sleep that matter too.

Often, we stress ourselves by staying up till 3 am thereby disrupting the normal functioning of our body that leads to obesity, stress, emotional imbalance and other illnesses.

Working out regularly has been scientifically proven to boost the immune system. Regular exercise mobilises the T cells, a type of white blood cell which guards the body against infection.

However, continuous rigorous workout weakens the immune system, leaving you prone to flu and viral infections. Low level of Vitamin D in the body has been termed as one of the significant reasons for respiratory problems. A brisk walk in the sunlight for 1015 minutes will ensure that enough Vitamin D is produced in the body.

These are simple but highly effective tweaks in your daily routine. The key is listening carefully to your body and conscious living, consistently.

COVID-19 Now Research Focus Of Health Database That Has Several Wisconsin Partners – WUWM

July 12th, 2020 3:46 am

A federal program trying to recruit 1 million people for medical research is launching an effort to learn more about COVID-19. WUWM's Chuck Quirmbach reports.

A federal program trying to recruit 1 million people for medical research is launching an effort to learn more about COVID-19. The Medical College of Wisconsin and some other health care outlets in the state are part of the program called All of Us.

All of Us began during the Obama administration and could cost $1.5 billion nationally over a 10-year period.

READ:In Return For Some DNA, Program Promises Medicine Eventually 'Tailored To You'

So far, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has gotten about 280,000 people to sign up for All of Us. Volunteering means allowing NIH confidential access to online medical records and to provide researchers with blood and urine samples. The hope is to build a diverse biomedical database that will lead to more individualized, or precision, disease prevention, treatment and care.

Enrollment for All of Us has been on hold for more than three months due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But program officials are about to start conducting antibody tests of the blood samples of at least the last 10,000 people who signed up for All of Us early this year.

Dr. Jeff Whittle is a professor of Medicine and the Medical College of Wisconsin's principal investigator for All of Us. He says the tests will look for antibodies, or disease-fighting proteins that formed in people who had the coronavirus at the time of giving the blood sample.

"It won't lead directly to effect treatment. It will help us to understand who are the higher-risk individuals for infection and at higher risk for becoming ill. It may help us target resources. It may help target testing. It may help us target vaccination because when a vaccine becomes available, there will be some groups that providers will be wanting to vaccinate sooner than others, Whittle said.

Whittle also told WUWM there may be a genetic link to how humans interact with the coronavirus."There may be markers on your cells, determined by genetics, that make you more or less likely to be infected. There may be aspects of how your immune system works, that are genetically determined, that may make you able to mount a more robust or less robust response."

Whittle says All of Us volunteers, in effect, already gave permission for their submitted blood samples to be tested for research. He says after the antibody study is conducted at Vanderbilt University, some participants may eventually be contacted for follow-up.

As for recruiting nationally 720,000 more people for All of Us, Whittle says people can call to begin preliminary sign-up. He says The Medical College of Wisconsin will schedule local appointments tobegin later this month.

Support for Innovation reporting is provided by Dr. Lawrence and Mrs. Hannah Goodman.

Do you have a question about innovation in Wisconsin that you'd like WUWM's Chuck Quirmbach to explore? Submit it below.

Stem Cells Used to Treat Severe Complications from COVID …

July 12th, 2020 3:44 am

Patients with COVID-19 have been observed to experience a wide variety of symptoms, ranging from a mild cough to acute respiratory failure. So,what causes the most severe cases of coronavirus infection? In some instances,COVID-19 fatalities occur when a patients own immune system inflicts too much damage on the individuals infected organs.

In a general sense, the immune system protects the body from pathogens througha seriesofchemical signaling networks. These signals are received by specificreceptor cells which in turn respond by enhancingimmune responses like inflammation, fever, and cell death. One type of chemical signal that is prevalent in the immune systems response to coronavirus is a cytokine. These tiny proteinscancarry outmany differentfunctions, but the most prevalenttype ofcytokine in coronavirus research is one that promotes inflammation.

