NCCN Patient Advocacy Summit Emphasizes Treating Every Cancer Patient as an Individual – Newswise

December 11th, 2020 2:52 pm

Newswise PLYMOUTH MEETING, PA [December 10, 2020] Today, the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) hosted an annual patient advocacy summit featuring Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) and Congressman Buddy Carter (R-GA), which was streamed online. Every year, the NCCN Policy department invites people from across the oncology ecosystem to share their perspectives on improving the quality and efficiency of cancer care so that patients can live better lives. This years virtual summit focused on putting the personal into personalized care while exploring how the needs of people with cancer can vary across the lifespan.

We work with patient advocacy organizations year-round to ensure our policy team is advocating for policies that address the most pressing issues for people with cancer and their caregivers, said Alyssa Schatz, MSW, Senior Director of Policy and Advocacy for NCCN and a participant in the roundtable discussion titled Identifying Policy and Practice Solutions for Patients Across the Lifespan. This summit gives us a chance to learn from one another and speak collectively to our audience of providers, payers, and policymakers. A key takeaway from todays conversation is the reminder to treat the personnot the demographicwhile also recognizing that people in some demographics may face additional obstacles to quality cancer care.

Cancer survivors are more than their age, gender, or disease, explained keynote speaker Jan S. White, Cancer Survivor and Patient Advocate. Assumptions around age and gender often figure into care teams expectations for survivorship, but if you have not asked your patients about their goals for how they want to live following treatment, you are missing an important step. Their answers will surprise you.

The idea of recognizing everyones unique set of circumstances was echoed by Danielle Pardue, a panelist who spoke on behalf of caregivers: The best way to support a caregiver is to take the time to understand the individual needs and strengths of each caregiver and patient. No plan of care for any patient can be completely successful without the support of one or more caregivers, especially at home. Providers need to take both the patients preferences and the caregivers abilities into account when determining their treatment recommendations.

Pardue also pointed out: Every problem does not necessarily have a solution; caregivers should be encouraged to share what they need so that solutions can be sought, but shouldnt be discouraged from sharing when solutions are hard to come by. Sharing experiences is in itself a therapeutic experience for overwhelmed caregivers. There is great power and healing in venting because we understand the world through the stories of others.

Speakers also looked at how members of various racial, ethnic, or socioeconomic groups can face some common or recurring barriers to care that must be addressed.

We cannot separate social, racial, and economic inequality from the adult cancer journey, said Darcie Green, Executive Director of Latinas Contra Cancer. The clients we serve face predictable and preventable systemic barriers to cancer care. Navigating cancer can be challenging enough without also having to worry about how you will feed your family, pay rent, absorb income loss, or overcome the obstacles that exist within the healthcare system. The COVID-19 pandemic has only deepened health injustice and the trauma of poverty in this country. This impact is reflected in the experience of cancer patients in the population we serve.

Many of the speakers focused particularly on how a persons age at the time of diagnosis can result in different options or approaches for treatment, for instance older patients, who are more-likely to have additional, unrelated health concerns, or may face implicit bias based on their age.

As we refine our understanding of tumor biology and tailor therapy to the molecular subtype of each tumor, we must remember factors outside of the actual treatment that significantly affect outcomes, observed Efrat Dotan, MD, Fox Chase Cancer Center, Chair of the NCCN Guidelines Panel for Older Adult Oncology. Especially when treating older adults with cancer, evaluating all the domains that affect their careand addressing any deficiencieswill result in truly personalized medicine and improved outcomes.

Cancer is a disease of aging, yet older patients have not shared in the benefits of many modern cancer treatments, and remain woefully underrepresented in clinical trials, said Hyman Muss, MD, FASCO, University of North Carolina Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center. It is the obligation of all of us to fix this in order to guarantee that our older cancer patients get the care they need.

We know how important it is to make sure clinical trials enroll a broad representation of patients across age, race, and ethnicity, agreed Maura Dickler, MD, Lilly Oncology. At Lilly, we are committed to reducing the barriers that limit diversity in clinical trial enrollment, including working to ensure our trial sites are closer to patients, utilizing new forms of telehealth when appropriate, and broadening eligibility criteria so we are not excluding patients who have additional health conditions.

There are also unique concerns for cancer survivors who were first diagnosed during childhood or adolescence. Panelists discussed the confusion that can arise over what happens once patients complete active treatment. Thats where survivorship care plans and clinical practice guidelines on preventing or managing recurrence and side effects can play an important role.

Effective transition of care in cancer survivors from oncologists to primary care physicians can make a significant difference in early detection of late effects. You can't find something that you are not looking for, saidAarati Didwania, MD, MSCI, Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University.

Speakers at the summit also touched on current events impacting cancer care including the upcoming Supreme Court ruling on the Affordable Care Act and the long- and short-term impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on cancer care. The virtual discussions were moderated by Clifford Goodman, PhD, The Lewin Group, and also included Phylicia L. Woods, JD, MSW, from the Cancer Support Community.

