Every year, about 10,000 people in the U.S. need a stem cell transplant but cant find a donor.

The intense medical procedure, which can help those with leukemia, lymphoma, sickle cell anemia and other blood diseases, can save lives but securing a donor can be like finding a needle in a haystack.

Be The Match is a nonprofit, national registry where people can sign up to donate their stem cells. More than 35 million people around the world have volunteered yet only a small percentage of those donors are Americans, and even the registry admits most Americans dont know it exists.

The mother of a 12-year-old boy with leukemia has set out to change that.

Mandy Goldman is a hairdresser who lives with her husband and four children outside Boston. She remembers the devastating day five years ago when doctors told her the chemotherapy they gave her son Mateo Goldman, 9 years old at the time, didnt work.

They told us that our only option of curing Mateo was a bone marrow transplant, she says, a risky procedure that often involves a host of complications. But they had no other choice, she says.

The family got to work on the monumental task finding Mateo Goldman a close enough match.

Linda Matchan first reported the Goldman familys experience for The Boston Globe. In her research, she found very, very few people had any awareness of the need for bone marrow and stem cells donors. The awareness campaign around the subject is severely lacking compared to other campaigns like the importance of donating blood, she says.

For example, there's a little boy right now in North Carolina named Thor Forte, who's 10 and has sickle cell disease. And he has been waiting for literally half his life, five years, for a donor to be available, Matchan says. He's a tough match, but they finally did find somebody. And then when the time came for the procedure, the person backed out. So two years later, the boy is still waiting.

Fortunately, quickly after finding out Mateo Goldman didnt match with anyone in his family, he was paired with a donor on the registry from Germany. Mandy Goldman says Laura Stterlin of Frankfurt was ready to go and donate, ultimately saving her son.

Mateo Goldman wrote Stterlin, whose name he did not know at the time, a thank you note reading: Dear Donor, thank you for giving me the bone marrow. You feel like youre already part of my family, he says.

And unlike usual Make-A-Wish requests, Mateo Goldman asked to meet Stterlin in person halfway across the world. The trip to Germany was planned for summer of 2020 but has since been canceled due to the pandemic.

In 2019 when she was reporting this story, Matchan had a trip planned to Germany. She ended up meeting Stterlin and hearing the story of how she became a donor. Stterlin said she was at a sporting event with her husband when she got hungry and went on the hunt for some grub.

Dear Donor, thank you for giving me the bone marrow. You feel like youre already part of my family.

Germany has a robust public service campaign to get citizens to donate bone marrow, Matchan says. So it came to no surprise to Stterlin when she came across a kiosk to sign up.

Just three months later, she got a call and an email from the registry saying that there is somebody in the United States for whom she could be a match and was asked if she would donate, Matchan says. A couple of days later, she went into the hospital and did the donation.

Stterlins stem cells then crossed the Atlantic Ocean, making their way to America during a snowstorm.

The cells started working in Mateo Goldman right away but not without some difficulties, Mandy Goldman says. He battled total body stiffness from graft-versus-host disease, a complication of the transplant.

But, you know, Matteo's an amazing kid, she says, so through it all, he was smiling and making the best of it, even though he was suffering for a lot of the time.

Two years later, in July of 2020, the cancer came back. But since Mateo Goldmans first transplant, the science had evolved greatly.

So much so that his older brother, Leo Goldman, became a candidate to donate his cells for the second stem cell transplant.

I didn't realize how I could get my brother's cells, Mateo Goldman, now 12 years old, says. Once that sank in, I felt that it would connect me and my brother more.

Right before Christmas last year, the family got extraordinary news: Mateo Goldman had zero cancer in his bone marrow, Mandy Goldman says.

Now the mom of four is on a mission to raise awareness on stem cell donations and share the story of how it saved her sons life.

The amazing feeling Leo got from being able to be the person who saved his brother's life is something he's going to carry with him forever, she says. And even Laura [Stterlin], she gave him three and a half years of his life that we get to spend with him. I just really want to educate people about how empowering it is to do something so incredible for somebody else.

When she started talking to others to raise awareness, she was shocked to discover how fearful people were in committing to be a donor.

