COVID-19 and the link between religious practices and personal health – Deseret News

Sunday, June 14th, 2020

SALT LAKE CITY In April, a Virginia pastor died from the coronavirus after telling his congregation to ignore physical distancing rules. Even after the story made national news, some religious leaders continued to defy public health orders and hold services, including a Louisiana pastor who told his church members, God gave you an immune system to kill that virus.

The next month, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warned the virus can spread easily at large religious gatherings, citing a case where two people with COVID-19 infected 35 others in March at church events in Arkansas.

Stories like these show the potential danger of holding large meetings while the coronavirus continues to claim U.S. lives and could cast religious leaders who insist on public worship in a negative light. But Harold G. Koenig, professor of psychiatry and director of the Center for Spirituality, Theology and Health at Duke University Medical Center, has some positive news for people of faith. He argues that religiousness may actually reduce a persons risk of contracting and dying from COVID-19.

According to Koenig, people who participate in organized religion or have their own spiritual practices are less likely to engage in unhealthy behaviors like smoking and drinking and more likely to have good habits like eating well and exercising. Not only can religious and spiritual involvement impact peoples physical health via their lifestyle choices, but it can also have a significant effect on their emotional well-being, said Koenig. All these factors combined can give a persons immune system a leg-up in fighting off viruses of any kind, he said.

Theres no question religion has an impact on both susceptibility to viral infections and recovery from it once youre infected, said Koenig, who was raised Catholic and now practices in a Protestant church. This just makes sense when you think about it.

However, Nicole Fisher, president of Health & Human Rights Strategies, a health care and human rights-focused advising firm in Washington, D.C., warns that religion and spirituality are not protective measures against COVID-19 on their own.

Viruses dont have any respect for religion, race, gender, politics or anything else. They look for a suitable host, and that can be anyone not taking proper precautions, said Fisher, who is spiritual but does not associate with a particular religion.

Still, there are clear links between beliefs, emotions and the body, Fisher said.

Prayer alone cannot cure you, Fisher said. But, with medical attention appropriate for how bad your illness is, prayer, meditation and faith can certainly bring a person peace of mind which can undoubtedly improve mental and emotional health, which is oftentimes linked to physical health.

More than a hundred studies have found that religious people are less likely to smoke, a habit which has a large impact on coronavirus outcomes.

According to Stanton Glantz, a professor of medicine and director of the University of California, San Franciscos Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education, research shows smoking nearly doubles a persons risk of COVID-19 disease progression, which could involve the need for critical care or death.

Glantz explained that the respiratory system has a very strong natural immune function, starting with microscopic hairs called cilia in the nose that trap viruses, bacteria and toxins. Deeper inside the lungs, cells called macrophages gobble up those things that can harm the body.

Smoking disables a lot of that immune function and makes you more susceptible to getting infected. Then if you get infected, the infections are worse, said Glantz, who added that vaping has a lot of the same effects as smoking.

According to Koenig, most research involving religion and health looks at Christianity, which promotes healthy behaviors by teaching that the body is a temple. But there are a number of studies that also examine Islam, Judaism, Buddhism and Hinduism, which all espouse similar beliefs about the sanctity of the body. Vegetarianism and yoga practices associated with Hinduism and mindfulness and breathing practices associated with Buddhism can also have direct health benefits, Koenig said.

A 2017 study by researchers from the Emory Rollins School of Public Health categorized subjects as Protestant, Catholic, Jewish, other religion or no religion. The study demonstrated a link between regular attendance at religious services with improved health and lowered mortality. They found that people who attended services frequently had a 40% lower hazard of mortality compared with those who never attended. Even those who attended services less frequently had a greater protection against mortality than those who didnt attend at all, but there were no differences by religious affiliation.

Stress increases susceptibility to viral infections, said Koenig, but individual spiritual practices and the support networks that come with organized religion can promote emotional well-being.

A big part of going to church is the social support in the community that one receives, said Carolyn Aldwin, director of the Center for Healthy Aging Research at Oregon State University. Social integration has a big effect on health outcomes.

Aldwin was raised Catholic and now attends an Episcopal church. To protect against the coronavirus, religious communities can support people who are older or immunocompromised by calling and checking in on them, or providing services like grocery shopping so they can avoid going out, Aldwin said.

The benefits of emotional self-regulation are also significant, said Aldwin, who has studied the effects of religion and spirituality on people with congestive heart failure.

When you have something like congestive heart failure, which is very hard to regulate and difficult to live with, being calmer and happier, and maybe feeling supported may allow you to experience less distress and even live longer, Aldwin said.

According to Koenig, positive emotions have the opposite effect on the immune system that negative emotions and stress have.

If you have meaning and purpose, if you have joy and satisfaction with life, if you experience a sense of peace, all of that has a positive impact on the immune system in the exact opposite way seen with chronic stress, anxiety and depression, Koenig said.

Cardiologist Dhanunjaya Lakkireddy, medical director of the Kansas City Heart Rhythm Institute, has set out to test the health impacts of one particular spiritual practice: prayer.

Lakkireddys COVID prayer study is set up as a double-blind randomized control trial, where coronavirus patients who voluntarily enroll on the website will be assigned into either a control group, or a group that will be prayed for by various volunteer religious groups representing the Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Jewish and Buddhist traditions. Lakkireddy and his colleagues plan to measure whether this remote intercessory prayer affects coronavirus outcomes like mortality, number of days in the ICU and days on a ventilator.

Lakkireddy was born into Hinduism and went to a Catholic school, but doesnt consider himself to belong to one religion in particular. He said the study required hardly any funding from the institute because he and others have all volunteered their time.

I was always intrigued by this idea of a supernatural divine power that can impact what we do as human beings on this earth, said Lakkireddy. As scientific and critical as I want to be in my thinking, the question about this divine force interested me.

But Aldwin is skeptical that any one aspect of spirituality, like prayer will prove to have a large impact on health with the coronavirus.

People who are sincerely religious have multiple things going for them, its the community which provides support, almost like a social safety net. Theres the better health behaviors, the calmness and acceptance in the face of adversity, said Aldwin. Its the whole package.

While some religious practices and belief systems may be correlated with healthy behaviors, the benefits could be instantly negated if people of faith are gathering to worship in large groups without the proper precautions, like social distancing and wearing masks. Multiple coronavirus outbreaks have been traced to religious groups, like Orthodox Jewish communities in New York or the Shincheonji religion in South Korea.