Representatives from the Cancer Hope Network, Patient Empowerment Network, and Fight Colorectal Cancer presented information about age-specific resources intended to increase access to recommended screening, improve health literacy, and provide peer-to-peer counseling services. Dottie Shead, MS, from NCCNs patient information department discussed existing NCCN Guidelines for Patients across cancer types and supportive care topics, including symptom management and age-related care for adolescents and young adults. Shead also previewed the soon-to-publish patient and caregiver guidelines focused specifically on survivorship, including guidance on post-treatment wellness recommendations, and monitoring and treating the late and long-term effects that can arise from cancer care.

December 10th, 2020 4:59 am

by Crista Leigh Farrell on December 4, 2020 4:24 pm

JOSEPH DESIMONE, the Sanjiv Sam Gambhir Professor in Translational Medicine and professor of chemical engineering, has been named the recipient of the 2019-20 Harvey Prize in science and technology in recognition of contributions in materials science, chemistry, polymer science and technology, nanomedicine, and 3D printing.

Joseph DeSimone

The Harvey Prize, the highest honor of the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, recognizes breakthroughs in research that benefit humanity. The prize administrators said DeSimones work is a model for combining basic scientific discoveries with developments of industrial technologies that have a significant influence.

It is incredibly humbling to be selected for the Harvey Prize, said DeSimone. I have been fortunate in my career to work with brilliant students and colleagues to make advances in science and technology toward improving the human condition, and this is a tremendous honor and testament to our work together.

DeSimone, who joined the Stanford faculty in September, holds faculty appointments in the Department of Radiology, the Department of Chemical Engineering and, by courtesy, the Graduate School of Business. He previously held a joint appointment in chemistry and chemical engineering at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and North Carolina State University.

An author of more than 350 scientific articles and an inventor on more than 200 issued patents, DeSimone is known for advances rooted in polymer science that have spawned new technologies and areas of research, as well as for translating discoveries made in his laboratory to the marketplace.

In the 1990s, he and students invented an environmentally friendly process for synthesizing high-performance plastics without the use of hazardous solvents. In 2004, DeSimone and his team invented a breakthrough nanoparticle fabrication process, leading to the launch of multiple medical products in clinical trials. In 2015, he and colleagues reported a breakthrough advance in polymer 3D printing, which led DeSimone to co-found Carbon, a company whose technology has enabled cutting-edge products in such industries as footwear, dental, medical, automotive and aerospace.

DeSimone is one of only 25 people elected to all three branches of the U.S. national academies (Sciences, Engineering and Medicine). In 2016, President Obama presented him with the National Medal of Technology and Innovation.

6 Longevity-Promoting Herbs and Spices To Add to Your Cooking Rotation – Well+Good

December 10th, 2020 4:56 am

The term longevity refers to the number of years you live, and it does have a limit. Our bodies are not designed to live to 120 years, although many of us would like to live that long if we had quality of life for that long, says Gary W. Small, MD, the physician in chief for behavioral health at Hackensack Meridian Health in New Jersey and the former director of the UCLA Longevity Center.

In reality, the normal (and inevitable) processes of oxidative stress and inflammation are thought to contribute to our gradual decline in health as we get older. That doesnt mean were helpless when it comes to our health. In fact, the foods we eat every day play a major role in healthy aging and longevityand a few herbs and spices may be especially helpful.

Inflammation is a natural part of the immune response to fight infection and repair damage from injuries. Excess inflammationis associated with chronic diseases including cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, kidney disease, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. We know that heightened inflammation and oxidative stress contribute to age-related diseases, says Dr. Small. If you look at a lot of studies and blood markers of inflammation, we find that age itself is often associated with heightened inflammation. Lifestyle habits, including poor diet, lack of exercise, stress, and a shortage of quality sleep play an important role in accelerating inflammation, he adds.

Thats where plant-based foods can come in. Plants naturally have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which Dr. Small says may play some role in healthy aging and longevity. This may slow down the process of aging as well as support the immune system and protect against chronic conditions that are more common with age, explains Rachelle Robinette, a clinical herbalist and holistic health practitioner (and host of Well+Goods YouTube show, Plant Based). While we dont know for sure exactly how many antioxidants we need to consume for these effects, studies show that people who consume these kinds of foods live longer and better, says Dr. Small.

That doesnt prove that consuming any one particular food or supplement will have enough of an effect on your inflammation levels to actually have an impact on disease, Dr. Small adds. Were always looking for a quick fix or magic bulletEveryone wants a remedy, but none can even work well if diet and lifestyle are not in place, adds Robinette. In terms of longevity, diet and lifestyle are going to matter more than any herb or supplement. Herbs work wonderfully as medicine, but they really are supplemental.

Caveats aside, some foods really do boast more concentrated levels of disease- and age-fighting compounds than othersand that certainly cant hurt in moderation when you integrate them into your cooking routine. Whats great about spices is it makes your diet more palatable, you want a diet thats nutritious but delicious, says Dr. Small. (Just remember: You should always talk to your doctor before starting any new supplement; some can be toxic at higher doses, especially if youre taking certain prescription medications.)