If people could see the trauma these patients go through her son had a drain placed in his stomach, total body radiation, chemotherapy that left him head-to-toe in a skin-burning rash she says then maybe they wouldnt be scared to dedicate a small action for someone whose only cure is through a stem cell transplant.

Once people are educated about how much of a difference it makes, she says, then I feel like they would do it.

Leukemia is a type of cancer that affects the blood. The two most common types in children are acute lymphoblastic leukemia and acute myelogenous leukemia.

In a person with leukemia, blood cells are released into the bloodstream before they are fully formed, so there are fewer healthy blood cells in the body.

Below, we describe the types of childhood leukemia, the symptoms, and the treatments. We then look at when to contact a doctor, what questions to ask, and where to find support.

Childhood leukemia is the most common form of cancer in children. It affects up to 3,800 children under the age of 15 in the United States each year.

Leukemia occurs when bone marrow releases new blood cells into the bloodstream before they are fully mature.

These immature blood cells do not function as they should, and eventually, the number of immature cells overtakes the number of healthy ones.

Leukemia can affect red and white blood cells and platelets.

The bone marrow produces stem cells. A blood stem cell can become a myeloid stem cell or a lymphoid stem cell.

Lymphoid stem cells become white blood cells. Myeloid stem cells can become:

Leukemia is typically acute or chronic, and chronic types are rare in children. They can include chronic myeloid leukemia or chronic lymphocytic leukemia.

Most childhood leukemias are acute, meaning that they progress quickly and need treatment as soon as possible.

Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is the most common type in children, accounting for 75% of childhood leukemia cases.

It affects cells called lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell.

In a person with ALL, the bone marrow releases a large number of underdeveloped white blood cells called blast cells. As the number of these increases, the number of red blood cells and platelets decreases.

There are two subtypes of ALL: B-cell and T-cell.

In most childhood cases of ALL, the cancer develops in the early forms of B-cells. The other type, T-cell ALL, typically affects older children.

Research from 2020 reports that the majority of people diagnosed with ALL are under 18 and typically between 2 and 10 years old.

The American Cancer Society report that children under 5 years old have the highest risk of developing ALL and that this risk slowly declines until a person reaches their mid-20s.

The outlook for ALL depends on the subtype, the persons age, and factors specific to each person.

Myeloid leukemias account for approximately 20% of childhood leukemia cases, and most myeloid leukemias are acute.

Acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) affects white blood cells other than the lymphocytes. It may also affect red blood cells and platelets.

AML can begin in:

Juvenile myelomonocytic leukemia (JMML) accounts for approximately 12% of leukemia cases in children.

This rare type is neither acute nor chronic. JMML begins in the myeloid cells, and it typically affects children younger than 2 years.

Symptoms can include:

The symptoms of leukemia may be nonspecific similar to those of other common childhood illnesses.

A doctor will ask how long the child has been experiencing the symptoms, which can include:

According to the American Cancer Society, most children with leukemia have no known risk factors. There is no way to prevent leukemia from developing.

Because there are very few lifestyle-related or environmental causes of childhood leukemia, it is very unlikely that a caregiver can do anything to help prevent the disease.

A childs outlook depends on the type of leukemia. It is important to keep in mind that current estimates do not take into account recent advances in technology and medicine.

For example, the most recent 5-year survival rate estimates reflect the experiences of children who received their diagnoses and treatments more than 5 years ago.

The American Cancer Society report that the 5-year survival rate for children with ALL is 90%. The same rate for children with AML is 6570%.

Childhood leukemia is typically acute, which means that it develops quickly. As a result, a person should contact a doctor if they notice any of the symptoms.

The most common type of childhood leukemia is ALL, representing 3 out of 4 leukemia cases in children.

Treatment may include a combination of chemotherapy, targeted drugs, immunotherapy, stem cell transplants, surgery, and radiation.

The prognosis depends on the type of leukemia and the childs age.

This diagnosis can affect mental as well as physical health, and the effects can extend to caregivers, family members, and friends. Many different resources are available for support.

A little late to the party, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently issued a new guidance that requires employers to obtain informed consent from employees before testing them for COVID-19.