Religiousness, spirituality or faith, as in all facets of life and current health challenges, can be part of the problem or part of the solution, said Jeff Levin, University Professor of epidemiology and population health and director of the program on religion and population health at Baylor University. Where there are messages coming from the pulpit, or coming from religious leaders, telling people to ignore public health messages, I just think its incredibly foolish.

With coronavirus fatalities decreasing by the week across the country, U.S. churches are beginning to open back up. But most are trying to discourage the hugging and hand-shaking that typically accompanies fellowshipping. Some are implementing rules regarding how close people can sit in the pews, or eliminating the tradition of singing hymns because exhaling air with increased force can spread the virus farther.

Levin, who is Jewish, said he thinks these precautions are reasonable and wise.

Churches and pastors and religious organizations shouldnt be a source of anxiety for people, or discouragement, they should be supporting people and letting people know we will get through this, just a little longer, said Levin. We dont want to undo the good that weve done. There is still so much we dont know about the virus, and we are still learning that things could go south at any moment. Its not time for a victory lap at all.

AMD responds to motherboards misreporting power telemetry – Mainboard – News – HEXUS

Sunday, June 14th, 2020

Yesterday, in the wake of reports that AMD motherboard vendors have applied BIOS firmware to purposely misreport key power telemetry, AMD issued a statement to Tom's Hardware. It said that it has seen these reports, and that it is going to investigate further. The main worry is that while motherboard vendors have made these changes to squeeze the best performance from AMD silicon, a side effect could possibly be felt in processor stability or longevity.

Winding back a little, this story emanated from a hardware analysis and reporting feature introduced by the developers of HWinfo recently. The feature is dubbed Power Reporting Deviation, and in the words of the authors it "tells how much the CPU telemetry seen by the CPU differs from real world (expected) data". Furthermore, HWinfo fields an accusation against vendors, saying the deviation "is usually caused by mainboard vendor (often intentionally) providing wrong calibration data in BIOS (AGESA) to fool the CPU to run at a higher power than the limit for the SKU".

Of course the motherboard market is very competitive, better performance sells, and the manufacturers appear to be indulging in one-upmanship, by hook or by crook. In effect these motherboard vendors are secretly overclocking your AMD processor, by fiddling the data sent to AMD's Adaptive Voltage and Frequency Scaling (AVFS) algorithms.

HWinfo devs observed the above CPU power reporting deviation on a Ryzen 9 3900X running Cinebench

AMD's response is to the above revelations at this time is to soothe user-concerns. It says that while it is looking into the accuracy of the reports, AMD processors contain an array of safeguards which should still maintain CPU safety and longevity. For clarity the full statement is below:

Going forward it will be interesting to see if further investigations by AMD finds that these motherboard firmware misreporting tweaks are indeed damaging, and whether its board partners will continue to implement them now this info is in the open. Lastly, change will depend on whether AMD puts pressure on board partners to alter their behaviour.

Not so sleepless in Akita: The secrets of the Japanese prefecture getting the most Zs – The – The Mainichi

Sunday, June 14th, 2020

A person is seen walking in the streets of Akita in this file photo. (Mainichi/Kaho Shimokobe)

AKITA -- Getting a good night's sleep is essential to leading a healthy life, and in Japan it's the people of the northern prefecture of Akita who are getting the most pillow time, and the only people in the entire country to manage over eight hours in bed per day on average. The Mainichi Shimbun sat down with a sleep expert to find out their secrets.

According to the results of the Internal Affairs and Communications Ministry Statistics Bureau's 2016 "social and lifestyle basic research," average sleep time in Japan stood at seven hours and 40 minutes, while that of Akita Prefecture residents was eight hours and two minutes. Compared to those living in Saitama Prefecture, north of Tokyo, who got the least sleep at an average of seven hours and 31 minutes, Akitans snoozed at least half an hour longer.

Former Japanese Society of Sleep Research chairman and current Akita Prefectural Mental Health and Welfare Center director Tetsuo Shimizu explains that the possible main cause of longer sleep hours is that senior citizens make up a large part of Akita Prefecture's population. The Cabinet Office's 2019 Annual Report on the Aging Society says 36.4% of the prefecture's population was aged 65 and up in 2018, making it the only prefecture with a percentage higher than 35. Shimizu says one can argue that the more retired people there are, the more people there are with the time to have a proper sleep.

Shimizu also noted other rankings that appear in the Statistics Bureau's research, such as that for commuting times. Akita Prefecture placed 43rd, tied with three other prefectures including Aomori, for the second shortest time. The prefectures with the three longest commuting times -- Kanagawa, Chiba and Saitama, all bordering Tokyo -- are also the prefectures with the shortest sleep hours.

"Akita Prefecture is so far away from a major metropolitan area and it is also a major farming prefecture. Many residents probably spend only limited time on commuting," says Shimizu.

Furthermore, Shimizu points to the average bedtime of the Akitans as a factor contributing to their country-topping shuteye stats. According to one of the charts in the lifestyle research, Akita Prefecture residents go to bed at 10:33 p.m. on average, earliest in the country. The early bedtime is evidence that there are many older residents with moved-up sleep-wake cycles, and Shimizu comments, "We don't have many daylight hours in winter here and it gets freezing cold, so people would be more likely to say, 'Let's not waste money for kerosene and get in bed already.'"

Longer sleeping hours would seem to promise health benefits for Akitans. But according to the Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry's 2015 longevity list broken down by prefecture, Akita is second-last for men, at 79.51 years, and fourth from the bottom for women at 86.38 years.

Shimizu comments, "Akitans like drinking, so I suspect there are many of them who drink a lot before going to bed and just pass out. That might be negatively affecting the benefits of sleep." Backing Shimizu's claim, Statistics Bureau research on household spending in prefectural capitals and government-designated major cities showed that people in the city of Akita spent the most money on alcohol per year, averaging 55,920 yen (about $510) in 2017 through 2019, highlighting Akitans' love of drinking.

Crush: How Stadium Heroes Bon Jovi Reclaimed The Rock Scene – uDiscover Music

Sunday, June 14th, 2020

After their meteoric rise in the 80s, Bon Jovi spent most of the next decade weathering the trends and outlasting the tag of being a hair-metal band. After the hard-rockin hedonism of Slippery When Wet and New Jersey , both 90s albums (Keep the Faith and These Days) were about getting serious. There were more epics, more stories and a lot less fist-waving. Both had darker lyrics than usual, and Keep the Faith included Dry County, their first and only ten-minute track. The results were critical praise but a lower commercial profile. For the first time, the Jersey lads were in danger of a long-term career built on playing their old hits.