Ginger is the epitome of food medicine, as Robinette calls it. The compound gingerol in ginger is the source of most of the plants many benefits; it has powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects and may have anti-cancer properties. (Which, hello longevity!) The Mayo Clinic is currently investigating whether eating 2,000 mg of ginger a day for six weeks can boost the microbiome, aka the collection of bacteria, fungi, and viruses that make up a large part of the human body. That would be a big deal, Robinette explains, since your microbiome affects your overall health, including your brain, mood, and immune system.

Robinette recommends having ginger a few times a week as a fresh extract, grated into food, added to stir-fries, or sliced in a hot cup of tea. You can also try Robinettes recipe for ginger shotswhich may be especially helpful during cold and flu season. I do several shots per day in winter, she says.

Heres the step-by-step for making Robeinettes ginger shot to reap the benefits of the plant:

You cant talk about herbs for longevity without talking about turmeric. Another powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory spice, turmeric is where curry gets its flavorand the antioxidant compound curcumin. In 2018, Dr. Small authored a small double-blind studyshowing that taking two 90 mg curcumin supplements daily for 18 months improved memory and attention in older adults with mild memory problems. We did find it has a significant effectcompared to placebo, says Dr. Small, who is currently expanding the research to a much larger sample size across the U.S. While hes not sure exactly how curcumin works to boost brain health, my best guess is its the reduction in inflammation, he says.

Robinette points out that turmeric has been called a natural immunomodulator, or a substance that helps keep the immune system in check by boosting immunity when you need it and tamping it down to prevent excess inflammation involved in many chronic conditions. Some research suggests that turmeric could potentially even play a role in preventing and treating cancer, cardiovascular disease, metabolic conditions, neurological disease, and skin diseases.

Although it certainly doesnt hurt to enjoy more foods with turmeric, youll need to pop a curcumin supplement to get the full health benefits of the spice. For therapeutic purposes, you want to take higher doses, says Robinette. Try to take the supplement when you eat your meals, preferably with fat (like fatty fish or nuts) to increase the bioavailability of curcumin. (Just check with your doctor before you start supplementing to ensure it doesnt interact with any health conditions you have or medications you take.)

Heres even more intel on all the benefits of turmeric:

Spirulina is a type of cyanobacteria (or algae) thats grown in water and sold as tablets or in powder form. It contains a high amount of protein for a plant. And with loads of vitamins, including iron, potassium, zinc, calcium, and B vitamins, its almost identical, nutritionally, to mothers milk, Robinette adds.

Given that following a plant-forward diet is key to healthy aging, Robinette says supplementing with spirulina can be beneficial for healthy aging. Nobody eats enough plants. Supplementing with something thats really concentrated like spirulina is acheat way to get more greens. Just be sure to check your spirulina comes from a clean water source. Aim for a teaspoon per day, says Robinette; since spirulina has a seaweed-esque flavor, she suggests tossing it into pesto or any savory recipe with greens, like salad dressings, soups, or dips.

Jalapenos, cayenne, and other types of peppers contain capsaicin, a chemical compound that makes food spicy and has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Dr. Small points to a 2015 observational study of nearly half a million people in China, which concluded that people who ate more spicy foods were less likely to die of all causesand specifically of cancer, heart disease, and respiratory diseasesthan people who didnt or rarely ate these foods. The authors concluded the effect may be due to capsaicin.

How often should you hit the hot sauce? The Chinese researchers found that the benefits of capsaicin were cumulative; people who ate spicy foods six or seven times per week were least likely to die of any cause. But eating spicy meals even a couple of times a week seemed to have some benefit.

There are only a couple dozen plant adaptogens, including ginseng, that help increase the bodys resilience to stressors of all kinds. While you might associate ginseng with Traditional Chinese Medicine, its one of the oldest medicinal herbs used all over the world to support human health, Robinette says.

Robinson explains that adaptogens like ginseng micro-trigger the body, so it gets stronger over time to physical, emotional, and environmental stressors (like light and sounds). Its not impervious to stress, but youre better able to recover and not overreact, she says. Its helping move you between the sympathetic and parasympathetic states with more ease. Many of us are dealing with some level of stress these days, which can, over time, suppress the immune system and even shorten your lifespan by contributing to inflammation in the gut and disrupting sleep. Chronic stress is counterproductive for longevity in many ways, says Robinette.

Like most herbs, ginseng has antioxidant anti-inflammatory properties, says Robinette. A wealth of research suggests ginseng may have immunomodulatory and anti-cancer properties, and that it may even help control blood sugar in people with diabetes and improve learning and memory. Unlike most of the other herbs and spices on this list, you really need to take ginseng every day for an extended period of time to see benefits, says Robinette. You can enjoy it in any form, including tea, powder, capsule, and tincturejust be sure to talk to your doctor first, as ginseng can interact with some drugs (like warfarin and insulin).