Last October, the CDC released its original guidance on employer testing, but didnt get around to issuing the revised guidance containing the informed consent requirement until Jan. 21. The new guidance also includes measures an employer can take to ensure employees are fully supported in their decision-making.

The new guidance states: Workplace-based testing should not be conducted without the employees informed consent. Informed consent requires disclosure, understanding and free choice, and is necessary for an employee to act independently and make choices according to their values, goals and preferences.

Another earlier guidance issued by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) also directed employers to obtain informed consent before testing, note attorneys for the law firm of Jackson Lewis. Many state and federal directives also stress the role of testing when sending workers home and allowing them to return to work after they have recovered from the disease.

In its new guidance, CDC urges employers to provide the workers who will be tested with complete and understandable information about how the employers testing program may impact employees lives, such as if a positive test result or declination to participate in testing may mean exclusion from work.

When an employer is developing a COVID-19 testing program, the CDC recommends that the following basic considerations be addressed:

Why is the employer offering the test to begin with?

How frequently will employees be tested?

How to effectively obtain employee consent.

What to do if an employee declines to be tested.

The CDC also offers a list of key measures an employer should implement when developing a testing program to ensure that an employees informed consent is obtained and a supportive environment is created. They are:

Make sure safeguards are in place to protect an employees privacy and confidentiality.

Provide complete and understandable information about how the employers testing program may impact employees lives, such as if a positive test result occurs or that a declination to participate in testing may mean exclusion from work.

Explain any parts of the testing program an employee would consider especially important when deciding whether to participate. This involves explaining the key reasons that may guide their decision.

Provide information about the testing program in the employees preferred language using non-technical terms. Consider obtaining employee input on the readability of the information. Employers can use this tool provided by the CDC to create clear messages.

Encourage supervisors and coworkers to avoid pressuring employees to participate in testing.

Encourage and answer questions during the consent process. The consent process is active information sharing between an employer or their representative and an employee, in which the employer discloses the information, answers questions to facilitate understanding, and promotes the employees free choice.

The Jackson Lewis attorneys remind employers that, in order to ensure informed consent, an employee must be provided with certain disclosures regarding the workplace testing program.

These must include disclosures required in the Food and Drug Administration emergency use authorization patient fact sheet for the particular test, such as the type of the test, how the test will be performed, and known and potential risks.

Importantly, these disclosures must be provided during the consent process; meaning, employers will have to know this information and ensure it is provided to employees prior to the employee agreeing to the test, the attorneys stress.

They say employers need to consider which aspects of the testing program may be more relevant than others to an employees decision about whether to accept an offered test and include the appropriate disclosures. Other areas to consider include the process for scheduling tests and how the cost of the tests will be covered; and what employees should expect at the testing site, such as screening.

Other such considerations should include covering what will be the recommended next steps that are expected to occur if an employee tests positive, and what assistance will be made available should an employee be injured while the test is administered.

Privacy and security issues are top priorities to consider when implementing such a program, the attorneys warn. For example, employers must consider what personal information must be supplied to the test provider (for example, name, date of birth, insurance and other information), the test results to follow, and the myriad of issues that arise once that information is obtained.

The employer must look at whether, where and for how long the organization will retain the results. Other questions that need to be answered include how will personal information be kept confidential and secure, and how will the employer keep the results confidential and secure, along with who will have access to the results?

Employee test results are considered confidential medical information and, while not subject to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) in the employer-employee context, this information may be protected under state and common law.

Consider, for example, that some states, (such as California and Florida) include medical information as part of the definition of personal information under their breach notification laws, the attorneys point out. Accordingly, if that information is breached, which could include access to the information by an unauthorized party, notification to affected individuals and relevant state agencies may be required.

In addition, they remind employers that statutory and common law obligations mandate that employers safeguard employee personal information, which may include information about their physical health, such as the test results or information provided by the employee before taking the test.

Thus, maintaining reasonable safeguards to protect such information is prudent, the Jackson Lewis attorneys say. This could include access management measures, and record retention and destruction policies. It also may include clear guidelines for making disclosures of this information and whether authorization is needed before it may be disclosed to, or accessed by, a third party.