In a healthyimmune system, the body must be able to recognize and control the intensity ofimmuneresponses bysignaling for the suppression of a response after its activation. This cycle of enhancing and suppressing immune functions keeps fevers from running too highandinflammation from damaging tissue. As people age, the immune cells that produce cytokines often become less efficient. In some of these patients, there is a lack of balance between signals that promote immune responses and signals that suppress them. When these individuals contract coronavirus, the immune systemmay beactivated in what is called a cytokine storm. During this process, cytokines are sent out in a surge that causes severe amounts ofinflammationin the lungs, leading to tissue damage. At this point, the virus may haveinfected other organs where increasing inflammationwilllead toevenmore damage. If there is a lack of signalingto stop this immune response, organ damage may besufficient to cause death. In patients at risk of experiencing this cytokine storm, professionals are considering using mesenchymal stem cells to prevent and repair tissue damage.

A stem cellis a specific kind of cell thatdoesnot have a specialized function in thebody.Instead, theyhave the potential to differentiate intomanyspecific types of cells, such as red blood cells or neurons. There are three main types of stem cells: embryonic, induced pluripotent, and adult. Adult stem cells, which are found in small quantities in all types of tissue in the human body, are most of interest to researchers seeking to treat COVID-19.Thesetypes ofcells are only capable of developing into limited types of tissue, likely the type that they already reside in. Mesenchymal stem cells(or MSCs)are a type of adult stem cell that may be derived fromseveraldifferent organs, including the bone marrow, fat, and umbilical cords. Theyhave the potential to become the cells that are responsible for creating bone, cartilage, or fat. Aside from their ability to differentiate into other cell types, MSCs have severalother properties that make them of interest in treating COVID-19. First, these stem cellscansuppress the activity of certain immune cells. Evidence suggests that through these functions, MSCs may be able to regulate inflammatory responses.Second, MSCscan secrete growth factors that stimulate the development ofsurrounding cells.

Trials are now taking place totest the efficacy ofMSCs to treat severecomplications from COVID-19. In these studies, MSCs are injected intoapatient experiencingrespiratory infection. The MSCs then accumulate in the lungs, where their regulatory properties counteract or prevent thecytokine storm. The stem cells regenerative properties also serve a purpose to repair and regrow damaged tissue.A recent study conducted in Beijing, China treated seven coronavirus patients who had either critically severe, severe, or normal reactions to the virus. All seven patients exhibited symptoms including shortness of breath, fever, and weakness. Within two days of their MSC transplant, these symptoms had disappeared in all the patients.Manysimilartrials are now being conducted in multiple different countries.

St Kitts-Nevis well represented in the field of Veterinary medicine – Loop News Cayman

July 12th, 2020 1:47 am

Now as a tenth-semester veterinary student at the Ross School of Veterinary Medicine, he believes he has unlocked the secrets that almost always guarantee ones success- hard work, commitment, and unwavering faith in God and sacrifice.

Shevaun was recently awarded the MU Small Animal Surgery Award at the University of Missouri.

He said this accomplishment has validated the years of sacrifice.

As a professional in a certain field, it is a refreshing feeling to be awarded for the work that you do. I used my knowledge obtained during my preclinical years at RUSVM in anatomy and surgical procedure not to just pass my small animal surgery exam, but to ace it and impress the surgery staff.

Shevaun said his pursuit of a career in veterinary medicine did not come as a surprise to his family and closest friends.

My mom started working at Veterinary Services at the Agriculture Department in 1995 and I was born in 1996. So Ive been at the veterinary Office my entire life. I wanted to be a veterinarian most of my life but at one point I realized Im terrified of large bovids (cows) So I had switched to culinary arts for a year or two but I talked to Dr Henry about it and he explained the method of restraining to me and then I went back to vet med.The young Vet said one of the greatest challenges he's encountered to date, is his battle with low self-esteem and the fact that he really didnt like to read.

