Can coronavirus be transmitted through the eyes?

Yes, there is a small chance. We know that Covid-19 is transmitted through aerosol droplets thatspread through person-to-person contact, hence why experts attribute social distancing measures as essential in slowing the spread of the virus.

Research suggests that there's asmall chance that the eyes could act as an entry point for the virus.In March, scientists from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine found that eyes produce ACE-2, a protein used by the infection to bind cells, making eyes a target for the virus. In practice, this means if droplets from an infected persons sneeze or cough were to land on the eyes surface, the virus could enter the cells there. For this reason, its important to avoid touching your face as much as you can, as we know that the virus can live on certain surfaces for up to 72 hours.

There is also a small possibility that coronavirus can be spread through tears. A study undertaken in March by researchers from Singapore and the UK, which was published in Opthalmology, collected 64 tear samples from 17 patients with Covid-19 from the time they showed symptoms until they recovered about 20 days later. They found that the risk of transmission this way was low, and that infection was much more likely to occur through mucus and droplets expelled by coughing or sneezing.

There isn't much research in this area yet. However, Boris Johnson has claimed that he's wearing glasses for the first time in years as a result of the coronavirusand we do know that recovery from Covid-19can be long process which is different for everyone.Many people report symptoms, such as post-viral fatigue and shortness of breath, lingering long after they've recovered. A spokesperson for the Moorfields Eye Hospital said: At present, there is very little evidence to suggest that Covid-19 can affect eyesight.Cases where Covid-19 is recorded alongside an impact on eyesight are rare, so we cannot establish a direct causal effect. We need more data to be collected on Covid-19 related eye conditions to see if there is an association.

For ProfBastawrous, the greater risk for eye health comes from people not being able to accessroutineservices as a result of Covid-19.

"For some people with vision threatening conditions this is leading to loss of vision who would normally have been able to be treated," he said. "This situation is likely to get worse as a consequence of the disruption to health systems rather than a direct effect of the virus on the eyes of visual pathways."

The answer to this question largely remains up to personal judgement. According to a paper led by the Centre for Ocular Research and Education in Canada, there is currently no evidence that contact lens wearers have an increased risk of contracting Covid-19 compared with wearers of spectacles.

However, it is likely that those who wear contact lenses will touch their faces more, so in practical termsit could be worth swapping to glasses if youre worried.

For those who do decide to continuewearing lenses, the eye care companyEssilor advises people to be stringent about washing theirhands before and after touching their eyes.The same applies to glasses; to be safe, wash them regularly with warm soapy water and dry them with a disposable paper towel.

In England, people are nowfree to drive unlimited distances. However, if you are worried about your eyesight after contracting coronavirus, it might be worth referring to the highway code to check if it's safe to drive, rather than taking a trip to find out.

Currently, the highway code guidelines statethat to drive, you must be able to read a vehicle number platein good daylightfrom a distance of 20 metres (or 20.5 metres where the old style number plate is used). An extra outpatients department and day ward also feature in the proposed four-storey building on the Euxton Lane site.

Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (LTH) is seeking planning permission for the development from Chorley Council and has described the project as exciting.

The Local Democracy Reporting Service understands that the scheme is unrelated to the forthcoming public consultation over the future of the accident and emergency unit at the site, which also has implications for how the rest of the hospital would be used in future.

In January, it emerged that two out of the three options likely to form the basis of that consultation recommended that Chorley Hospital should become a centre of excellence for routine, pre-planned care the like of which could be accommodated by the planned new facility.

However, it is believed that the project will go ahead regardless of the outcome of that exercise, which has itself now been delayed by the coronavirus outbreak.

If permission is granted, the new unit is expected to be open by October 2021 and will bring all opthalmology servies under one roof on the site.

Existing facilities at the Royal Preston would be unaffected by the plans and continue to operate as they do currently.

Dr Geraldine Skailes, medical director at LTH, said: We are really pleased to be able to provide this additional facility which will help us to improve patient experience.

The unit will include a dedicated outpatient and diagnostic space as well as three additional theatres to provide extra capacity for patients requiring a variety of day case procedures.

The new unit will connect to the main hospital on the first and second floors with respective links to the existing outpatients department and theatres.