The attorneys also remind employers that workplace temperature and symptom screening protocols have been mandated or recommended by nearly every state and city across the country. These measures are essential in halting the spread of the virus and ensuring a safe and healthy workplace and workforce. Nevertheless, organizations must consider the legal risks, challenges and requirements before implementing such measures.

People in the United States are living under a mountain of stress, from a pandemic that shows no signs of abating to political unrest and economic instability.

As we near the one-year marker for the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States, adults throughout the nation are reporting their highest stress levels since the start of the health crisis early last year.

The new survey Stress in America: January 2021 Stress Snapshot from the American Psychological Association (APA) offers a view into how this collective stress caused by the pandemic and its related social and cultural upheaval is affecting us.

Nobody is immune to the stress thats happening right now, different people are experiencing different levels of stress overall, said C. Vaile Wright, PhD, APAs senior director of health care innovation. We just werent built to maintain this level of stress and hypervigilance and hyperarousal for this length of time.

Wright told Healthline that given people are reporting their highest levels of stress since the beginning of the pandemic, people are showing a lot of stress-related symptoms and emotions.

Faced with the pandemic and political and economic uncertainties, we are almost at a breaking point of so many stressors, with many of them out of our control.

The survey was conducted online by The Harris Poll on behalf of the APA. It ran from Jan. 21 to 25 and questioned 2,076 people 18 and older in the United States.

The survey revealed 84 percent of adults in the United States say the country has serious societal issues that need to be addressed.

It also found the average stress level of respondents over the course of the prior month to be 5.6 on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being little to no stress and 10 standing at a great deal of stress.

This is higher than stress levels from other APA Stress in America surveys conducted since last April.

Zeroing in further, 84 percent of adults said they experienced at least one emotion tied to prolonged stress in the prior 2 weeks, with the most common being anxiety at 47 percent, sadness at 44 percent, and anger at 39 percent.

And 67 percent said that the challenges the United States is facing now is overwhelming.

I think weve sort of seen this progression over the last three to four to five years, with people really reporting stress driven by national-level kinds of issues, Wright said. Whereas before, it was more work, family life, money, those sorts of things that we have some more control over more or less.

We are as a nation experiencing this collective trauma at this point, she said.

There was some optimism, though. About 9 in 10 adults said they hope the country will move toward a place of unity. Wright said this particularly stood out to her because it shows the large majority of Americans regardless of party affiliation want to move toward unity.

It makes sense that this is a desire shared by many. The survey shows that 81 percent of respondents cited the future of our nation as a significant source of stress, while 80 percent and 74 percent pointed to the pandemic and political unrest, respectively.

The report also shows that 66 percent of adults said the breach at the Capitol on Jan. 6 was a significant stressor.

As with most aspects of American life, the survey showed how some groups are more vulnerable to stress than others. It found 74 percent of Black adults found the attack on the Capitol a source of stress versus 65 percent of white adults and 60 percent of Hispanic adults.

Dr. Michael Young, service chief of The Retreat at Sheppard Pratt, a psychiatric hospital in the Baltimore, Maryland, suburb of Towson, said that it was not a surprise that the survey revealed more than 4 in 5 adults in this country are displaying signs of prolonged stress.

I think one major factor involved is simply that confirmed COVID-19 cases have remained high, requiring restrictions to be maintained at very high levels across many parts of the country, said Young, who was not affiliated with the survey.

Social connection is a fundamental source of well-being and renewal for most people, and the ongoing social restrictions from the pandemic continue to disrupt many of the well-established social routines, he added.

Young told Healthline that this cumulative buildup of stress can have a domino effect on our health. It can impact our physical health and well-being and emotional health.

Stress can negatively impact our immune system, cardiovascular health, and worsen the experience of chronic pain and other medical conditions, he said.

Dr. Judith Cuneo, associate director of clinical programs and an integrative obstetrician-gynecologist at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) Osher Center for Integrative Medicine, said that stress can cause irritability and exacerbate ones anxiety and fear.

Just a low or depressed mood, simply, sadness, can affect peoples resilience and over time that sort of chronic stress and low-level stress can begin to affect our health and reduce our immune function and worsen chronic diseases that are present and stress-related illnesses that are present, said Cuneo, who was not affiliated with the survey.