Developing a sound and positive friend group really helped me develop my confidence and I feel like I had to start liking reading or else Because of my own experiences, I am very passionate about youth empowerment and helping other young people realise that theres no reason why they cant be who and what they want to be.

Shevaun hopes to one day own a restaurant.

As a child, he said this and other dreams seemed way beyond his reach, but hes grateful to know that with consistent commitment its only a matter of time before all of his dreams are realised.

I think my passion is fuelled by remembering the days when I thought there was no way I could ever be a veterinarian. I doubted the possibility and plausibility of this ever happening because of my financial/family background. Im grateful for my aunt Evelyn who saw greatness I didnt see in myself. She definitely changed my life.

Shevaun hopes to return home in September where he will begin work as an Associate Veterinarian at the Ministry of Agricultures Veterinary Services Department.

Considering the fluidity of the COVID-19 pandemic it remains to be seen if he would be allowed to return home on schedule, even so, Shevaun remains hopeful.

New initiative unifies the veterinary profession’s approach to sustainability – The Pig Site

July 12th, 2020 1:47 am

Vet Sustain has been set up in response to the pressing societal issues of climate change, biodiversity loss, public health threats and persistent animal welfare challenges. It meets the calls of the Vet Futures and VN Futures projects for the veterinary professions to increase their prominence and influence in sustainability. Recognising the unique One Health skill set and trusted position held by vets, vet nurses and members of the vet-led team, Vet Sustain has laid out its strategy for supporting the professions to create meaningful change through their work.

July 2020 will see the Vet Sustain team launch their strategy, veterinary sustainability goals and new website. The website includes a growing list of how-to guides, training resources and case studies designed to support veterinary professionals to promote environmental and ethical animal care and production.

Dr Laura Higham, Vet Sustain founder, said the social enterprise will provide a platform for the veterinary community to come together and take collective action.

Our profession already delivers a wide range of sustainability services to society, explained Higham. We understand the inextricable links between human, animal and environmental well-being. But its time for our influence and duty to reach beyond the patients under our care, to all animals that are impacted by human activity.

Dr Simon Doherty, a director of Vet Sustain and senior vice president of the British Veterinary Association, said that veterinary professionals occupy an extraordinary niche for driving the sustainability agenda. By taking steps such as reducing the carbon footprint of our veterinary operations, ensuring responsible medicine use and supporting regenerative forms of agriculture and aquaculture, vets can address the environmental and ethical impacts of our own activities and the sectors we influence.

The organisation is currently focused on three key topics through their working groups: food and farming, sustainability in veterinary education and the environmental footprints of veterinary practices. By embedding and mainstreaming sustainability planning and action into the veterinary agenda, Higham is confident that Vet Sustain can support veterinary professionals to become a leading force for sustainability.

To support a sustainable future, we must tackle climate change, and promote healthy and biodiverse ecosystems, Higham continued. The COVID-19 pandemic has given a recent stark reminder of the importance of protecting nature to also protect humanity.

Individuals and organisations interested in finding out more or supporting the growing organisation are encouraged to visit the Vet Sustain website, follow on social media or contact Laura Higham at: laura@vetsustain.org

Feed additives could mitigate the spread of deadly ASF – VeterinaryPracticeNews.com

July 12th, 2020 1:47 am

Feed additives might be the key to controlling a rapidly spreading animal virus that is killing the worlds pig population and threatening human food security.

This is according to a newly published study out of Kansas State University (KState). The research, led by Megan Niederwerder, DVM, PhD, assistant professor of diagnostic medicine and pathobiology in the universitys College of Veterinary Medicine, explores how antiviral chemical additives in food can help mitigate risk of African swine fever (ASF) transmission.

The findings, Dr. Niederwerder says, could be a game-changer for the global swine industry.