But Crush changed all that, rebooting the band when it arrived in June 2000. The album opens with a trio of hit singles, but there isnt a song here that wouldnt jump right out of the radio. Its really the first Bon Jovi album that doesnt aim for a unified sound, giving each track a feel of its own. They do sleek and modern, they do guitar-slinging retro, post-grunge and pure pop, depending on what a song calls for. There are also a few hints of the Americana direction theyd head in over the next decade.

Listen to Crush on Apple Music and Spotify.

Much of Crushs success can be credited to an infusion of new blood. Bassist Hugh McDonald was now settled in the band, having replaced Alec John Such in Bon Jovis first-ever personnel change a move that initially shocked fans who thought the five-way partnership was unshakeable. Another key player who took a backseat this time around was songwriter Desmond Child, who added the hit sheen to You Give Love a Bad Name and Livin On A Prayer. Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora did the lions share of writing on Crush and the main co-writer was Billy Falcon, an upstart whose only previous major credit was co-writing (with Bon Jovi) Sometimes Its a B__ch for Stevie Nicks.

Most surprisingly, theres no big-name producer involved with Crush. Hitmaker Bruce Fairbairn was set to produce before his sudden heart attack, followed by Metallica man Bob Rock who was also considered. Finally, Bon Jovi and Sambora decided to co-produce with Luke Ebbins a young guy with plenty of ideas and zero hits to his credit. The gamble paid off, and Crush came out sounding polished but fresh, with no obvious fingerprints on it.

While theres more to Crush than its hit singles, lets dive right into the hit singles. For most bands, Its My Life is the kind of song that comes along once in a career an undeniable anthem, with a universal message and an unshakeable hook. From the two pounded chords that open, it has the sparkle of a pop hit, but its also steeped in classic rock. During promotions for the album, Jon Bon Jovi freely admitted he pinched the songs title and attitude from the Animals. The lyric also namechecks Sinatra and checks in with Tommy and Gina from Livin On a Prayer turns out theyre doing fine and Sambora caps it all off with a talkbox solo, likely the last one to appear on a hit single.

The second single, Say It Isnt So, pulls off the neat trick of sounding like Humble Pie in the verses and The Beatles in the choruses, while Thank You for Loving Me is the albums obligatory ballad, this time done with real strings (and a nice Sambora riff at the very end).

Sambora does some of his best work between the lines, including a few big moments on Next 100 Years, which is a three-minute song with a four-minute coda. It starts as a catchy love song, then pulls a chanted Hey Jude-type fade before the band revs up and Sambora cuts loose. Its a live-sounding moment and tops the list of singles that should have been.

In the period leading up to the 90s and then post-9/11, Bon Jovi got political, but Crush marked the bands return to pure, uncomplicated fun. Long-haul fans doubtlessly appreciated Just Older, a rousing tune that argued hitting middle age was no big deal. And anyone who remembered the 70s had to appreciate Captain Crash & the Beauty Queen from Mars, the only Bon Jovi song that clearly nods to the glitter era. (Even the title sounds like a lost Mott the Hoople track). The finale, One Wild Night, is such a fist-waver that it became the title of a live album a year later.

But the buried treasure on Crush is I Got the Girl, tucked away toward the end. Musically it encapsulates the album, starting as moody electronic pop and then chord-slinging in the chorus. Lyrically it appears to be one more Bon Jovi song about lucking out and finding the perfect partner, until he comes up with the easy-to-miss line the Queen of Hearts will always be a five-year-old princess to me. Yes, hes singing about his daughter, pulling the same narrative trick Chuck Berry did on Memphis. Its the kind of moment that keeps Bon Jovi honest, and a little endearing: Behind all that streamlined pop and arena fireworks sits a beaming dad.

Crush can be bought here.

Marriage longevity: What’s the secret to a long, happy union? – The New Times

Friday, June 12th, 2020

Her Majesty the Queen of England and the Duke of Edinburgh looked frail and aged in the latest photo released by Buckingham Palace to mark Prince Philips 99th birthday. For a couple that has been under constant scrutiny by the public and media, and with a lot of rules to observe, it appears to me like they never or cannot remember when they last used the terms darling or sweetheart in reference to each other. It has been a lifetime of maintaining royal stature; I can hardly trace a photo of the two holding hands yet their photos date as far back as the 1940s.

As the Duke turned 99, I wondered how it has been for him to be married to 94-year-old Queen Elizabeth for 73 years a whole 73 years! There is an 83-year-old man who is thrice divorced, and in fact two of those divorces happened within 14 months.

For long, I have watched documentaries and read articles about the two. It is obvious that the husband accepted his place in the marriage and got comfortable in his skin. In some societies when a woman appears to be more successful, or enjoying a little bit more freedom, people will say the husband has been sat on, he has no say. It is possible Prince Philip heard this too but did he let it deter him? No.

The couple has lived and travelled together for long but as age caught up, Prince Philip retired from royal duties and effectively went to live at Sandrigham Estate located about 100 miles away from the Queen who resides either at Buckingham Palace or Windsor. I guess that is fine, they are an old couple. There are 45 year olds who dont share a bedroom or home.

According to royal observers and analysts, thanks to Covid-19, the Queen and her husband were reunited and have been living under the same roof for three months. It is the first time in years that they have stayed together for that long without being separated. During this time it is suspected they share either lunch or dinner together then spend the rest of the time separately carrying out individual activities, which for the Queen include receiving and reading letters as well as reviewing official documents sent to her.

What is their secret to a long marriage? One of the reasons cited is the fact that they are of differing personalities, the two of them did not try to change each other, they accepted and married who they saw and fell in love with. As prominent as she is, the Queen is more laid back compared to her husband. Whereas the present day woman or wife is a bit more confrontational compared to their mother and grandmother, it is said the Queen is much less confrontational. I picture her walking out of a room as soon as she sees Philips mood change. They also attributed the longevity of their marriage to tolerance and patience, hmmm, so 1800. No wonder divorce rates have increased the current population is less tolerant of a lot of things.

With several possible reasons advanced, I identified for me what was the most important secret to their successful marriage; it is the fact that they spend a lot more time apart than together. Stop those things of I want to see you more often. Absence makes the heart grow fonder. Spend lengthy periods without seeing each other and stay married for 73 years, in this day and age it is a huge achievement.