According to the planning application, staff facilities will be located on the ground floor, with the remaining space earmarked for future hospital expansion. The fourth floor will house the plant room.

The facility is set to be built on a part of the site currently partially occupied by a storage unit for sterilisation and decontamination, which will be relocated.

The development will see an existing staff car park expanded by 64 spaces to accommodate a total of 174 vehicles.

Highways England have requested that consideration of the application be deferred until the trust has provided further information about expected vehicle trips to the unit, so that their potential impact on junction eight of the M61 motorway can be assessed.

The role of diet with biologic aging has been studied and diet has been also found to be associated with age-related conditions linked to dementia, including cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

We were interested in the cognitive function of our participants who had another neurodegenerative disease, age-related macular degeneration (AMD). We had conducted two randomized controlled clinical trials designed to evaluate the role of oral supplements for the treatment of AMD. We also studied cognitive function in both clinical trials of nearly 8,000 participants who were followed for 10 years. We also evaluated the dietary habits of the participants with food frequency questionnaires (FFQ) at baseline. Cognitive function testing was conducted in the first study, the Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) near the end of the clinical trial while the AREDS2, the second study, evaluated cognitive function testing at baseline and every 2 years until year 6. AREDS study evaluated cognitive function with in-clinic study visits while AREDS2 was conducted using telephone interviews.

Our aim was to determine whether closer adherence to the alternative Mediterranean diet (aMED) was associated with impaired cognitive function these two studies. We were interested in the particular components of the Mediterranean diet that may be important. We also evaluated the interaction of genetics with the diet.

MedicalResearch.com: What are the main findings?

Response: Mediterranean diet adherence was associated with decreased risk of cognitive impairment. There was a dose response relationship in that the higher the adherence, the better the beneficial effect. The results were consistent between the two clinical trials of persons who did not have cognitive impairment at the baseline of the study but did have varying degrees of severity of AMD. The strength of this relationship of diet with cognitive function was fairly large with 40 to 50 % reduction.

Higher fish consumption was associated with decreased risk of cognitive impairment and slower cognitive decline. Fish may be the component that drives the effects of the Mediterranean diet on cognitive function to a certain extent. But in general, the Mediterranean diet with all its components may play a very important role in cognitive function.

MedicalResearch.com: What role did theApoE gene have on the results?

Response: Although APOE risk haplotypes were significantly associated with faster decline in cognitive impairment scores (p<0.0001) in general, APOE status did not influence the association of the Mediterranean diet with decreased risk of cognitive impairment and nor did it have an influence on the association of fish consumption with decreased risk of cognitive impairment and slower cognitive decline.

Response: It is important to consider possible modification with your diet. These are not the results of a randomized trial but the data are quite compelling. And other studies have supported this theory that you are what you eat. Eating fish twice a week has beneficial effects and having a Mediterranean diet has been demonstrated to reduce the risk of heart disease and impairment in cognition.

MedicalResearch.com: What recommendations do you have for future research as a result of this study?

Response: This is a study of association so it would be important to have randomized controlled clinical trials to test the effect of a Mediterranean Diet on cognitive function. A randomized trial (PREDIMED) conducted in Spain with comparisons between Mediterranean diet vs. low fat diet found that participants randomized to a Mediterranean diet had higher cognitive function scores after 6.5 years than those randomized to a low-fat control diet. The NIH is also supporting the Mediterranean-DASH Diet Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay (MIND) Study. This is a Phase III randomized controlled trial designed to test the effects of a 3-year intervention of a hybrid of the Mediterranean and DASH diets, called MIND, on cognitive decline among 600 individuals 65+ years without cognitive impairment who are overweight and have suboptimal diets, as described the clinicaltrials.gov. That would be the gold standard for establishing a potential treatment for cognitive impairment. This study is done in persons who are high risk of developing cognitive decline.

This isn't something you're going to see added to the Apple Pencil. It's not something Tim Cook is likely to announce at some future WWDC alongside an ARM Mac. But Apple's widespread, wide-scale work on health now includes research into areas more associated with hospital equipment than iPhones.

"Area scanning photomedicine device and method," US Patent No 10,617,564, is a detailed patent application which covers an extremely broad range of medical issues but chiefly does so with one purpose.