The powerful phytochemicals, or plant antioxidants, in blueberries helps clean up free radicals, fighting the effects of inflammation that can in turn impact your health and longetivity. There are studies showing antioxidant foods like blueberries or pomegranatesshow moderate effects [on oxidative stress], though not as consistent or as big of an effect as we saw with curcumin, says Dr. Small. While were waiting to support this science, it certainly makes sense to try to consume colorful fresh fruits and veggies.

Wild blueberries, in particular, tend to be highest in gut-boosting fiber and antioxidants, says Robinette: They have more skin than grocery store blueberries (which are still good for you but bred to be sweet). Eat them fresh, sprinkle blueberry powder into your smoothies and cereal, or spread blueberry (or any other superfruit) paste onto toast like thick jam.

How the Japanese Lead the World in Longevity Without Going to the Gym – InsideHook

December 10th, 2020 4:56 am

Japan has the most centenarians per capita in the world. A 2016 study conducted by the World Economic Forum found that the nation had 61,000 citizens aged 100 or older, comprising 0.048% of the population. This phenomenon is often connected with the Japanese diet, which emphasizes fish, plant-based foods, minimal sugar intake and portion control. Traditional Japanese cuisine, known as washoku, prioritizes small plates and local ingredients.

That diet is a big reason the Japanese have some of the smallest waistlines in the world. Only 4.3% of the populace is obese, which is an absurd figure for a wealthy developed nation. For instance, Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom are all above 27%. The United States is at 36.2%.

But another reason, which was recently outlined in an essay by Japanese writer Kaki Okumura, is a national devotion to walking. Akin to biking in Northern Europe, the Japanese walk everywhere. They walk to work, to the grocery store, to dinner. If they need to get somewhere far away, they access a reliable (and lightning quick) public transportation system. Car ownership stands at just 69% nationwide. Contrast that with 93% in the United States.

Japanese officials have encouraged this way of life, creating miles of walking routes for its citizenry in specific prefectures. The average Japanese person now takes 6,500 steps a day. Fascinatingly, though, in a recent survey by Rakuten Insight, over half of Japanese responders (aged 20 to 60s) claimed that they barely exercised.

The key in all this, Okumura argues, is that the Japanese dont view walking as exercise. They accrue thousands of steps each day which we know is dynamite for both physical and mental health without thinking about it. For many of them, then, longevity comes without the expense of a gym membership, or home gym equipment, or fancy activewear.

And it comes without the expectations all those things bring. All the guilt, all the shame. Fitness culture in the States is highly motivating for certain people, but for others it can be intimidating, isolating, cultish. If you often find yourself in the latter camp, consider adopting Japanese methods. At a time when we could all see a bit more of the outside world, and finding time for fitness seems nigh impossible, just keep it simple. Go for a walk.

Phillip Danault dilemma, longevity of Shea Weber and more – The Athletic

December 10th, 2020 4:56 am

We should be getting excited for the most intriguing training camp the Canadiens have had in quite some time right about now. Questions abound surrounding how exactly coach Claude Julien will align his new and improved club, who will get which jobs on the power play, stuff like that.

Instead, we wait.

We wait for the NHL and NHLPA to hammer out an agreement so we can have a season. We wait for public health authorities in Quebec to authorize the Canadiens to open their practice facility for their players, which still hasnt happened as of Monday afternoon, with no apparent timeline as to when it might happen. We wait for players to start making their way to Montreal to prepare, which wont happen for most of them until the government gives that authorization to open Brossard because most of them are able to get on the ice where they currently are (or, in the case of Phillip Danault and some other Quebec-based players, have found a clandestine way to skate...

How Healthcare Professionals Can Improve The Patient Experience – Longevity LIVE

December 10th, 2020 4:56 am

Healthcare is long overdue for an upgrade. Shifting mindsets surrounding health, wellness, and longevity have made many old practices seem archaic. As older doctors reach retirement age and newer professionals enter the healthcare industry, improving the patient experience is quickly becoming a priority.

Prioritizing the patient experience is beneficial to both healthcare practitioners and patients. By advocating for our needs and demanding high-quality care, patients can tip the scales toward a healthcare system that values holistic care and longevity over symptom treatment.

Here are just a few ways healthcare professionals can improve the patient experience.

One of the biggest opportunities for improvement is for medical practitioners to showcase that they value their patients time. The days of accepting long wait times as a necessity for getting medical attention have come and gone. Patients who have the option to leave a practice and pursue an alternative with shorter wait times wont hesitate to do so.

Unfortunately, not all patients will be in a position to find another practice. Those with certain preferences or rigid insurance terms are often forced to stick it out. Healthcare practitioners who truly care for their patients have a duty to streamline their scheduling as much as possible.

By implementing a streamlined scheduling system, healthcare professionals can offer realistic booking timeframes and stay on schedule during busy periods. Offering an online scheduling portal allows patients to choose the time that works for them and enter triage information to determine how long the appointment will take.