Reese Witherspoon: Love, Live And Bake Biscuits – Longevity LIVE

Friday, June 12th, 2020

Reese Witherspoon is an extraordinary mix of a modern-day Hollywood role model and the girl next door. My grandmother Dorothea always said that it was a combination of beauty and strength that made Southern women whiskey in a teacup. We may be delicate and ornamental on the outside, but inside were strong and fiery. We all have a lot to learn from Southern culture, she writes in her debut book, Whiskey in a Teacup.

The book has been met with mixed reviews. This is to be expected, given the difficult history of the South. However, it also enjoyed the respect many have for Reeses outspoken views and work to achieve recognition for womens rights in the entertainment industry. Most would agree, though, that she has a knack for finding joy in and appreciation of the simpler things in life: happiness, health, family, talent and beauty.

Reese is an inspiration to thousands of women worldwide because of her drive for success and female entrepreneurship. Her hands may be full, being a mother and a wife, but she has also had a wildly successful career as an actor, producer, entrepreneur, and philanthropist. How she managed to achieve so much and still carve out pumpkins for her three children on Halloween must have something to do with her Southern roots.

This is what makes her role as Elizabeth Ardens Storyteller-in-Chief so compelling, and why her March On campaign in support of UN Women meant so much more than most lipstick launches. And then there is also her Southern-inspired line of clothing, accessories and home dcor, called Draper James, which launched in 2015. Despite it all, this 43-year-old doesnt look as if she has aged a day in 30 years.

Although the actor is new to authoring books, she is no stranger to reading them. She loves reading. Her best screenings, such as Big Little Lies, Gone Girl, and the upcoming Little Fires Everywhere or Luckiest Girl Alive, are adaptations of books. Born in New Orleans and raised in Nashville, Tennessee, Reese says her Southern heritage informs her whole life. She believes your home and childhood have a major impact on the way you choose to live your life. She says sharing the gospel of Southern living is a beautiful obsession of hers. The South follows her everywhere she goes: bluegrass country music, big holiday parties, and Kentucky Derbies. Jugs of Dorotheas Sun Tea, Dorotheas Brined-and-Battered Fried Chicken, Vegetable Plate-in-a-Jar and Brother Johns Ribs. Brunches, Steel Magnolias, and monograms.

Reese always tries to find the little joys in life. Many of us spend our days on autopilot, without stopping for a moment to soak it all in. When you do this for long enough, its easy to forget who you are and that there is no place like home. No matter where you end up, its good to remind yourself where you come from.

Reese prides herself on being welcoming, hospitable and warm. She treasures friendship and holds her family and community close to her heart. However successful she gets or whatever city she finds herself in, she always returns to her roots. More importantly, Southerners never exclude anyone, and they always remember their manners. They certainly know how to throw a good dinner party!

Reese says her Southern heritage shows in how she entertains, decorates her home and makes holidays special for her kids not to mention how she talks, dances and does her hair. I bet you would never have guessed that she uses hot rollers to style her hair every day. It may be an old technique, but Reeses hair always looks fabulous.

From decorating to entertaining, cooking, dressing and taking care of her skin, Reese is a natural at looking her best. She says she has her grandmother, Dorothea, to thank for her style choices and makeup skills.

Dorothea always taught her to dress appropriately and to get out of her sweatpants by 10 oclock latest because sweatpants are for sweating in only. More importantly, she learned that you should always choose to wear what makes you feel good, rather than follow fashion trends. You also need to know how to shop for the silhouette, color, and print that suits you best. Reese is blonde, so she has bright colors in her closet and usually opts for a fit and flare silhouette. She believes your makeup should always look natural. If you have freckles, you should still be able to see them through your foundation and powder. And lipstick goes a long way. She is obsessed with lipstick. After all, it makes her feel ready for the day and the world especially red because its a powerful political symbol.

Reese believes every woman should stop looking at or following accounts on Instagram that dont make them feel good. One standard of beauty doesnt exist. Instead, women should look at people or brands that stand for different expressions of what women are.

Beauty is not just about what is on the outside; its about how you feel. She thinks a lot goes into discovering the best version of yourself, and that isnt only what youre putting on your skin and how youre taking care of yourself; its about what you are reading, too. The messages you choose to consume make you who you are.

But even Reese admits to seeing wrinkles and fine lines as you age. That is why you should moisturize and use quality products that hydrate and nurture your skin. She cleanses her skin every night and never goes anywhere without an eyelash curler. And no, your skin products dont need to be expensive. There is so much choice today.

Reese dedicates time to her skincare routine, especially at night. She does this because its a wonderful way to close every day with something that is taking care of you. Moreover, she often has to remove heavy makeup after being on set. She uses coconut oil for her eye area and then retinol before her night cream. Reese has been using Retinol Ceramide Capsules by Elizabeth Arden for a year now, which she says has significantly improved her skin tone.

She believes cleansing and moisturizing should be part of your everyday ritual. That way, you will never have to do the heavy treatments. Dont skip the small steps, such as putting on sunscreen and keeping hydrated. Click on this link for our review of the Elizabeth Arden Prevage Progressive Renewal Treatment. With resurfacing ingredients like polyhydroxy acid (PHA) and alpha hydroxy acid (AHA), this facial peel helps to improve the appearance of dullness as well as combat the aging effects of sun damage.

Success and beauty require energy. That is why you need to focus on regular exercise and a holistic diet. Reese believes you cant support beautiful skin if you forget about your diet and lifestyle. What you eat plays a huge role in how your skin looks.

She drinks liters of water and has a green smoothie every day. She tells Harpers Bazaar that this includes a generous part of romaine lettuce and spinach, with an apple and banana. Then, when she has a breakout, chlorophyll drops in water help to get rid of spots.

Exercising with friends helps her to keep motivated. Although exercising is not her favorite thing, she aims for four to five days a week. While its not easy to wake up early, she must do it in the morning. If it gets to 11 oclock there will be no exercising.

She enjoys running outside two or three days a week, lifting weights twice a week, and yoga.

At Glamours Woman of the Year gala, Reese told the audience that, coming from a male-dominated industry, she now encourages every woman to stay away from a man who cannot manage an ambitious woman. And if there is a strong voice inside telling you to start something, dont keep quiet. Work hard and try to find an environment where it can grow into a strength.

If those around you dont appreciate your strength, its time to move on. Surround yourself with people who support you. If we encourage more women to be ambitious, the world will change, she says.

This article was first published in Longevity magazines South African bi-annual edition 2019/2020

The graying of the town – Powell Tribune

Friday, June 12th, 2020

Pat Stuart

The estimates look staggering. Two-thirds of the people over 65 years of age and three-fourths of those over 75 who have ever lived in all of time are alive, right now, this moment, today.