Over the last two years, ASF is estimated to be responsible for the death of at least 25 percent of the worlds pig population due to the emergence of the virus within China and subsequent spread to over 10 other Asian countries, she says. In 2019, we published the first report of African swine fever virus (ASFV) transmission through the natural consumption of plant-based feed. Our subsequent work has focused on mitigation of ASFV in feed through the use of chemical feed additives and heat treatment.

At this time, there are no commercially available vaccines or effective treatments to cure the disease caused by the virus, Niederwerder says. Thus, control of ASF instead focuses on biosecurity measures to prevent the introduction of the virus into negative countries or negative farms and regions within a positive country. Additionally, large-scale culling of infected or high-risk animals is used to contain the spread of ASFV.

Niederwerders team examined two different classes of liquid feed additives, including a medium-chain fatty acid-based additive and a formaldehyde-based additive, for efficacy against ASFV in cell culture and in feed ingredients, KState says. In general, both demonstrated evidence of reducing the virus infectivity, with data supporting dose-dependent efficacy.

While feed additives have historically been used to reduce the risk of bacterial contamination in feed, research thus far has not reported efficacy for the inactivation of African swine fever virus in feed ingredients, KState says.

Our new research reports novel data evaluating the efficacy of feed additives on inactivating ASFV in an in vitro cell culture model and a feed ingredient transoceanic shipment model, Niederwerder says. This will provide valuable information to the swine industry with regard to mitigating the risk of potential routes for introduction and transmission of ASFV through feed and ingredients.

While the results of the study are promising, she stresses the need for a multifaceted approach to reducing the risk of ASFV in feed, including sourcing ingredients from countries without the virus when possible and implementing consistent biosecurity protocols at feed mills.

Mitigating the risk of African swine fever virus in feed with antiviral chemical additives, which was funded by a grant from the Swine Health Information Center and the State of Kansas National Bio and Agro-defense Facility Fund, has been published in Transboundary and Emerging Diseases.

New OSU president hopeful that OSU-Cascades will partially re-open in fall – Bend Bulletin

July 12th, 2020 1:47 am

Oregon State Universitys new president cant definitively say what college life will be like this fall at his schools campuses in Bend and Corvallis if the campuses are open at all. But F. King Alexander knows that classes will resume at OSU and OSU-Cascades this fall despite the COVID-19 pandemic, whether online, in classrooms or with a mix of both.

Some institutions are throwing in the towel, saying, Lets start in the spring. Were not doing that, Alexander told The Bulletin.

On July 1, Alexander, 56, took over the universitys presidency from Ed Ray, who led OSU since 2003 and oversaw the construction of OSU-Cascades campus in 2016. Alexander previously served as the president of Louisiana State University for seven years, and also led California State University Long Beach, as well as Murray State University in rural Kentucky, before arriving in Baton Rouge.

The tentative plan for OSUs campuses is a hybrid of in-person and online learning, Alexander said. Ecampus an online learning system which was named the fifth best online bachelors degree program in the country by U.S. News and World Report this year will come in handy in case the university has to lean more toward online courses if the pandemic worsens, he said.

Weve ramped up our Ecampus, but it was already one of the best in the country, Alexander said.

Because OSU is on a quarter system, the fall term doesnt start until Sept. 23. That means Alexander will closely watch universities that start earlier, such as the University of Florida and University of Texas-Austin, to see what impacts COVID-19 has on those campuses, and adjust accordingly in Bend and Corvallis.

Nobody ever predicted that the quarter system would give us this kind of an advantage in this unusual environment, Alexander said.

OSU leaders plan to release their final plan about re-opening in the fall by mid-August at the latest, Alexander said.

While leading LSU where the local county has more COVID-19-related deaths than the entire state of Oregon, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention statistics Alexander learned the importance of having the local university be a community leader against COVID-19.

The citizens of the state, when a catastrophe occurs, turn to LSU to solve their problems, he said.