She said worsening chronic pain can impact our relationships with those we are close to and affect our ability to do day-to-day tasks, even our jobs especially as many are dealing with the shifts associated with working from home as we shelter-in-place during the pandemic.

That low-level chronic stress can put us into that sympathetic nervous system activation, that fight or flight stress reaction, she told Healthline. What follows is a cascade that happens that we may not be aware of, physical changes like our heart rate goes up, our blood pressure goes up, our hyperarousal deteriorates.

Cuneo said all of this leaves us anxious and we have less reliance to handle these stressors. We can develop maladaptive coping mechanisms, evolving our responses in sometimes unhealthy ways to respond to this stress.

It can feel intimidating to tackle these sources of stress, especially given that they stem from what can feel like larger-than-life national, even global, concerns.

Young said its best to focus on basic self-care strategies that include balanced eating and sleeping routines, and daily exercise to boost our immune systems and protect our physical health.

I suggest prioritizing self-care and role model this for others, he said. Participating in an online yoga class, practicing daily mindfulness meditation, going for a nature walk, and taking the time to do enjoyable activities like reading a favorite book or watching a favorite show with loved ones can all be restorative activities that combat stress.

Young added that activities like playing chess and practicing yoga have been two effective methods hes personally turned to during this time.

I encourage everyone to find the healthy activities that work for you in reducing stress and incorporate them into your life on a daily basis, he said.

Cuneo said that one big challenge for a lot of people over the course of the past year has been the fact that access to typical outlets for this stress relief has been closed off to people due to COVID-19.

Many have felt unsafe visiting gyms or even going to see their doctors or therapists.

Due to this, underlying conditions and chronic illnesses have gone untreated and been poorly managed.

This has further added to peoples stresses as they deal with the continuing pandemic and national political ruptures.

Cuneo echoed Young and said that sleep is one of the most accessible ways to take care of yourself during this time.

Physical activity of some kind as well as eating nutritious diets are surefire ways to combat stress and improve overall health and wellness.

Cuneo highlighted the work done at the Osher Center for Integrative Medicine that includes mind-body practices everything from mindfulness meditation to yoga to biofeedback practice as ways to help the body heal and for you to mentally and physically respond to stress.

Wright pointed to another major source of stress: technology.

Many of us receive a constant daily barrage of notifications that share all kinds of distressing information.

Wright said that its important to give yourself a break. Turn off your notifications, turn on settings giving you specific daily time limits for certain apps on your phone, as well as instill healthy behaviors around technology in your household.

This can include modeling behavior for children. (No cellphone at the dinner table, please.)

She said its necessary to avoid the doomscrolling that can consume and derail your day.

All of this stress management comes with setting realistic expectations for yourself for how to handle the ups and downs of our current era.

I think a lot of people were really hoping going into 2021 that there would be this sense of relief, and I think what we are seeing is that it hasnt happened yet, Wright said.

Thats another important message for people: To realize they are not alone in still feeling high levels of stress, Wright said. Its important for them to not judge themselves too harshly for it.

Last week, long-time Chatham County Board of Elections worker Billy Wooten was named interim elections supervisor.

On Monday, hell officially take the reigns, less than two weeks after 16-year veteran Russell Bridges announced hed be retiring. Bridges' last day is Feb. 28.

Wooten, a North Carolina native, has served the Board of Elections in multiple capacities for a little over 20 years. Most recently, he served as the lead trainer for poll managers and workers and served as the manager for the hand audit of Georgias Presidential Election in 2020.

When he started as a clerk at a polling place on Wilmington Island all those years ago, he hoped to better represent the diverse electorate of Chatham County. He says that goal hasnt changed.

They didn't look like Savannah. You know, they weren't inclusive. There weren't any men. There weren't any younger people there. There weren't any people of color, Wooten said. I thought, if people are working in something as important as the election, they should look like the electorate.

He found out in late December that Bridges had suggested he be the person to take over after he retired.

I'm willing to do whatever I can do to ensure a peaceful transition and to help the board continue the process of having honest and accurate elections, Wooten said.

Wooten said with conversations about combining the BOE and the Chatham Board of Registrars currently welling up, his takeover as the interim supervisor is aptly timed.