But this is just the beginning. In another 10 years by 2030 there will be more seniors over 65 than there are children under 15. By 2050, the number of seniors is expected to double again.

The numbers appear so overwhelming that we probably can take it as a given that the basic statement about the unprecedented numbers of elders is true.

This has huge consequences for a society that currently marginalizes seniors and worships youth. As for the economy, its changing even as we speak.

Right now, according to the AARP, 83% of American household wealth is held by people over 50, while older seniors (80 and over), hog most of the wealth held by the top 1%ers.

Their impact on the economy is so powerful that its spawned a new term: the Longevity Economy.

What does this mean? For openers, the Longevity Economy age group are staying employed longer, spending more money, generating tax revenue, driving entrepreneurship and investment, and are avid consumers of recreation and leisure activities.

Are they competition for younger workers? Analysts say, no. Instead, they claim that these seniors add value to our communities by finding new ways to complement the rest of the workforce. And, of course, seniors dominate the volunteer economy, boosting a communitys social capital.

Here at home

The Longevity Economy, in fact, is changing us in Park County.

A quarter of Park Countys current total population is over 65. Since another quarter is under 18 years of age, that means the current age ratio of those contributing to our local economy is 2:1; that is two (18 through 64 years of age) to one (65 and older).

In a sense, I see myself and a lot of my friends in this picture. Some of us grew up here, were part of the local economy, and sent our children to local schools. Others, though, as much as we loved our homes here, left to find work elsewhere only returning when we had a retirement income for support. Still others visited here as tourists, loved what they saw, and made this their retirement home.

All of us, health permitting, fit the larger national picture.

We volunteer and keep many of the service organizations functioning and their missions successful. We have hobby businesses like sales of our crafts or, in my case, books. We teach our own skills to others. And, mostly, we do that without recompense to ourselves while the people we teach go on to use their new skills to earn a livelihood.

Senior spending

Perhaps most importantly, we spend. Most of our retirement income enters the state from outside sources and, then, is spread around our communities.

Were the customers that help keep local businesses afloat,

Were the majority users of health care; ones who can pay our medical bills and are responsible for the presence of a large and vibrant medical community.

Were payers of property and sales taxes that contribute to keeping our local government services robust.

Were the backbone of almost all the churches in the area, helping maintain our moral and spiritual fiber.

Consider further that most retirees have incomes that are largely protected from the current (or any other) economic slump, and all are covered by health insurance. While traditional working age families are struggling, the majority of our seniors can continue to meet their mortgage schedules, shop for groceries, volunteer, order take-out from otherwise closed restaurants, pay their bills, buy gas and pay taxes. In short, theyre a stable economic unit.

To balance the picture

Still, weve worried about the number of retirees moving into the area, giving us an unbalanced demographic. As much as our gray-haired coterie contributes to the economy, they generally arent the ones who (for example) support the schools and give us a vital educational system. They dont open and run brick-and-mortar businesses that give us a vibrant downtown. Etc.

There are good, solid reasons why every community needs a balanced age demographic.

That said, its almost inevitable that our home-grown population of seniors will double as the national figure does. We can also expect to attract more retirees. Should we discourage or encourage this?

Thats a question our leaders will be grappling with in the coming years. The trick for them is going to be to keep a balance. Gray is good. But only when well-mixed.

‘Once in a lifetime’ 20-ft. plant about to bloom in Nags Head – The Coastland Times – The Coastland Times

Friday, June 12th, 2020

Shirley Lutz has been waiting for 20 years for her century plant to bloom.

Located on S. Pamlico Way in Nags Head Cove, Lutzs century plant will only bloom once in its lifetime. The longevity of this type of plant, a member of the asparagus family, is around 25 years.

Once used for medicines, fiber, needles and food, this was an important plant for indigenous people.

The plant has grown almost overnight, according to Lutz, and now sits about 20-ft. off the ground. Lutz invites anyone who wants to come see her once in a lifetime blooming plant to drive by her garden.

Longevity Workouts: The Exercise Routines For Wellness and Long-Life – Women Fitness

Friday, June 12th, 2020

Longevity Workouts: The Exercise Routines That Promote Wellness and Long-Life :What we know about health and the natural world changes all the time. One constant is that exercise is good for the body. Everyone knows this. But some exercises are much more effective than others, for reasons we are only slowly coming to understand.

This article is about so-called longevity workouts. Exercise that is if done often and long enough keeps the muscles and our immune systems younger for longer, and may even put another decade on our life expectancies. It is also about how they work, on a molecular level, to work the way they do.

It all starts with an ancient survival mechanism, one that we and all life on Earth inherited from the earliest single-celled organisms.

Imagine the scene 3.5 billion years ago the Earth is nothing but a steamy, volcanic rock filled with rock pools and salty oceans. Inside the rock pools are the first single-celled organisms and they are reproducing and evolving, much like life continues to evolve today.

It is reckoned that one of these cells evolved an adaptation that allowed it to stop reproducing when times are hard, and hunker down and enter repair mode. So whenever disaster struck a dry period that threatened the rock pool the one cell that figured out how to hunker down survived, while everything else died.

It is now believed we are all descended from this ancient organism, and as a result we all carry within us the two functions that are reproduce or repair.

Reproduce mode is a loose word that means, when there is no immediate threat, we tend to relax; take things easy and enjoy ourselves. Repair is the opposite. Whenever we sense danger, we take action to save ourselves from the threat.

The conveniences of modern life have largely stripped away the need to be in repair mode often. We no longer have to hunt for food. In fact, food is so cheap and abundant that obesity is a major problem all around the world. The result is that we are almost always in reproduce mode. The problem is, our bodies never evolved for a life of such relative leisure, and it is detrimental to us in the long run.

According to the most compelling theory of the day, the information theory of ageing, we age due to a loss of information over time mostly through accumulations in DNA damage. Our bodies try to fight this loss by activating our so-called longevity genes. Scientists have identified seven longevity genes to this day, and they work like little first-responder teams. Meaning as soon as they detect DNA damage, they rush out to repair it.

The problem is these longevity genes work best when the body sounds the alarm for them to come out. That is, when the body is under mild stress. We put our bodies under mild stress through exercise. The problem is we dont do enough of it, and therefore we inhibit our longevity genes from repairing broken DNA and keeping us young.

Not all forms of exercise place our bodies under mild stress. A leisurely walk is great, but it does not stress the body. Neither does a casual swim or a jog if it isnt at least a bit strenuous. We put our bodies under mild stress through high-intensity training. More specifically, high-intensity interval training.

