Sports Medicine – University of North Carolina at Greensboro

The Sports Medicine Concentration is designed to provide a pre-professional program of study with a focus on Kinesiology that also encompasses other fields of science (biology, chemistry, physics, health, nutrition, and pharmacology) that are often prerequisite courses for graduate and professional programs that deal with health care of the physically active. This concentration is a first step toward a career in the field of sports medicine. After completing this program students will have the necessary academic and clinical experience to allow for future study in allied health fields. Examples include, but are not limited to athletic training (available in the department), physical therapy, occupational therapy, physician's assistant, podiatry, dentistry, and medicine. Again, all of these fields require additional graduate or professional study.

Formal admission to the Sports Medicine concentration requires:

Successful completion of BIO 111, BIO 271, and KIN 250

Cumulative GPA of at least 2.80 for admittance to program. A cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 will be required for KIN 441.

Completion of application in Kinesiology Department office prior to enrollment in KIN 353, KIN 390, KIN 391, or KIN 441. Student should obtain detailed information early in their program of study to identify themselves as potential Kinesiology Sports Medicine concentration students.

The Sports Medicine Center – Cone Health – Greensboro, NC

The Cone Health Sports Medicine Fellowship program is located in the Sports Medicine Center on The Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital campus.The office has four treatment rooms, a room specifically for orthotic preparation and a room specifically for performing musculoskeletal ultrasounds.There is also a conference room where the weekly seminar is held.

The office is fully electronic (no paper charts), using Cone HealthLink (EPIC) for scheduling, billing and EMR.Radiographs and other images are available electronically through the PACs system which is integrated into EPIC.In-house ultrasound can be loaded directly into the medical record as well.

Exercise treadmills are done on campus at the Moses Cone Heart and Vascular Center.

There are9 clinics each week.Each fellow has two regularly scheduled clinics per week with a third clinic occurring bi-weekly on Friday mornings.Friday afternoons areset aside for seminar from 2 to 5 p.m.

The primary goal of the University of Rhode Island sports medicine staff is to provide the best medical care possible to all varsity student-athletes. The entire medical staff is devoted to the education, health and injury care, prevention, evaluation and rehabilitation of athletic related injuries. The sports medicine staff is dedicated to returning athletes to their sport in the safest and quickest manner as possible.

The sports medicine staff is comprised of athletic trainers who are certified by the National Athletic Association, and are licensed by the state of Rhode Island. Athletic training students (interns), designated team physicians, team orthopedists and a host of medical consultants and sub-specialists supplement the primary staff.

The physical well-being of all URI student-athletes is our first priority. Treatment of all student-athletes, as a result of athletic injury, is administered by the Sports Medicine Department in conjunction with Student Health Services and our team physicians. The scope of the athletic training services encompasses various domains which include injury recognition, treatment, rehabilitation, prevention, education and counseling that will enable the athlete to maintain optimal quality of life beyond the span of athletic competition.

The main athletic training room is located in the Tootell Athletic Complex.

Hours of Operation:7:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m., excluding one hour (Noon - 1 p.m.) for lunch.

The Division of Pediatric Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism Consultation provides diagnostic and therapeutic services for children with diabetes mellitus, hypoglycemia and disorders of physical growth, sexual maturation, thyroid function, pituitary function, and calcium and phosphorous metabolism. The Pediatric Endocrine Testing Center provides diagnostic endocrine tests for patients (both children and adults) in areas of endocrinology and carbohydrate, amino acid, and mineral and lipid metabolism. The center addresses growth abnormalities and the range of conditions that can cause them.

The Nutrition Consultation Service provides consultative and follow-up service by a physician and dietitian for children up to 18 years of age with obesity problems and associated disorders.

Referrals are required from primary care physicians or other Childrens Hospital specialty services. These should be accompanied by a written reason for the referral together with related patient records and growth charts. Referrals for patients enrolled in managed care insurance plans also require authorization from the primary care physician and sometimes from the insurance provider. All necessary referral and authorization forms must be received before the patients visit and include separate authorization for each physician, diabetes nurse educator, dietitian, laboratory and X-ray services. Endocrinology is the study of the endocrine system. Endocrine glands secrete hormones into the bloodstream that regulate the function of other cells and organ systems of the body. The endocrine system consists of separate glands such as the adrenals, thyroid, parathyroids, pituitary and pancreas. Common endocrine disorders include osteoporosis, diabetes and hypothyroidism.

An endocrinologist is a physician who studies and treats imbalances of the endocrine system. Endocrinologists play important roles in patient care and academic research. They are experts in their field and should serve as your main physician for endocrine disease-related problems.

The thyroid gland, located in the neck, makes and secretes thyroid hormone which affects nearly all tissues of the body. Its function is to regulate the bodys metabolism. Common thyroid problems include:

Hyperthyroidism the production of too much thyroid hormone. It can produce symptoms such as palpitations, sweating and weight loss.

Hypothyroidism the production of too little thyroid hormone. It can produce symptoms such as fatigue, weight gain and constipation.

Thyroiditis inflammation within the thyroid gland.

Goiters enlargements of the thyroid gland.

Solitary thyroid nodules growths within the thyroid gland.

Thyroid cancer a malignant growth within the thyroid gland.

The parathyroid glands are four small glands located behind the thyroid gland which secrete parathyroid hormone, controlling the bodys calcium levels.

Hyperparathyroidism a disease of calcium balance is one of the most common disorders of the parathyroid glands. The pancreas is located behind the stomach and secretes insulin, glucagon, somatostatin and other hormones. It controls blood sugar and glucose metabolism as well as helping control other endocrine cells of the digestive tract.