There's always uncertainty when someone retires, and not only that, but the possibility that the elections and registration office would be combined, Wooten said. It just felt as if it was probably the best time to have an interim, and let some of that dust settle.

He has served five terms on the Coastal Workforce Board, and has served three terms as chairman of the board for First City Network, a non-profit LGBT organization in Savannah, and served as the first director of the Savannah LGBT Center.

Additionally, hes a 25-year member of the Savannah Philharmonic Chorus and a founding member of the integrative medicine/music program developed in partnership with Memorial Health University Medical Center.

All in all, Wooten said, his goal is to keep the board running smoothly.

I hope we continue to improve, continue to follow the laws, follow the guidelines the state has put forth, to continue having honest, accurate and fair elections, with as few problems as possible, Wooten said. You know, there are a lot of moving parts, and it takes a lot of people to conduct elections. And luckily, we've got a real good team.

With the decline of organized religion and a decades-old drop in church attendance, people have largely made their spiritual life into something private and personal. The rise of meditation and yoga attests to this. But it is hard to fix your sight on a spiritual goal if you dont believe in heaven from the Western perspective or enlightenment from the Eastern.

Looking around at the tone of modern life, I think an important goal is worth seizing on: the divine feminine. Being scientific, rational, and technical, secular society seems to have less time for values that Carl Jung would have included in the feminine archetype, that religions cast as goddesses or a motherly figure like the Virgin Mary, and which most of us identify with our mothers growing up.

But at a deeper level, the divine feminine represents certain values that human beings have long cherished. Half of human nature is represented by the feminine in both sexes, as reflected in the qualities of the ancient Greek and Roman goddesses.

Even though these are innate qualities in the psyche, there are times when feminine values decline, and then the resulting imbalance brings problems. Global warming is the imbalance that resulted from too much devotion to science, technology, and progress and too little devotion to nurturing the environment. The extinction of species comes about when the human drive to treat Nature exactly as we want obscures the larger picture, which is that we belong in the total scheme of nature, or Mother Nature as tradition called it.

The age of world wars is past us for the moment, but the same thirst for power and authority drives nations, and war is visited on the innocent no matter how many widows and grieving mothers appear on the news. The dreadful Syrian devastation is the rank product of masculine tolerance for utter violent annihilation without check. It would be heartbreaking to continue such a listsimply the fact that the world has lived under nuclear threat for seventy years is evidence enough that life has gone seriously out of balance.

It is up to us individually to look inside and see where we can allow feminine qualities to correct a personal imbalance. The adjectives that apply to the personal feminine are love, affection, forgiveness, compassion, allowing, nurturing, and creative. They need to be present in everyones life, whether you are a man or woman, and every child needs to be exposed to them.

As things stand, children hardly have a choice to find the right balance of masculine and feminine in themselves. The two halves are not rivals; One doesnt succeed by overwhelming the other. Yet this seems to be the ethos children absorb when they look around a see a world that exults in forceful power, domination, flagrant abuse of minority rights, corporate greed without regard for human consequences, violent videos games, and online pornography.

Morality cannot be legislated, and if you tell people they are supporting the wrong values, the most likely result is that they will entrench themselves in those values even more stubbornly. The shift has to begin inside with a sense that something is missing, and that this something is connected to the feminine energy that has been allowed to dwindle almost to the vanishing point.

One now commonly hears the opinion that the world would be better off if women were heads of state instead of men. Its hard to disagree, but at the very least this country needs more than Nancy Pelosi and Kamala Harris as admired role models. We also need a shift in attitude, as evidenced by the cruelty, unfairness, anti-feminine prejudice, and spite directed at Hilary Clinton in the 2016 election. It would be bad enough if she became a sacrificial lamb in the eyes of history, the victim who showed people how much they needed to wake up and reflect on their appetite for injustice and inequality.

It would be even worse if the 2016 fiasco became the model for treating women candidates in the future. The prevailing notion is that this is a mans world, and if a woman wants to succeed in it, she deserves all the knocks that would be given to a man. Only a society blind to the value of the divine feminine thinks that way. Everyone should do everything in good conscience to overturn such an ugly, harsh, unforgiving attitude.