"[It is a] system and method for treating a lesion on target tissue," says the patent.

Currently, so-called superficial lesions "[meaning that] the lesion is on or near the surface of target tissue" can be treated using light. The patent lists countless applications including, for instance, photodynamic therapy (PDT) which, typically in combination with a light-sensitive drug, uses a light source to destroy cancer cells.

Light is also used in, for example, "gynecology, gastroenterology, and thoracic surgery," and Apple notes that this is far from an exhaustive list. However, Apple also notes that "although the details of the approaches vary due to the anatomical differences presented, the fundamental underpinnings are the same." And it's these underpinnings that Apple wants to address with this patent.

"[Currently] one must provide treatment light to the targeted lesion," says the patent. "To date, this has been done primarily with broad-brush application of light to the lesion and its surrounding tissue. While this has the advantage of being straightforward, it also limits the ultimate clinical efficacy by increasing the side effect profile."

In other words, the "therapies are not sufficiently site-selective," and this is a problem because the "irradiation of adjacent tissue causes more damage than is necessary." What Apple is ultimately proposing is a new system of much finer accuracy when aiming and using light treatments on lesions.

"The present invention solves the aforementioned problems by providing a multipurpose system for performing a variety of photomedical procedures that is based on contiguous scanning of a continuous wave (cw) or quasi-cw light source," claims the patent.

Apple's plan is for a device that combines different systems. It starts with a "visualization device" for "capturing an image of target tissue containing a lesion." Then when that image is acquired, it has a targeting system that combines a light source, a scanner device that can aim that light, and an overall controller.

The Apple device first captures an image that can show precisely where the boundaries of the lesion extend. Then it projects "treatment pattern onto the target tissue."

Most of the patent application's drawings are either examples of lesion patterns, or block diagrams of the combination of light source and controllers. There's no sketch of a doctor wielding an iPhone. If Apple's patent results in new hardware, it's going to be hospital-grade machinery rather than something that'll be featured in a Today at Apple store demo.

The invention is credited to Dan Anderson and David Mordaunt, each of whom have more than sixty prior patents, the majority of which are in related fields such as Anderson's "System and method for determining dosimetry in ophthalmic photomedicine," or Mordaunt's "Photomedical treatment system and method with a virtual aiming device."

The Southern Railway has asked the Divisional Railway Hospital at Tiruchi to recruit doctors, nurses, pharmacists, lab assistants, radiographers, hospital attendants and housekeeping assistants on contract basis for a period of three months in view of COVID-19 pandemic.

Based on a communication from the Principal Chief Medical Director, Southern Railway, the Tiruchi divisional railway authorities have issued a notification for the recruitment of doctors and para-medical staff at the divisional railway hospital here. The interview for these posts would be held online on different dates this month with monthly remuneration fixed for each category.

Senior railway officials told The Hindu on Friday that the plan was to recruit 36 doctors of which 27 would be general duty medical officers; three anaesthetists; three general medicine and three chest physicians. Thirty-six nurses and and an equal number of hospital attendants are proposed to be recruited. A total number of 72 housekeeping assistant would be recruited and 12 each for the posts of pharmacist, lab assistant and radiographer.

As per the notification, the online interview for the contract medical practitioners (doctors) was scheduled on April 16, while it was April 17 for the posts of nurses and pharmacist. The online interview for lab assistant, radiographer, hospital attendant and housekeeping assistant was slated on April 18. The doctors and para-medical staff were expected to be recruited before this month-end and posted in shifts, a senior official attached to the Medical Department said.

The recruitment would be done in consultation with the Divisional Railway Manager in accordance with the Standard Operating Procedure on medical matters. The existing strength of doctors at the divisional railway hospital at Tiruchi was 19. They belonged to different specialities such as Ortho, Opthalmology, Gynaecology, Anaesthesia, General Surgery, General Medicine and Paediatrics.

In the wake of the spread of COVID-19, the railway hospital here has been designated as hospital for COVID-19. An isolation ward was created at the hospital early last month. The Southern Railway administration has also stated that 110 out of the 197 beds at the divisional railway hospital here could be spared for the State government for COVID-19.