Alexander transformed the Tigers basketball arena into a production facility for personal protective equipment. And LSUs school of veterinary medicine was the first in the Baton Rouge area to open for community COVID-19 testing, he said.

He compared this to how OSU-Cascades led contact tracing in Bend earlier this summer.

As for Beaver football and other OSU fall collegiate sports, Alexander said his teams have had low numbers of positive COVID-19 tests and athletes have stayed socially distant while working out.

But the prevalence of COVID-19 in other PAC-12 Conference university cities, like Los Angeles and Phoenix, might derail fall sports, he said.

Arizona and Arizona State may not want their students playing ... nor will we be that comfortable sending our students into that environment if cases are still climbing, Alexander said.

The university will likely make a decision on fall sports in the next two to three weeks, he said.

Having overseen LSU branches in smaller Louisiana cities like Alexandria and Eunice, Alexander understands the importance of OSU-Cascades to nearby rural Central and Eastern Oregon towns, he said.

Theyre economic engines for the communities, but theyre also there to provide academic access and opportunity to students that either would not have had it or never had it, Alexander said of rural branch campuses. I know how important OSU-Cascades is to keeping many of the people in the region.

Despite the challenges of leading a university during a pandemic, Alexander expressed enthusiasm for taking the reins of OSU and OSU-Cascades. And hell push for continued campus expansion in Bend, despite the rough economic climate, he said.

We are completely behind this project at Cascades in Bend, and well stay behind it, Alexander said. We just hope our state Legislature understands the importance of serving the population that were serving at OSU-Cascades.

More than meets the eye – Science Codex

July 12th, 2020 12:46 am

The ability to recognize faces is a complex neurocognitive skill with important social implications. The disorder, which, according to some estimates, affects more than 2 percent of the population, can lead to isolation and anxiety and impair personal and work relationships.

The traditional view of face blindness--prosopagnosia in scientific parlance--has held that the disorder arises from deficits in visual perception. Under that view, individuals with face blindness are unable to visually distinguish the features of faces presented side by side and unable to determine whether the faces are the same or not.

Now a new study led by researchers at Harvard Medical School and the VA Boston Healthcare System shows that face blindness may arise from deficits beyond visual perception and appears to involve glitches in retrieving various contextual cues from memory.

The results, published July 5 ahead of print in the journal Cortex, suggest that the traditional view of face blindness as a purely visual perceptual disorder may be reductive, the researchers said. Further, they reveal that successful facial recognition requires recollection, or the recall of relevant contextual details about a person, such as their name or profession.

The new findings can help explain a mystifying discrepancy in face blindness research: People with the condition often fail to visually identify familiar faces, but many also perform normally on visual-perception tests.

"This inconsistency has always hinted that there may be other factors at play that go beyond visual perception," said study senior author Joseph DeGutis, HMS assistant professor of psychiatry at VA Boston. "Our findings suggest that one important deficit beyond perception is face recollection."

The ability to recognize a face requires two forms of memory: Recollection and familiarity. Recollection is the retrieval of contextual information upon seeing a face--a fellow shopper greeting you in the store and you recognizing them as the person you met through work a few weeks back. Familiarity, on the other hand, is a fuzzier "feeling of knowing" without any contextual information, the researchers explained. Think of the fellow shopper looking vaguely familiar but without any of the relevant details that tell you how you know them.

The findings can help inform the design of techniques to boost face recognition in people with developmental prosopagnosia--a form of face blindness that is not caused by brain injury, poor vision or neurodevelopmental disorders like autism.

"Our results underscore that prosopagnosia is a far more complex disorder that is driven by more than deficits in visual perception," said study first author Anna Stumps, a researcher in the Boston Attention Learning Laboratory at VA Boston. "This finding can help inform the design of new training approaches for people with face blindness."

The research team is currently working to design one such experimental program in the VA Boston laboratory where the work was conducted.

The study involved 6o people, ages 18 to 65, half of whom had lifelong face blindness.