Ronald Nastasi learned eight years ago that he had glaucoma a common eye condition and one of the leading causes of blindness. Although his condition was mild at that time, he knew that if he didnt start taking proper care of his eyes, the disease had the potential to become severe.

This could sneak up on you, and then usually its too latethe damage is done. There wont be any symptoms until you actually have irreversible damage, Nastasi said.

Glaucomas are a group of conditions that cause damage to the optic nerve, often due to elevated eye pressure. At the time, Nastasis primary eye doctor prescribed daily eye drops, and tried noninvasive laser treatments to reduce his eye pressure. While this therapy was initially successful, over the years they found that these were only working for Nastasis left eye. His right eye pressure continued to rise, and Nastasi found himself being told to use drops six times a day.

At this point, Nastasis eye doctor recommended he see a glaucoma specialist, worried he may start losing his vision. Nastasi wanted to stay local, and after doing extensive research, he chose to see Jonathan M. Skarie, MD, PhD at Ohio Eye Associates. Skarie is a local ophthalmologist and the only fellowship trained glaucoma specialist in the Mansfield area.

Skarie met with Nastasi for an evaluation. He confirmed Nastasis right eye had a very elevated eye pressure and noted signs of optic nerve damage. At this point they discussed glaucoma surgery. Skarie gave Nastasi the option of having XEN Gel Stent surgery a recently developed surgical implant designed to lower eye pressure in glaucoma patients.

(XEN Gel) doesnt require stitches in the eye like the old kind where they put these drains and tubing in or made incisions in your eyes. This is very minimal, and thats why (eye doctors) really like it. Its not much risk to the eye, Nastasi said.

Skarie, whos been with Ohio Eye Associates since 2017, is a cataract and glaucoma surgeon. He specializes in all aspects of glaucoma medical, laser and surgical care, in addition to managing complex cataracts. He is trained in the latest advances in glaucoma surgical options, including Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS) techniques, such as the XEN Gel Stent.

MIGS options have really changed the way we approach glaucoma management. In the past, the only surgical options for glaucoma were much more invasive and high risk surgeries that were often uncomfortable for the patient. While these types of surgeries are still required in certain cases, we now have a wide range of options that are safer, offer easier recovery and are effective across a broad range of glaucoma types and severity, Skarie said.

Glaucoma becomes more common with age, though there are rare, aggressive forms that occur in younger adults and even children. Fortunately, these more aggressive types of glaucoma are often picked up during childhood vision screens or eye care visits for glasses, according to Skarie.

The biggest challenge of glaucoma is that the vast majority of cases are asymptomatic until late in disease when severe damage has already occurred. Glaucoma is usually only identified during an eye exam. Per Skarie, the American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends regular visits to the eye doctor starting at age 40, even if you have no known eye or medical problems.

A comprehensive, dilated eye exam should identify if you have glaucoma or if you are at high risk of developing it. If it is caught early, it can usually be easily managed and vision loss can be avoided, Skarie said.

Nastasi recently underwent the minimally invasive surgery and sailed through it. Skarie will continue to monitor his condition throughout the postoperative period. He only needed a week of limitations on activities, but he felt back to normal by the next day.

Nastasi is pleased with Skaries work and the level of care hes given throughout.