This can be as little as a 15-minute jog a day, as long as it is fitted with bursts of high intensity. But studies have shown that jogging for 30 minutes a day, five days a week can keep the body perhaps a decade younger over a lifetime.

You will know a workout is stressful when afterwards, your heart is beating out of your chest; you cant put a sentence together without stopping for breath, you are sweating, and if your breathing patterns are deep and rapid. This is known as the hypoxic response. Whenever we work out in this way, our bodies are tricked into thinking there is an emergency, and so our longevity genes kick into action. We are in repair mode.

Other conditions put our bodies under mild stress, and when combined with HIIT exercise, they can have great results. Uncomfortably cold temperatures force the body to burn energy in order to prevent our core temperatures from dropping. This also forces the longevity genes into action. So a good way to double benefit would be to exercise in the cold. Even a brisk walk around the block on a winters day will kick start the longevity genes.

Another is so-called amino-fasting while you exercise. This does not mean not having amino acids, it just means getting all of them from plant-based foods and not meat. Most meat eaters consume too many amino acids already. By eating the right plant-based foods, it is easy to get all the necessary amino acids, but the body will respond to the sharp drop of abundant amino acid intake from meat as though there was an emergency.

All of the above methods are great for inducing mild-stress. Together they are even more effective at calling out our longevity genes to repair DNA, thereby slowing the ageing process and keeping us healthier and younger.

But it is important to emphasise mild stress. Exposing yourself to the deep cold for long periods of time is not mild stress, it is very dangerous. Likewise, with amino-fasting, starvation and mal-nourishment is also very bad. It is also important not to overwork yourself through exercise, either. All you want is that mild stress feeling. Its a temporary discomfort that fades in minutes. Chase that again and again, and expect to add years of youth and health on to your life.

Cats star Francesca Hayward on fear, lockdown dancing and her return to the stage – The Guardian

Friday, June 12th, 2020

She has become one of the UKs best known ballerinas thanks to her roles with the Royal Ballet and as Victoria the white kitten in Tom Hoopers Cats movie. But Francesca Haywards new performance, filmed in lockdown, is about how it has felt to not perform at all during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Hayward is one of five dancers in a new short film, Where We Are, choreographed by and co-starring Ramberts Hannah Rudd. The stylish black-and-white piece, released online on Thursday morning, captures our thoughts and feelings at being unable to perform, unable to create, says Hayward. But also going deeper, for me, it allowed me to express my fears and concerns for my family and their health.

Hayward has already shared a number of short dance videos during lockdown in which she duets with her partner, Cesar Corrales a first soloist at the Royal Ballet so she is used to self-filming. Her contribution to Where We Are was recorded on her iPhone. The film was co-created by the producer-director Anthoula Syndica-Drummond and Royal Ballet dancer Alexander Campbell, who also appears alongside Clemmie Sveaasand Jeffrey Cirio. With the five dancers filming themselves at home, one of the major challenges was matching the lighting and frame sizes, says Campbell, who has known Rudd since they were at the Royal Ballet school. To match Rudds choreography, which he says has a wonderful honesty and humanity, an original music score was commissioned from composer Sophie Cottonand played by violinist Naomi Burrell.

Hayward said that she has been able to take online classes with the Royal Ballet over the last few weeks but that swapping the companys huge studio for her own living room has meant that it is hard to perform at the same level and maintain her usual fitness. She installed her own barre at home and has a Harlequin dancefloor square: It has been a massive help to have those two pieces of equipment. She said that it can be daunting for dancers to return to performing on stage in front of an audience and that it will take time to get back into the shape that allows us to work at our maximum. However, she pointed out that this period of rest can also be beneficial to dancers. You very rarely get anything more than a few weeks off at a time as a dancer, so to have an extended period is incredibly valuable for longevity.

Campbell says the project has bridged the gap caused by the coronavirus, enabling him to collaborate again with old friends and also work for the first time with other creatives. While venues are closed, he hopes that the many online dance films such as Matthew Bournes mini version of The Red Shoes will bring the artform to a new audience.

Art, says Hayward, can lift people in dark times and enables you to escape, enjoy, learn and explore. Like her colleagues, she is fearful of the long-term impact on the industry. With auditoriums closed, most theatres and companies have little income, she said. The uncertainty is the biggest fear for everyone involved.

On Saturday, however, Hayward and Corrales will finally return to the Royal Ballets stage for Live from Covent Garden, one of a series of free streamed broadcasts and the first live performance from the Royal Opera House since its doors closed on 17 March. They will perform a ballet interlude, newly choreographed by Wayne McGregor, as part of a programme of music. The duet has given them both positivity and hope says Hayward. It brings a freedom and relief.

Will long snapper Kam Canaday have the longevity as Greg Warren? – Behind the Steel Curtain

Wednesday, June 10th, 2020

Part 16 of our 90-part series assuming the roster does not change before we are complete which will break down each player of the Steelers current 90-man roster in alphabetical order. This series will encompass many aspects of each players game and their current role with the team. At the end, Ill give some projected stats as well as their chances to make the 53-man roster.

This time we spotlight Steelers Long Snapper:

Position: LSHeight: 6 4Weight: 245 lbsCollege: Portland StateDraft: UDFA, 2016 (Cardinals)

16 Games played

Expires in 2021

$1,135,00 salary cap number (0.57% of total cap)

$450,000 dead money

$685,000 cap savings if cut

Lock. Believe it or not Canaday actually has some competition heading into camp, linebacker/long snapper Christian Kuntz. That being said, cutting Canaday would set the team back nearly $500k so I highly doubt hes going anywhere unless he completely forgot how to snap the ball.

Hows this for expert analysis, I predict Canaday won't botch a single snap... Long snapping stats are fun... Give me a break...

16 Games played

Kameron Canaday, has been a fine long snapper for the Steelers. The best thing we can say about him is that we haven't had to talk about him since he came to the team in 2017. Much like his predecessor, Greg Warren he has been consistent and low maintenance. You can't ask for anything more from your long snapper.

Aon warns pensions not to over-react to Covid-19 mortality spike – Artemis.bm

Wednesday, June 10th, 2020

Insurance and reinsurance broker and consultancy Aon has warned UK pension schemes not to over-react to the recent short-term spike in mortality rates in the country, as the impact to longevity risk assumptions may not be as significant as it seems.Aons Risk Settlement Group, which deals with pension risk transfer, including the buy-in and buy-out side as well as longevity reinsurance and longevity swaps, says that overall the longevity markets are continuing to function effectively despite the impacts of COVID-19.