The participants were asked to perform a series of facial-recognition tasks by studying and then identifying sets of faces that the participants had not seen prior to the study.

Participants were asked to study 60 faces shown on a computer screen, one at a time. The participants were then shown a scramble of 120 faces--some of them already seen during the study session and some completely new.

To tease out the differences in recognition memory between participants with and without face blindness, DeGutis and colleagues measured their degree of confidence in classifying each face as "old" or "new" on a scale of 1 to 6. Correctly identifying a face as old with high confidence reflects the use of recollection, the researchers said, whereas correctly identifying a face as old with less confidence reflects the use of familiarity.

Compared with participants who had face blindness, people without it were significantly more confident that they had seen these faces before. However, those with face blindness were still able to correctly identify many of the faces they had seen before, although with less confidence. In other words, when trying to recognize a face, participants with face blindness relied on familiarity, the vague sense of knowing or having seen someone before without specific contextual information. In contrast, individuals without face blindness relied on recollection.

Taken together, these findings suggest that people with face blindness use different memory processes for face recognition.

The results, the researchers said, demonstrate that successful face recognition requires more than a vague familiarity with a face--a sense of having seen a face before but without recalling any other details to "place" the face. Memory researchers call this inability to identify a familiar face out of context "butcher-on-the-bus" phenomenon. Though everyone experiences this from time to time, for people with true face blindness this can happen frequently, as often as multiple times a day.

"Our findings suggest that people with developmental prosopagnosia use a different memory system when trying to learn and remember faces and that system is less optimally suited for the task of recognizing faces," DeGutis said.

Bechtel: What the sculptor saw – Roanoke Times

July 12th, 2020 12:46 am

In closing, I wish to make three observations: first, the egregious actions of just a single officer greatly complicate the work of the many officers still conscientiously performing their duties. Trust, once broken, is hard to restore. Yet trust between officers and citizens, and between police departments and their communities, is essential. Second, I worry that police departments will have trouble attracting, hiring, and retaining good people, especially African Americans, when a diverse police force is critical. And third, it seems to me that police are too often charged with treating the symptoms, as it were, of conditions which our society has failed to effectively address. We are to blame, at least as much as the police.

It was a privilege to meet and observe police officers from Roanoke, Virginia Tech, and surrounding counties. I trust we will afford them the respect we expect them to show us. I hope police departments will be open to change and active in helping to facilitate that change. Crisis can be opportunity, if we are able to be patient with each other, act constructively, and look to the future.

Let’s Bust These 7 Myths About Blindness – Yahoo Lifestyle

July 11th, 2020 11:49 pm

A blind cane user feels her way along the sidwalk while carrying a brightly colored umbrella in the rain.

Amidst the current resurgence of the Black Lives Matter movement and the celebration of LGBTQ pride, I have come across admirable efforts to educate. I have appreciated the Black and LGBTQIA creators of literature, podcasts, music, and memoirs for helping me better understand diverse lived experiences of oppression. I write this not to dilute or distract from the potency of racism in the United States or from the celebration of LGBTQIA rights, but instead because I wish to share in efforts to elucidate realities about marginalized experiences.

Before my vision deteriorated, I admittedly had no concept of blindness. My lived experience and connection to members of the blind community have given me a more nuanced perspective, and I hope to share this information to help answer questions or clarify misconceptions about blindness.

1. Myth: Blind people see all black.

Fact: Blindness is a spectrum, and many blind people have some functional vision. On one end of the blindness spectrum is seeing absolutely nothing. Though I havent had this experience, I have heard that for most, the experience is not seeing all black, but instead is an absence of sight. Have you eaten something with your nose clogged and not kind of clogged, but completely, totally clogged? If so, you have likely experienced being unable to taste. You could not describe the flavor because there is an absence of information. That lack of input is what blindness is like. There simply is no visual information.

Related: Download The Mighty app to connect in real time with people who can relate to what you're going through.