Consider that the waiting room isnt the only place where patients can bide their time. Waiting on hold to book an appointment, waiting for test results, waiting to book a follow-up appointment, waiting for a prescription it all adds up. Given that they are waiting for help regarding their health and wellness, the stress can add up.

Implementing a smart scheduling system that lets patients access their records, submit a prescription request, and book an appointment without sitting on hold, allows medical practitioners to retain their patients for longer.

While it goes hand-in-hand with an online booking system, its worth mentioning the immeasurable value of implementing an automated appointment confirmation system. Use this system to send texts, emails, or automated phone calls to remind patients of upcoming appointments.

Implementing this feature has numerous benefits for busy patients and clinics. It reminds patients when theyve booked an appointment, helping them avoid any monetary penalties or delayed treatment from missing their appointments. On the other side of things, the practice will be able to allocate human resources more efficiently, deal with more pressing issues, and streamline scheduling.

One of the biggest hurdles to the overall patient experience is the ineffectiveness of a practices internal systems. By implementing the best EHR system possible, practices and healthcare centers will be able to offer more accurate information, shorter wait times, better communication, and a better patient experience.

Consider the fallibility of paper records in the modern era. Rather than waiting for your doctor to come into the room and flip through your chart, the information they need will be available with the click of a button. Rather than hoping specialist referrals are faxed on time and dont get lost in the shuffle, theres an instant notification of important information being transmitted.

Delays in healthcare can cost someone their life. When looking for a new medical practice, dont hesitate to ask about the systems they use to ensure timely communication and treatment. If your doctor is still using a fax machine, it may be time to look elsewhere.

Telemedicine is the wave of the future. Its a form of accessible healthcare thats becoming commonplace around the globe. While telemedicine was already burgeoning in the healthcare industry, the COVID-19 pandemic fast-tracked its popularity in many countries.

This service is another time-saving strategy that benefits both the practitioner and the patient. Rather than commuting to a doctors office and putting yourself at risk in a waiting room full of sick patients, a patient can often get what they need from the comfort of their home. This service is ideal for almost everyone, from people with children prone to ear infections to seniors with mobility challenges.

Telemedicine is the key to longevity in such uncertain times. Healthcare practitioners can use this offering to see more patients, without compromising their quality of work and attention.

Like any business, the way employees are treated will ultimately trickle down to the patients. Practitioners can improve their patient experience by offering care and consideration to the receptionists, assistants, and other frontline workers who act as the face of the business.

Offer training and leadership opportunities to help improve patient touchpoints with better listening, compassion, and by offering personalized care. Building a culture of mutual appreciation and support will resonate outside of the organization, creating a sense of welcome when a patient walks through the door.

Many modern general practitioners are learning where their skills and expertise fall short. For example, many general practitioners only learn the basics of nutrition science during their studies, leaving gaps in their knowledge when treating patients. Rather than trying to keep everything in-house, healthcare providers should strive to build a wellness referral network.

Networking and taking the time to cultivate relationships with wellness professionals that work adjacent to traditional healthcare is a powerful way to improve the patient experience. Experts in nutrition, massage therapy, sports physiotherapy, etc., are valuable additions to a more comprehensive wellness network. Being able to refer patients with the comfort that they will receive better care will show them that theyre valued.

When looking for a healthcare provider, dont hesitate to ask about their referral network and partnerships. Look for a healthcare professional who takes pride in offering you a complete wellness team.

While it may seem simple and obvious, the importance of active listening cannot be understated. Healthcare professionals need to practice this skill with patients, family members, coworkers, employees, and peers. A patient who does not feel heard will leave out important information that could be crucial to their care. As such, this simple effort can have a profound impact on someones health and longevity.

Patients who feel like their doctor is constantly rushing them out the door or failing to ask exploratory questions should seek help elsewhere.

The world is constantly moving systems to online platforms. A recent study showed that the average person spends 27% of their year online, and that was before the global pandemic forced everyone indoors.

The internet provides an opportunity for healthcare professionals to connect with their patients on a different level. By sharing informative and interesting content via social media, practitioners can build a rapport with their patients. Email marketing can be utilized to provide essential updates and proactive healthcare tips as well.

Most importantly, having an online presence shows patients that this medical practice has moved out of the dark ages and prioritizes modern communication.

Healthcare practices can dramatically improve the patient experience by making it easier to get in touch. This improvement goes hand-in-hand with centralized systems and online scheduling. If a patient has an important question or concern, they shouldnt need to wait on hold for hours.

While its equally important to maintain boundaries and adhere to privacy compliance regulations, practitioners should consider making themselves more accessible for general inquiries.

The waiting room doesnt have to be such a terrible place. Rather than turning on an old television with daytime talk shows and offering magazines from the 1990s, the waiting room should be a place of comfort.

Consider offering complimentary tea, fresh fruit, and wifi for patients to use while they wait. Replacing cheap overhead lights with warm, ambient lighting and soft background music can make the environment more pleasant and relaxing. Keeping the waiting room clean is important, but making it look like a sterile ward isnt.