Of course, the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic has caused a significant spike in excess mortality rates in almost every country affected. In the United Kingdom the increase in excess mortality as a result of the pandemic has been among the highest, with the country perhaps the hardest hit.

Aon does not believe this warrants any significant changes in assumption over the forward-mortality rate at this time, though.

Instead, the broker cautioned UK pension schemes against over-reacting to the elevated short-term mortality data when it comes to setting their long-term mortality assumptions.

Tim Gordon, partner and head of Demographic Horizons in Aons Risk Settlement Group, explained, Were emerging from the initial wave of the global COVID-19 pandemic with no effective vaccine and with some critical aspects still unknown. Some people may therefore assume that life expectancy must have reduced, but this is not necessarily the case.

While there are potential outcomes of this crisis that could reduce life expectancy, including the possible impact of economic recession, there are also potential outcomes that could result in higher life expectancy. These could include increased spending on health and social care, and a potential hardening of the UK to future pandemics.

Pension schemes look closely at mortality rate data, modeling and indications to help in setting their assumptions related to longevity risk exposure and also funding needs.

Decisions related to entering into pension risk transfer are made on these basis, while longevity exposure drives the need for hedging and de-risking solutions to reduce exposure to pensioners living longer than anticipated.

So, with excess mortality rates having spiked due to the Covid-19 pandemic, pensions may be thinking they can reduce their longevity assumption and expect to offset longevity de-risking decisions, but this isnt necessarily the case.

Gordon continued, On top of this, the socio-economic profile of pension schemes means that their liabilities are typically partially insulated from the variations we see in national mortality statistics. Accordingly, it would be premature now to make major changes to best estimate longevity assumptions in either direction. Indeed, it is reasonable for median best estimate assumptions to remain broadly unchanged.

Martin Bird, senior partner and head of Aons Risk Settlement Group, added, Longevity markets have continued to function efficiently over the course of the crisis to date, with bulk annuities and longevity swap transactions continuing apace. Trustees and sponsors have, in our experience, taken the view that risk settlement forms part of their long-term risk management strategy and have been comfortable with proceeding with transactions, despite the turbulence from COVID-19. In fact, in some cases, agile clients have been able to take advantage of pricing opportunities, such as those arising from increased credit spreads earlier in the crisis.

More than ever, it is important for schemes to keep their wits about them when entering a potential transaction. Particular features in the current environment are the need to understand the consequences of different on-risk dates and the potential for regret risk as well as ensuring that investment portfolios are adequately stress-tested to guard against any later liquidity problems.

Reinsurance markets remain open for longevity risk transfer and pension de-risking business at this time, with this area of the market well-capitalised still and likely to continue to be for the foreseeable future.

However, the capital markets still remains ready to assist to a degree and there continues to be appetite for longevity exposure in some life ILS fund strategies.

Black Winemaker Launches ‘Love-Infused’ Wine After Loss Of Wife – Essence

Wednesday, June 10th, 2020

Breaking into the wine business is no easy feat especially if youre Black. In fact, there are only approximately 50 black-owned wineries globally, so the journey from winemaker to now president of the Association of African American Vintners was of course met with many challenges.

But none of them could stop Phil Long.

Not even a global pandemic or the loss of his wife and co-founder, Deborah, a year ago to cancer.

Through blood, sweat and tears Long was able to push their dream forward, and fulfill what they started in a garage years ago with the creation of Longevity Wines what he likes to call, a love infused brand. Now with a unique partnership with Bronco Wine Co., the makers of Charles Shaw wines for Trader Joes, Long is able to spread the love and distribute his cabernet sauvignon and chardonnay nationally.

In this interview with ESSENCE, Long shares the inspiration behind his new collection, his hopes for making the wine industry more inclusive and further plans for expansion.

You began your wine journey making wine in the garage with your wife Debra. Because Longevity is defined as a love-infused brand is it inspired by her?

The Longevity brand is absolutely inspired by Debrashe even came up with the name. When I suggested Long Family Cellars, she asked me to look around and tell her what part of our family was helping us make wine? Obviously, the name became Longevity, which is both a play on our last name and a reference to our enduring love for each other and for sharing great wine.

When Deborah and I were dating, I started giving her glass hearts for Valentines Day. Everything in her life became hearts: heart rocks, heart jewelry, heart everything. When we rebranded in 2009, I designed the current label with the intricate heart that contains more hearts along with grapevines and grapes to truly represent who we are. Today, that heart is the icon of our brand and the symbol of our love story.

What makes Longevity stand out against the rest?

Its the heart on the bottle that draws people into our love affair with wine and with each other. Then, they celebrate their own love stories with the delicious wine inside. But its not just about the brand, which has been in many TV shows and movies, its also the fact that this $16 wine competes in the rating arena with wines priced upwards of $50.

What was the creative process behind developing the Longevity collection?

At some point in our journey, we decided that we should have at least one wine named after each family member; that meant one for Debra (Deb-ru-vee), one for me (Phil-osophy) and one for our precious little Havanese pup, PressTon. We still have those three wines on the tasting menu today. They represent no less than 10 different varieties of grapes we use to blend and also to make single varietal wines depending on the quantity available. Those wines have become our signature wines.

What are the changes you feel the wine industry needs to make to be more inclusive?

The fact is African American winemakers make up only one tenth of one percent of the wine industry. In the world of statistics, that rounds down to zero. I think we need to focus on increasing awareness of the fact that African American winemakers do exist and that we produce great wines. Id like to see wineries across the country building a diverse workforce with education programs, internships and scholarships.

Whats one thing about wine that you want to educate Black people on?

In my parents house, there was this tall bottle of Chianti with a basket bowl at the bottom of it. Thats about all I knew about wine growing up. When I went to college, I didnt even know that wine was an industry or a career path. I would like to educate not only African Americans about the world of wine, but all Americans who dont have access to information about this delicacy and its industry. Wine can be a rewarding career.

How do you plan on expanding your company?

Longevity is in the fortunate position to have partnered with Bronco Wine Company to launch our brand nationally. I am now producing California wines on a much larger scale to meet the needs of a national brand. We are still producing our reserve wines in our Livermore Valley facility and every bottle of nationally distributed wine encourages customers to visit our Livermore Valley tasting room.

pandemic-restrictions-arent-stopping-us-heres-what you need to know – Longevity LIVE

Wednesday, June 10th, 2020

Pandemic trends show that despite some restrictions many countries are experiencing, were still finding many ways to move. According to Garmin trends data, yes. Most of the worlds daily step count has decreased significantly. However, this is not the whole picture, since many people have developed new routines with different types of exercises to stay active. So just because were experiencing a pandemic, it doesnt mean were sitting on our behind all day.