On the other end of the blindness spectrum is the threshold of legal blindness. Visual acuity worse than 20/200 with correction (glasses or contact lenses) constitutes legal blindness. This means that even with correction, the legally blind person sees from 20 feet away what a typically-sighted person can see from 200 feet. Although everyones visual experience is a little different, for me, when I saw 20/200, I could recognize people around 15 feet away and read print using enlarged text (e.g. 24 point font). Complete lack of sight is rare; most blind people perceive some light and shapes.

Story continues

2. Myth: Blindness is stable.

Fact: Many forms of blindness lead to differences from day to day and over the course of weeks and years.Blindness varies between people and within people over time. I experience fluctuations I affectionally referred to as bad vision days. My cause of vision loss is degenerative, which means it continues to change over time. Even within a day, my degree of functional vision changes dramatically.

Related: Vision Portraits Documentary Chronicles Lives of Artists With Low Vision

I hear this facet of blindness is hard for sighted people to understand sometimes. I like to describe it as more intense experiences of typical visual fluctuations. For example, most sighted people will have a difficult time seeing upon walking into a dark room after being outside in the sun. Most sighted people will experience eyestrain after using a laptop for long hours. For me, these visual changes are far more exaggerated and longer-lasting and generalizes to other visual experiences like glare.

3. Myth: Blind people like to feel faces.

Fact: I have never met or heard of a blind person wanting to feel others faces. That is all.

4. Myth: When someone loses sight, their other senses get stronger.

Fact: When someone loses sight, they may learn ways to rely on other senses more, and reliance on other senses can lead to changes in the brain. My senses of hearing, taste, smell and touch work the same way they did before I lost my sight. I have, however, learned to use other senses in lieu of vision. To illustrate, I use my sense of touch to determine whether a surface is clean. Using my sense of touch instead of vision does not inherently mean my sense of touch is stronger. Over time though, I have spent years relying on non-visual senses and I have now trained myself to use these senses. For instance, I have learned to listen to books and podcasts at increasing speeds, often four to five times the average listening speed. Though I have no way of confirming, I imagine this has changed my brains wiring.

Related: To My Fellow Moms With an Invisible Disability

5. Myth: You can tell if someone is blind.

Fact: You usually cannot tell someone is blind.Though some people use assistive tools like white canes and guide dogs, many blind people do not.A Google search indicates that only 2-8 percent of blind people use white canes and 5 percent use guide dogs. The vast majority of blind people, like myself, often navigate without a visible form of mobility assistance. It is also a myth that you can tell someone is blind by looking at their eyes. While some blind people have forms of vision loss that influence their eye movements and focus, many blind people can and will direct their gaze to where they are focusing even with very low functional vision. I have been told I appear to make eye contact most of the time, despite the reality that when I look at someone they disappear into my blindspot.

6. Myth: Blind people wear dark sunglasses all the time.

Fact: Some blind people wear sunglasses or tinted lenses, some do not, and others use varies.Because there are diverse causes of vision loss and diverse experiences of vision, some people benefit from tinted lenses. Personally, I have learned that blue light blocking glasses are really helpful for reducing eye strain. I also wear dark sunglasses outdoors and benefit from green-tinted lenses when it is cloudy. I am especially sensitive to glare and will wear sunglasses inside if the sun is shining in, otherwise I usually only wear blue light blocking lenses indoors. Lenses come in diverse shades amber, green, yellow and it can be helpful to work with a low vision specialist to try out the various options.

7. Myth: Blind people dont care about appearance.

Fact: Many blind people care about appearances; there are diverse preferences just as there are with sighted people. Blind people can and do care to create an aesthetic in their style and in their physical spaces. How? Many blind people have had some sight and may have visual preferences. Many also rely on sighted people for assistance. My friends and family know my preferences, often better than I do, and help me identify items that express who I am. Again, blind people come in all varieties some like doing their make-up, some like decorating their homes, some take immense pleasure in fashion.