Another way to improve the patient experience is to be transparent about pricing. Patients should know what to expect financially when they visit a healthcare provider. Having this information readily available, either posted online and in the waiting room or having staff navigate billing, is a must.

Pricing transparency goes deeper than what it costs to see a healthcare provider. Doctors should also practice integrity and value their patients health and wellness over sponsorships. If theres a generic drug that works just as well as a costly brand name, that is the one that should get recommended to a patient with limited means. In many cases, being able to afford the prescribed medication is the difference between life and death.

There are many patients who have supportive families to help them navigate their health issues. Healthcare practitioners can improve the patient experience by creating an environment that welcomes families and caregivers into the fold. Taking this approach allows for face-to-face meetings where questions can be asked and answered by everyone at the same time. Additionally, this strategy helps improve the quality of care and ensures needs are being properly communicated.

Practitioners should consider adding a family meeting room to their practice for this type of situation. Creating a more comfortable environment for tough conversations shows empathy and respect for everyone involved.

Finally, the best way to improve the patient experience is to ask for feedback. Posting a quick survey after a patient books an appointment online or uses a telemedicine service will provide valuable insights to improve the overall experience. This simple strategy can outline bottlenecks and service issues while highlighting opportunities for growth.

Some medical providers intentionally do not ask for patient feedback. This logic is based on the idea that patients dont understand the medical industrys inner workings. As such, they couldnt provide valuable information. However, you dont need a medical degree to know if an online portal is inefficient or if your time isnt valued.

While its true that the feedback provided by patients may not be relevant to the offering or whats in the practitioners control, theres still value in asking and considering the information.

Its important to note that in the modern era, feedback is often provided online, whether its asked for or not. Healthcare practitioners can improve the patient experience (and external perceptions) by responding to online reviews and critical feedback. By taking a proactive approach, practitioners can guide patients to a more appropriate forum for discussion.

A positive patient experience is about more than finding a positive in a potentially stressful situation, its about life. Patients can advocate for their care and speak up when they experience an issue, both online and with the practitioner. With enough demand, healthcare professionals will be forced to provide improved quality care to patients from all walks of life.

Centenarian reveals SURPRISE drink that helps her live longer

Much emphasis is put on the foods one consumes to help boost longevity with little thought on the power of how beverages can impact a persons health and longevity. With winter season upon us, now is the time to be consuming delicious drinks which not only warm the cockles of the heart but also are known to boost longevity.

Golden milk which is also known as turmeric milk is an Indian drink that has been gaining popularity in Western cultures.

This bright yellow beverage is traditionally made by warming up cows or plant-based milk with turmeric and other spices, such as cinnamon and ginger.

Its touted for its many health benefits including helping to boost longevity.

Turmeric milk is often used as an alternative remedy to boost immunity and stave off illness.

The key ingredient in golden milk is turmeric, a yellow spice popular in Asian cuisine, which gives curry its distinctive yellow colour.

Curcumin, the active component in turmeric, has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for centuries due to its strong antioxidant properties.

Antioxidants are compounds which fight cell damage, protecting the body from oxidative stress.

This is essential to the functioning of the cells, and studies regularly show that diets rich in antioxidants may help lower your risk of infections and disease to boost longevity.

Most golden milk recipes also include cinnamon and ginger both of which have even more added and impressive antioxidant properties.

A study published in the American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry provided evidence that curcumin can help protect ones brain.

In the study, participants were randomised into two groups and were studied for a period of 18 months.

One group took 90 milligrams of curcumin twice daily, while the other group took a placebo.

All volunteers underwent cognitive testes which were repeated every six months throughout the study and after.

The results found the group taking curcumin twice daily showed a 28 percent improvement in memory tests over the study period while those in the placebo group showing no memory improvement.

In a study published in the US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health, the effects of curcuminoids on myocardial infarction was investigated.

The study looked at people undergoing heart surgery who were given either four grams of curcumin or a placebo a few days before and after their surgery.

It was found those given curcumin were 65 percent less likely to experience a heart attack during their hospital stay than people in the placebo group.

Whats more, curcumin may improve the function of your blood vessel linings known as endothelial function. Proper endothelial function is important for a healthy heart.

Golden milk is easy to make at home using ingredients of half a cup (120ml) of an unsweetened milk of your choice, one tsp of turmeric, one small piece of grated fresh ginger or 1/2 tsp of ginger powder, half tsp of cinnamon powder, one pinch of ground black pepper, one tsp of honey or maple syrup (optional).

To make the golden milk, simply mix all ingredients in a small saucepan or pot and bring to a boil.

Reduce the heat and simmer for about 10 minutes or until fragrant and flavourful.

Strain the drink through a fine strainer into mugs and top with a pinch of cinnamon.

Golden milk can also be made in advance and stored in your refrigerator for up to five days.

How to live longer: Drinking mulled wine may promote longevity, research suggests – Express

December 10th, 2020 4:56 am

HDL cholesterol is a substance that counters LDL cholesterol, which can clog up your arteries.