There has been a massive shift in the way people are moving across the globe. An earlier report by Garmin saw remarkable changes in the types of sports and exercises people were choosing to do. Moreover, Garmin states that simply looking at the step count wont tell a complete story. We know that this number is down in every country, but it doesnt necessarily mean people are exercising less. Think about it. There could be a lady who lives in a tiny flat in Italy, who hasnt been able to walk much at all. But we dont know what shes doing in her flat to keep active. For all we know, she could be cycling indoors for 20km a day. Thats why Garmin has taken this into consideration in their new pandemic trend report. In fact, it could even mean that many people are moving more.

We need to get an accurate picture of how people are moving around the world. Fortunately, Garmins wearable devices can tell us how people are moving, and not just if theyre moving. We do know that the total worldwide steps decreased by 12% in April 2020. However, steps from just workout activities increased by 24%. This means that more people are exercising but in different ways. This makes up for the suppression of normal daily movement during the pandemic.

Its crazy to think that years from today, were going to look back at this pandemic and remember April as the month COVID-19 hit us. Coronavirus extended its debilitating reach to nearly every country, culture, and community on Earth. Theres no denying the fact that the pandemic has impacted our daily lives phenomenally. Besides that, we thought it would be interesting to report back on the effects its having on human activity.

According to the Garmin report, we see a clear reflection of the pandemics crippling global power. Especially when you compare April 2020 to April last year. Aggregated data from millions of Garmin users shows a worldwide decrease of 12% in average daily steps.

Note that Garmin applied a fixed data scale to every country in the world. For this reason, results are magnified for countries with lower population counts and stricter stay-at-home orders. For example, the U.S. compared to Uzbekistan. While Uzbekistan is nowhere near the U.S. in the number of coronavirus cases. It has a bigger percentage decrease because there are fewer people and stricter lockdown rules.

Although the data shows were not walking as much as before, we are moving quite a bit. People are keeping fit during this pandemic, by completing home workouts and other forms of activity to compensate. We cant deny the fact that its certainly become a lot more interesting when it comes to exercise. People are demonstrating a lot of creativity.

We can see that theres a clear reduction in general movement, but when we take a deeper look at the data. Things get a bit more enticing. Garmin reports that a portion of these total worldwide steps come from uploaded activities like running, cycling and hiking. With 20 built-in activity apps on Garmin devices, they were able to accurately detect this data.

This means that if we look at just the steps coming from these logged activities. We can find the opposite trend. On average, steps from logged activities were up 24% worldwide. To sum up, people have started to engage in unique exercise activities to make-up for lost steps in their everyday routines. Not bad for being locked in your home due to a pandemic.

Whether its true, pandemic or not, come hell-high-water, people are getting their exercise in.

The question remains, what is everybody doing to stay fit during the pandemic?

Based on the data, its clear that Garmin users are turning to activities that are most viable depending on their geographic location. Some of these activities are highlighted in our previous post on pandemic trends inthe U.S. and Europe. However, this new data gives us a complete global picture.

The picture below shows activities that saw the largest increase in each country. This is when we compare April 2020 to April 2019.

From what we can see, it seems that most countries have taken to indoor cycling. Apparently, Australians and Canadians both seem to agree that walking is the best activity during life in quarantine. But China, Mexico, South Africa and a handful of other countries have all turned to fitness equipment workouts. But what kind of fitness equipment workouts? Garmin says that indoor cardio accounts for 50% of these workouts. Last year duringDuring the same time period, over 50% of the activities in this category were strength training. Thats very interesting, the pandemic has definitely forced people to make adjustments to their usual routine.

Remember when everybody was raving about strength training? Well, now we have to adapt and look into doing some more cardio too. Moreover, this shift indicates that weve made a shift from gym-structured workouts to home-based find-a-way workouts. Although its evident that a vast majority of people cycle indoors, Garmin took it a step further. They decided to consult a couple of Garmin pro athletes to collect some qualitative context. Interestingly, they said that certain areas like France are not able to cycle outside. says U.S. triathlete Taylor

As a result of the pandemic, many who never did indoor cycling are now doing it five times per week.

The triathlete also said that many athletes are spending more time on platforms like Zwift. He said that their training group meets once every 2 weeks to do a session together. Its a great way to keep yourself motivated to keep moving when having regular virtual sessions. Moreover, its a wonderful way to remain in contact even if it is only once a week. This is particularly important if youre used to meeting regularly with your training group of workout buddies at the gym.

Whilst the pandemic has pushed humanity toward some activities, it has decisively turned it away from others. In a previous article that focused on European trends, it noted that swimming had all but disappeared. As we compare April 2020 to April 2019, this looks to be a global trend too. The data shows significant decreases in swimming activity from the Americas to the Far East.

However, this doesnt mean that swimmers are just sitting all day. The data shows that in Australia 54% of the users who swam in April 2019 are instead running outdoors in April 2020. Then in China, 43% of the users swamin April of last year they were either running or cycling outside this year. In the U.S., pro triathletes are keeping up their fitness by working hard at home. Since most public pools are closed, theyre doing more gym-based strength workouts. If youre a swimmer, then you can even try to replicate some movements and muscle patterns of swimming.

When it comes to multisport training, hiking and golf theres been a massive decrease in multiple countries. But like swimmers, these guys are looking for alternatives. For example, in South Africa, 20% of the users who were golfing in April 2019 turned to indoor fitness workouts in April 2020. And then another 11% began indoor cycling.

The consensus seems to be that people are using this time to their advantage. Particularly if youre an athlete, wed imagine youre using this pandemic to prepare your body for when sports return. Its important to try to maintain your usual activity levels even if it means trying something new.

In conclusion, its obvious that we are finding a way to move no matter what. From the mainstream to a professional athlete, people are adapting routines but clearly not stopping them. If youre a runner but used to enjoy running with your teammates, then try listening to some podcasts or audiobooks while you run. Theres always a way to work around this pandemic.

Hold tight guys, team sports will return eventually. But for now, finding other ways to move on your own is your best bet. Fitness is just one of millions of routine adjustments being made around the world.

Snacking all day, making constant trips to the fridge? Yeah, we totally get where youre coming from.