A key thread across many of these myths pervades across culture and identity: there is diversity in lived experiences, preferences, and expressions. Some blind people are obsessed with interior design. Some blind people use a cane. Some blind people wear tinted glasses. Not all blind people cannot see anything. And frankly, no blind people go around touching peoples faces. A step towards mitigating bias and discrimination is creating empathy through understanding.

Jamal Crawford reveals the secret to his longevity – ClutchPoints

New Brooklyn Nets shooting guard Jamal Crawford is the oldest player in the NBA at the moment. Hes three months older than Miami Heat icon Udonis Haslem, who held the title of the oldest player in the league before Brooklyn signed Crawford this week.

During an interview with Marc Berman of the New York Post, the new Nets signee spoke about how hes been able to keep his body in tip-top condition for so many years.

My wife changed my diet a few years ago, and that was huge, Jamal Crawford said in explaining his longevity.

And Im just staying in love with the game. I didnt turn 40. I turned 20 twice. I have no idea what my role will be, but whatever it is, I will try to do it to the best of my ability. Im just thankful to the Nets for the opportunity.

The Nets signed Crawford and Michael Beasley since they desperately needed bodies for the bubble games. Brooklyn will be without Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving, DeAndre Jordan, Spencer Dinwiddie, Wilson Chandler, and Tauren Prince down in Orlando, Florida, so it made all the sense in the world for general manager Sean Marks to add Crawford and Beasley.

Crawford played with the Phoenix Suns during the 2018-19 season. He averaged 7.9 points, 1.3 rebounds, and 3.6 assists in 64 regular-season games while shooting 39.7 percent from the field, 33.2 percent from beyond the arc, and 84.5 percent from the free-throw line.

Nothing is set in stone, but theres a chance the Nets could bring Crawford back for the 2020-21 season since the three-time Sixth Man of the Year has a strong relationship with both Durant and Irving.

Spanish National Center for Biotechnology uses Atos supercomputing expertise to find out how Covid-19 virus initiates infection – GlobeNewswire

July 11th, 2020 10:48 pm

Paris, July 9, 2020 Atos, a global leader in digital transformation, announce that the Biocomputing Unit at the Spanish National Center for Biotechnology (CNB), part of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), is using Atos supercomputing resource to produce a refined 3D model of the SARS-Cov2 spike protein. By knowing more detail about the structure of this protein, which is the one that the virus uses to enter human cells, researchers can better understand how the virus initiates infection. This important step forward may help in the development of a vaccine.

The model, created at the Biocomputing Unit of CNB-CSIC using 3D cryoelectron microscopy, a complicated structural technique, will enable researchers and scientists to visualize not only the spike glycoprotein but also other SARS-Cov2 proteins. It has been made available to all scientific researchers across the world working on the virus.

Professor JM Carazo of CNB, said: Were really proud that we have been able to make this important step forward in the structural understanding of the viral glycoprotein, which is due in part to the acceleration provided by our powerful supercomputers. Now the scientific community worldwide can access a mass of structural knowledge around SARS-Cov-2, so we can work together to help make this invisible enemy visible.

Dr Natalia Jimenez, Atos HPC, AI and Quantum Life Sciences Center of Excellence Director added: Were honored to be able to provide these researchers the exceptional computing power needed to help them get results faster. By combining research expertise with our technological expertise and experience, were able to develop valuable resources that will help support the global fight against the virus.

The HPC resource includes Atos BullSequana X supercomputer, based at the CNB-CSIC in Madrid, plus additional compute capabilities and access to Atos experts at Atos new global HPC, AI & Quantum Life Sciences Center of Excellence. CNB-CSIC is one of the first research institutes to use this new center, which provides researchers with access to leading-edge technologies, such as Quantum, High Performance Computing and AI, supported by Atos products, services and expertise in these sectors to help boost Life Sciences discovery and innovation.