Lawmakers from Canadas federal opposition Conservative Party have embarked on a campaign to place a legal and environmental dispute in Michigan over the Line 5 oil pipeline at the feet of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Several Conservative MPs have been sharing an image on social media that warns of an impending Liberal pipeline failure if the Line 5 pipeline, running through the environmentally sensitive Straits of Mackinac, is shut down a decision that was taken months ago by Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, and that Enbridge is currently challenging in U.S. federal court. The Calgary-based energy company is seeking an injunction to stop the state from revoking the pipelines 1953 easement, which Whitmer said she did after the company refused to take action to protect the Great Lakes, and repeatedly violated the terms of the easement by ignoring structural problems with its aging, dented pipeline. While this legal drama is playing out, Conservatives are also urging their followers to sign a petition that calls on Trudeau to appeal to U.S. President Joe Biden to intervene in the pipeline dispute in order to prevent Whitmer from following through with her decision. Conservative Party Leader Erin O'Toole also wrote an op-ed in the National Post accusing the Liberals of being silent on the matter and suggesting the pipeline was not a priority for the prime minister. On Thursday, his party called for a special House of Commons committee that would address Line 5, among other Canada-U.S. issues. Trudeau, however, has said in Parliament that the federal government and Canadas ambassador in Washington have been advocating for Line 5 to U.S. officials. Transport Minister Omar Alghabra also revealed Feb. 3 he has spoken with U.S. Transport Secretary Pete Buttigieg about the pipeline. Line 5 is a vital source of fuel for homes and businesses on both sides of the border, said Trudeau on Feb. 3. That is something we have argued strongly, and will continue to argue strongly, with members of the U.S. administration. Our ongoing engagement with the Biden administration and with partners in the United States on this and many issues continues to be on the front burner. Whitmer said she was ending the easement because Enbridge was imposing an unacceptable risk of a catastrophic oil spill in the Great Lakes. The pipeline lies exposed at the bottom of a busy shipping channel in the straits, she said, vulnerable to anchor strikes, similar dangerous impacts, and the inherent risks of pipeline operations. A 2018 study by Michigan Techs Great Lakes Research Center said a worst-case oil spill would affect over 643 kilometres of shoreline, releasing up to 58,000 barrels of crude oil into the Great Lakes and putting dozens of species and thousands of acres at risk. A 2016 University of Michigan study showed a majority of open water on Lake Huron and 15 per cent of open water in Lake Michigan could be affected. Critics also point to a history of actions by Enbridge to fortify the dual pipes that run along the bottom of the straits, including using anchor supports to hold the pipes in place. They note incidents that the pipes have faced, like being dented by an anchor in 2018, and argue the 67-year-old pipeline has outlived its lifespan. Green Party Leader Annamie Paul said she had no reason to doubt the results of the research that informed Whitmers decision. We know that the line is very old, we know it has begun to deteriorate, we know that its dented in places, we know it would be catastrophic if there was a major oil spill with that line, so I am sure she has taken all of that into account, Paul said. Enbridge has insisted that the worst-case oil spill scenario is extraordinarily unlikely to happen and has touted its safety measures, including regular inspections of the pipeline and 24-hour monitoring of the straits crossing. The company is also moving forward with building what it considers a safer tunnel under the straits to house the pipeline. The Great Lakes Tunnel will encase a replacement section of Line 5 well below the lakebed, eliminating the risk of an anchor strike and virtually eliminating the potential of any (oil) release from Line 5 into the straits, said Enbridge spokesperson Ryan Duffy. There has not yet been a court date set for the case, Duffy said Feb. 2. We would prefer to meet and come to a resolution, and we continue to offer to meet with the state to resolve any differences, he said. OToole declined to answer questions for this story through his director of communications. Paul said Canada was at a crossroads in many respects, and needs to be planning for a green recovery. She said she hoped the Conservatives and all other parties join the Greens in preparing for a sustainable future that leaves no one behind. We join the 27 countries of the European Union, and many of our international peers who have decided that the future is green, the future is in clean tech and renewables, and the investments we should be making are investments in those sectors rather than in sectors that are in an irreversible decline, she said. Line 5 carries Western Canadian oil to Ontario, where it supplies refineries that produce gasoline and other fossil fuels, and feeds another pipeline that heads to Quebec. Conservatives are warning of fuel shortages, higher fuel prices and job losses linked to the industry if Line 5 closes; 6,500 good-paying jobs in Sarnia, Ontario are on the line, OToole wrote in his op-ed. It is unclear to what extent this will materialize. Sarnia Mayor Mike Bradley has suggested the number of potential job losses in his city would be closer to 3,000, but he has also said he cant estimate how many jobs would actually be lost if alternative sources like rail and trucks were used. That is what Imperial Oil, which runs a Sarnia refinery, is looking at doing, according to a report in the Globe and Mail. The energy company has already laid out plans to obtain crude oil through other pipelines, or by moving it on ships or by rail. Paul said she understood the implications for Canada, but it was a false choice for politicians of any stripe to portray the Line 5 pipeline battle as a choice between jobs and the environment. There are those who benefit from creating those false, binary choices. We know that we protect ourselves the best, that we create more jobs, if we protect our environment as well and we know that we cannot survive without a healthy environment.