What's more, the occasional glass of wine may reduce oxidative damage and the oxidation of the bad LDL cholesterol up to 50 percent.

Oxidation is a destruction mechanism that is a precursor to heart disease.

Furthermore, drinking one to three glasses of red wine per day, three to four days of the week, may reduce the risk of stroke in middle-aged men, evidence suggests.

Likewise, cinnamon brings myriad health benefits that are conducive to longevity.

It reduces levels of total cholesterol, bad LDL cholesterol and triglycerides, while good HDL cholesterol remains stable, studies show.

More recently, a big review study concluded that a cinnamon dose of just 120 mg per day can have these effects.

In this study, cinnamon also increased good HDL cholesterol levels.

Last but not least nutmeg.

Animal studies show that taking high-dose nutmeg supplements reduced heart disease risk factors, such as high cholesterol and high triglyceride levels.

A study in rats showed that treatment with high-dose nutmeg extract significantly reduced blood sugar levels and enhanced pancreatic function.

However, these health effects have only been tested in animals using high doses of nutmeg extract.

Human studies are needed to determine whether high-dose supplements of the spice are safe and effective in humans.

We will also expand our service offering related to product care in order to prolong the life of our products.

The products of tomorrow leave no trace Marimekkos own operations are already carbon neutral

We have launched several projects to significantly reduce emissions in our entire value chain it is our intention to align our emissions-related targets with those of the Paris Agreement. We commit ourselves to reduce the environmental footprint of our textile materials by 30 percent (measured in the Higg Material Sustainability Index) by 2025 through using more sustainable materials and to cut it further by 2030 by adopting new material solutions. We also aim at reducing emissions from logistics by 50 percent by 2025. As a result of continuous development work and emission offsetting, our own operations are already carbon neutral in 2020.

Positive change through fairness and equality aiming at full transparency of operations and the supply chain

Fairness and equality have always been important principles for Marimekko. We want to promote their implementation in our value chain and see to it that our entire value chain is built on these principles. We will continuously provide more information about the origin of our products, ultimately aiming at full transparency of our operations and supply chain, starting with raw materials. We will also extend audits to second-tier suppliers in risk countries. By actively collaborating with other players in the industry, we can promote sustainable practices and drive positive change across the whole sector.

As of midday on Dec. 9, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported 285,351 total deaths due to COVID-19 in the United States, more than the number of Americans killed in World War I, the Korean War and the Vietnam War combined.

The 1918 influenza pandemic remains the deadliest event in American history with now-estimated 675,000 deaths, followed by theCivil War with an estimated 620,000 deaths and World War II at more than 400,000 American deaths. But the still-growing coronavirus death toll continues to rise to new levels of tragedy.

Hospitals overrun across the country with COVID-19 surges | TheHill – The Hill

December 10th, 2020 4:56 am

The U.S. is seeing a dramatic increase in COVID-19 hospitalizations, intensifying the strain on health care systems across the country as the pandemic that has left nearly 290,000 Americans dead continues to worsen.

The number of people hospitalized with COVID-19 in the U.S. hit an all-time high this week, with more than 104,000 people currently hospitalized with the disease, according to The Covid Tracking Project. The number of hospitalizations has doubled since the start of November.

Our country is in a historic fight against the Coronavirus. Add Changing America to your Facebook or Twitter feed to stay on top of the news.

An average of more than 202,000 cases are being reported every day with 2,225 new deaths shattering previous records as the first sign of a post-Thanksgiving surge in cases is beginning to show up in data released by states across the country.

The New York Times reports more than one-third of people in the U.S. live in areas where hospitals are low on intensive care beds, while hospitals serving more than 100 million people reported having less than 15 percent of intensive care beds available as of last week.

The situation is even worse for parts of the Midwest, South and Southwest, where1 in 10 Americans lives in an area where fewer than 5 percent of ICU beds are open, the Times reports.

Several states have had to open field hospitals to handle the influx of new patients and many have imposed new strict restrictions in an effort to slow the spread of the virus. California recently went into another lockdown as the state has reported a roughly 70 percent increase in ICU admissions over the past two weeks.

But public health officials anticipate things to get worse before they get better as people will soon gather together for Christmas.

Anthony Fauci, the nations top infectious diseases expert, warned earlier this week that Christmas could be worse than Thanksgiving in spreading the virus as it tends to be a longer holiday that leads into New Years.

I think it can be even more of a challenge than what we saw with Thanksgiving, Fauci said during an interview on CNNs New Day Monday. So I hope that people realize that and understand that as difficult as this is, nobody wants to modify, if not, essentially shut down, their holiday season.

But were at a very critical time in this country right now, he added. Weve got to not walk away from the facts and the data. This is tough going for all of us.

Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Biotechnology And The Man Who Is Connecting It All: Felix Paul Joe – Outlook India

December 10th, 2020 4:55 am

Thats the philosophy of Felix Paul Joe and preferably the biggest explanation one can have for his unflinching crusade in the field of biotech research. Felix founded GeneX India Bioscience Pvt. Ltd. in 2004 but, the journey before it prepared him for everything that came next.

After earning a Masters in Life Science and Post Graduate Diploma in Business Administration from the University of Madras and Madras Productivity Council, Felix was all set to create his own path in biotechnology. But, revolution is a way paved stone by stone. Before realizing his passion and dream to become an entrepreneur, Felix completed a nine-year run in different biotech companies. As a National Sales & Product Manager, he embarked on a journey that shaped his understanding of what the industry is and what it needs.

He attended a plethora of application training on varied subjects like molecular biology, cellular microscopy, interphase chromosome profiling and Proteomics. His learnings from these teachings formed a crucial part of his ventures growth model in the later years. He also completed exclusive product training and lab sessions at many international labs and forums during his days as a manager. Working with many Centres for Excellence labs across India, Felix perceived the need for a bridge between the Indian and global standards.

In 2004, when Felix established GeneX India Bioscience, the company only started as a distributor of cell culture products. Molecular biology and biotechnology were then added to widen the spectrum. Today, the company focusses in the fields of bio-science research institutes, molecular diagnostic labs, biopharmaceutical R&D, biotech contract research and development centres.

Over the years, the organization created a line of products and solutions, namely Cell Biology, Real-Time PCR, Epigenetics, Next Generation Sequencing and Protein Biology. The private company is a full-fledged service provider for cell biology, flowcytometry and proteomics. As envisioned by Felix, GeneX also acts as a middleman nurturing quality products, scientific and technical support between biotech solution providers in Europe, USA, UK and Indian researchers who work across the relevant fields.

GeneX India has an experienced team of 33 scientifically-qualified professionals who possess the capability to market, conduct workshops, seminars. They cumulatively provide solutions to scientists and research scholars, helping them complete their research. The team works in constant collaboration mode to ensure a zero-defect product and service range. The stringent quality standard and client-centric approach have made the enterprise synonymous to the word biotech all across the world.

Following this unprecedented rise, GeneX India has been recognized for its efforts via major accolades like the Biotech Excellence and the APJ Abdul Kalam Excellence Award. The CEO magazine also noted GeneX as one of the 25 fastest growing biotechnology companies in India recently. Moreover, Felix himself has been the recipient of multiple national and international awards such as the Mahatma Gandhi Samman at the House of Commons, UK.

Even during the COVID pandemic, Felix and his company have been dedicated to aiding ICMR approved testing labs and kit manufacturers. Vaccine research labs and producers are being helped in complete sync too.

As the future entails, Felix is now set on scaling the firm to global benchmarks and giving Indian research the world stage it deserves. A plan to support the bioprocess and vaccine development has been put in place as well. He also aims to produce affordable molecular diagnostic kits using the latest technology like the CRISPR Cas9 Genome editing tool. A Contract Research Lab that acts as a high-end core facility with its primary focus on Genomics and DNA sequencing for molecular diagnostics is also in the works. The end goal is to provide services to biotech researchers and in turn, become a parallel economic solution provider for the high throughput, time-bound turnkey biotech projects and diagnostic labs.

A reputable part of the significant science congresses across the country, Felix has always had the vision to create a sustainable future for the world. He has a strong conviction that the firms business model should make a profound and positive impact on the lives of all the researchers it touches. His every step has been towards building his own pathway that treads towards this purpose.

Pennsylvania biotechnology company testing new drug that could change the way COVID-19 patients are treated – FOX43.com

December 10th, 2020 4:55 am

By the end of the month, Americans could begin receiving the COVID-19 vaccine. Yet, Pittsburgh-based biotechnology company, CytoAgents says, a vaccine is not the only solution in the fight against the virus.

"The ultimate solution will be a combination of vaccines, testing, and treatment," said Teresa Whalen, CytoAgents CEO.

CytoAgents began Phase 1 trials on a drug they believe will change the way, not only COVID-19 is treated, but also other illnesses.

"Our drug treats the underlying causes of illness," said Whalen.

The drug is called GP1691. It's an oral pill that helps a body in cytokine storm, which is an immune response where the body starts to attack its own cells instead of just fighting the virus. This is something scientists believe is happening in COVID-19 positive patients and explains why some have mild symptoms, but for others it's deadly.

"We look to prevent patients from progressing and going into the ICU," said Whalen. "To prevent them from requiring ventilation and to get them out of the hospital, or keep them at home giving them an orally available treatment."

CytoAgents says, because GP1681 addresses the body's immune response, it would be effective in treating other illnesses or if the COVID-19 virus mutates.

"We need treatment for viruses, that when they mutate, they still work," said Whalen. "For viruses, when we need time to develop a new vaccine, we have treatments that still work, and that's gp1681."

There's no price tag for GP1681 yet, but CytoAgents expects it to be a coule hundred dollars, which they say is cost effective compared to other COVID-19 treatments costing thousands.