Diabetes is the most common disorder of the pancreas.

The adrenal glands are located on top of the kidneys and secrete adrenaline, aldosterone and cortisol. These hormones maintain salt balance, blood pressure, and help maintain fluid concentrations in the body. Common adrenal disorders include Addisons Disease, Cushings Syndrome, hyperaldosteronism and adrenal tumors.

The pituitary gland is located at the base of the brain and secretes hormones which control the activity of other glands such as the ovaries, testes, adrenals and thyroid. Common pituitary disorders include pituitary tumors, such as prolactinomas and hypopituitarism, a disorder in which pituitary hormone secretion is abnormally low.

The members of our Endocrinology Group Practice specialize in endocrinology and metabolism disorders, including diabetes, osteoporosis, disorders of bone and calcium metabolism and disorders of the pituitary, thyroid, parathyroid and adrenal glands. We will work with you to evaluate your condition and prepare an individualized treatment plan to fit your needs.

The condition and quality of the specimen we receive plays a major factor in the accuracy of test results. Please do not send whole blood. Serum is the preferred sample type for the majority of the endocrine tests we offer, with the exception of ACTH, which requires EDTA plasma. Please review the links for:

Results Reporting and Consultations

Contact the Endocrinology Laboratory directly at (607) 253-3673 regarding any test results, interpretations, or sample discrepancies. Veterinarians or the authorized submitter should have their AHDC account number ready when making inquiries about samples that have already been sent and tested. Consultations by veterinarians and qualified staff are also provided at no charge for testing done within our laboratory. We prefer not to interpret test results from other laboratories since we will not be familiar with their test methods. The laboratory offers gratis re-testing of samples on a limited basis after consultation, assuming residual sample volume and quality are adequate for re-testing. About 27 million Americans live with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes. Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney failure, non-injury lower-limb amputations and new cases of adult blindness in the United States. Hypoglycemia, or insulin shock, occurs when blood sugar is too low, and can be very dangerous. At UofL Physicians-Endocrinology, our goals are to provide outstanding clinical care for patients with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes mellitus; to educate patients, the public and members of the health care profession about diabetes; and to advance understanding of diabetes by conducting high-quality research.

We work closely with primary care providers and with other UofL Physicians who are skilled in the diagnosis and treatment of diabetic complications, to create a large, multidisciplinary network to provide optimal care. Our diabetes program includes training in carbohydrate counting, insulin self-management, and insulin pumps. Our physicians and certified diabetes educator (CDE) provide education and support on how to manage diabetes and prevent diabetes complications.

Low HDL (high-density lipoprotein) and high LDL (low-density lipoprotein) are associated with heart disease and stroke. Our practice can help you lower your LDL cholesterol, raise your HDL cholesterol and reduce triglycerides while minimizing adverse side effects.

The pituitary gland is called the master gland because it controls the complex function of most other endocrine glands and is located at the base of the brain. We offer a multidisciplinary approach to treating patients with pituitary and hypothalamic disorders including acromegaly, Cushings syndrome, prolactinoma, chromophobe or non-functioning adenomas and thyroptroph adenomas, and the many conditions that cause hypopituitarism, as well as diabetes insipidus and low sodium (SIADH).

The adrenal glands produce hormones responsible for the maintenance of metabolic processes, salt/ water regulation and the response to stress. These hormones are cortisol, aldosterone and epinephrine. Addisons disease, hypertension with low potassium and pheochromocytoma are among the endocrine disorders of the adrenal glands that we treat.

Our Metabolic Bone Disease Program provides care for patients with primary hyperparathyroidism, hypoparathyroidism, Pagets disease, renal bone disease, disorders of vitamin D metabolism, male osteoporosis and transplantation-associated bone disease. We offer bone density testing for the diagnosis and follow-up of osteoporosis and other metabolic bone diseases. We work closely with our UofL Physicians endocrine surgeons to provide minimally invasive surgical treatment for parathyroid tumors. We also offer bone density testing for the diagnosis and follow-up of osteoporosis and other metabolic bone diseases.

We provide comprehensive medical services for patients with reproductive endocrine problems, including menstrual cycle abnormalities, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), menopause, premature ovarian failure, male hypogonadism including late onset male hypogonadism and pubertal disorders.

Patients with thyroid disorders include those with hyper- and hypothyroidism, thyroid nodules and thyroid cancer. Hyperthyroidism occurs when the body produces too much thyroid hormone causing symptoms including nervousness, heat intolerance and weight loss. In hypothyroidism, by contrast, the body produces too little thyroid hormone causing fatigue, cold intolerance, hair loss and weight gain, among other symptoms. At least 10 percent of women have hypothyroidism by the age of 50. We offer ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration of thyroid nodules including molecular testing, and we work with our Nuclear Medicine colleagues to use radioactive iodine (RAI) to scan or destroy thyroid cells that are overactive or malignant.

Our endocrinologists and nurse practitioner are highly trained specialists in endocrinology services and metabolic disorders in the Louisville area. They have received training at some of the finest institutions in the country, including the National Institutes of Health, Albert Einstein Medical Center and Emory University. They hold leadership positions in national organizations, including the Endocrine Society and the American Diabetes Association, and serve as consultants on NIH panels and on Veterans Affairs (VA) study sections.

As part of the UofL Physicians team, our endocrinologists frequently meet with other UofL Physicians specialists to evaluate and discuss our patients treatment. These specialists include ophthalmologists, nephrologists, radiologists and nuclear medicine specialists.