The railway administration has also made it clear that accommodation and food for the contract medical practitioners and contract paramedical staff should be taken care as they would not be permitted to go to their homes during the duty period in view of the high infectivity of COVID-19. Food could be arranged through the IRCTC or through the Commercial Department, the administration further said.

Conjunctivitis, commonly known as pink eye, has been seen in some patients, although it's rare.

But if you have pink eye -- along with other common symptoms like fever, dry cough and shortness of breath -- you should call your doctor.

On March 30, the American Academy of Opthalmology alerted doctors that patients who need to be treated for pink eyewho also have a fever and respiratory symptoms and/or have traveled to high-risk areas -- may have COVID-19. As a result, they warned doctors to cover their mouth, nose and eyes when treating these patients, and to disinfect tools and office areas well afterward.

It isnt surprising that coronavirus could cause this symptom, Dr. Richard Watkins, infectious disease physician and professor of internal medicine at Northeast Ohio Medical University, told Prevention.

Neither the CDC nor World Health Organization has confirmed pink eye as a symptom of coronavirus.

But experts say it wouldnt be surprising.

A series of paintings on inspiring figures ranging from Mother Teresa and Subramania Bharati to Mirra Alfassa, or The Mother, who founded Auroville and former President APJ Abdul Kalam has been hosted at the Gandhi Thidal as part of a campaign to raise glaucoma awareness.

The exhibition, jointly organised by Aravind Eye Hospital and Puducherry Municipality, throws light on the sneak thief of sight, which is an oft-cited epithet for one of the important causes for irreversible blindness caused by a condition where the visual nerve gets damaged because of the rise in pressure within the eye.

This disease has no warning symptoms till it reaches an advanced stage and because of its irreversible nature, it is important to get screened at the stage.

Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness and the top cause of irreversible blindness in the world. In India, more than 12 million people are affected by this disease, but only 5-10% are aware about it.

S. Sivakumar, Commissioner, Puducherry Municipality, opened the exhibition on Saturday in the presence of V. Govindaradjou, president, Rotary club of Pondicherry Elites.

The exhibition curated by R. Venkatesh, Chief Medical Officer of Aravind Eye Hospital, was hosted as part of the World Glaucoma Week, which is a joint initiative of the World Glaucoma Association and the World Glaucoma Patient Association.

According to slides exhibited at the event, glaucoma more commonly affects people beyond the age of 40. So it is recommended that everyone must have a regular eye checkup after this age.

A positive family history has been proven to be a strong risk factor for glaucoma. Strengthening family screening and bringing awareness in families and communities will help reduce blindness due to glaucoma.

As there are very few symptoms in the earlier stages of glaucoma, most people are unaware till the time they lose significant amount of vision. Early diagnosis can reduce progression of the disease and prevent blindness. Since staying informed is the first step to tackle glaucoma, there is a great need to create public awareness on the importance of periodic screening, Aravind Hospital said.

Jipmers Opthalmology department will be screening public and health care workers of the institution for glaucoma in the Eye OPD from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. from (Monday) to March 14 (Saturday). The glaucoma screening is done by checking the eye pressure by a non-contact method and examining the optic nerve using a fundus camera, Subashini Kaliaperumal, Professor and Head of Ophthalmology, Jipmer, said.

This year, the special focus is on family members (siblings and offsprings) of glaucoma patients.

WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY ST. LOUIS SCHOOL OF MEDICINE OPTHALMOLOGY PROVIDES VALUABLE FUNDING TO KIDS VISION FOR LIFE ST. LOUIS

ST. LOUIS (February 19th, 2020) Washington University St. Louis School of Medicine Ophthalmology recently provided funding to equip 1,000 students with prescription eyeglasses through Kids Vision for Life St. Louis (KVFL) mobile clinic program. Research indicates, upwards of 67% of children never see an eye doctor after the parent or guardian is notified of a vision impairment through an initial screeningdespite the school districts' continued efforts to follow-up. Barriers that prevent follow-up often include: 1) family economics, 2) lack of transportation, 3) loss of work to take a child for appointments, and 4) lack of awareness of the importance of being able to see well in order to read and learn well.

KVFL provides free vision services and eyeglasses for elementary students in low-income areas. Over 60,000 screenings are conducted annually at 175 schools in the St. Louis area.
