Does Cannabis Help Patients With Rheumatoid Arthritis? – Cannabis Health Insider

Inflammation, although a life-saving immune response, can also range from unpleasant to downright life-threatening. When a body is injured or infected, the white blood cells rush to the affected area to release signaling proteins for protection, while also pushing out potential pathogen, and then start the healing process.

However, blood flow and spark fluid secretions are increased by these proteins, which cause redness, swelling, and pain, which is inflammation. Inflammation is commonly caused by the false identification of harmless substances, even our tissues, by the immune system, which in turn produces painful and often chronic conditions like arthritis, ulcerative colitis, skin conditions, asthma, and general soreness and joint paint.

Mass-market drugs by the dozen are used for the treatment of inflammation, including over-the-counter aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen, that although reliable and effective, carry side effects. Furthermore, herbal and natural remedies have also gained popularity in recent years.

However, even the most popular inflammation treatments have their side effects such as ulcers, liver damage, and kidney damage that can be caused by taking high doses of Advil with the active ingredient ibuprofen, over long periods.

Furthermore, fluid retention, high blood pressure, mood, and memory swings, and hormonal imbalance, can be caused by steroids even in the short-term.

Meanwhile, all kinds of inflammation are shown to be alleviated by medical cannabis, which also works in ways that are different from conventional drugs. Cannabis compounds have been shown to suppress cytokines and chemokines the inflammation-causing proteins, unlike the hormone-mimicking steroids and ibuprofen, which works by blocking prostaglandins (released in the brain in response to injury).

National Institutes of Health funded a comprehensive scientific peer review that was published in the journal, Future Science, in 2009, that explained that compounds in cannabis can identify when and where the immune system is over-reacting, and can hence help down-regulate those responses at the site instead of throughout the body.The effectiveness of cannabis in particular for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), is singled out in the review. This disease, not limited to, can include ulcerative colitis and Chrohns disease.

Regulation of the tissue response to excessive inflammation in the colon has been shown by cannabinoids. The results suggesting the modulation of the physiological activity of the cannabinoid system during colonic inflammation could potentially be a therapeutic tool for the treatment of several diseases.

130 clinical studies that mostly involved lab mice, and similar academic reviews and papers are cited by the review. The review concludes that receptors in the endocannabinoid system, are found on the immune system, which is why cannabinoids can play an important role in the regulation of the immune system.

Despite the promising research, clinical trials involving humans have not been performed. Dr. Sue Sisley, the pioneering medical researcher with a groundbreaking study of cannabis for PTSD, has also shown agreement to the general findings of the 2009 review. Sisleys research, placebo-controlled, blind clinical study that involved more than 70 former US soldiers for their response to cannabis therapy, will help understand the effect of cannabinoids on inflammation in the human body.

According to Sisley, although they have not quantified the degree of anti-inflammation, drawing blood for markers for inflammation, and measuring it pre-treatment and post-treatment, can help see if cannabis has an impact on the inflammatory process.

The results of Sisleys research will not be revealed until it is completed later this year or early next. However, a positive outcome could cause renewed interest in further exploration of the development of cannabis therapies for inflammation, including the different consumption methods, strains, and terpene profiles that will be best suited for certain types of inflammatory response.

However, Sisley has explained although it is believed that strains high in the terpenes Myrceneand Pinene may have the highest anti-inflammatory effects, there is no proper evidence to support this.

Fasting is a deeply spiritual experience sanctioned by the Islamic faith, but medical experts also point out neurological and nutritional benefits for the human body and brain.

For centuries, Ramadan, the Islamic holy month in which the faithful fasts from sunrise to sunset, brings a lot of joy to Muslims worldwide.

Dating back to the 7th Century, scientific evidence suggests that the month of fasting has health benefits, which is much needed at this time amid the deadly pandemic.

If an individual cares about having a regular sleep, a regular nutrition and other regular movements of life, he/she will capitalise on the benefits of fasting in Ramadan more than others, said Murat Alemdar, an associate professor of neurology at the Medical School of the Sakarya University.

But for people with erratic lifestyles and sleep and nutritional disorders, they will have a limited benefit package from Ramadans fasting, Alemdar says.

Alemdar has conducted extensive research on how fasting affects the activities of the human brain, concluding that it offers major benefits for people to conduct a healthier life.

Ramadan: A helping hand to the brain

Since ancient times, scientists from different faiths and backgrounds have long argued that fasting could help metabolism renew itself, triggering a detoxification process in the human body.

This reform process could be even more true for the functions of the human brain as fasting could lead to the release of the brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), which is crucial to produce stem cells.

These cells are the essential units of human metabolism working pretty much as the bodys repair department with their potential to regenerate and repair damaged tissue. They also produce new white blood cells, empowering the immune system against the bodys external enemies.

There are links between fasting and increasing levels of secretion in the BDNF activity, augmenting the production of brain stem cells, Alemdar told TRT World, saying that more brain cells will also help the centre of the nervous system function better.

Fasting also helps the brain rest in a period when other organs of the human body such as the stomach are less in use because eating, drinking, smoking and other related activities come to a halt in Ramadan, according to Alemdar.

In a period, when less nutrition enters the human body, leading to other organs to send much less signals to the brain [where more than 100 billion nerves communicate with each other constantly to ensure the body to function in a proper sense] and help it rest a little more than other times, Alemdar said.

In a spiritual sense, the brain also rejoices when the nervous system believes that something important for life has been fulfilled by fasting, Alemdar says.

Its known that feeling peace due to a fulfilled mission in a field of worshipping brings tranquility, creating positive effects in the human brain, Alemdar underlined.

Increasing mental focus

Ramadans mental focus also helps the brain function better because fasting is not just about making a halt on nutrition habits and sexual activities but also about staying away from negative thinking and reimagining our life, relations and family matters in a spiritual way, according to experts.

Fasting liberates the brain from many other daily activities, increasing the prospects of its concentration on essential functions in the nervous system, Alemdar observed, citing reduced anxiety in Ramadan.

But he also advises that fasting by itself is not a free-ride for mental health and its stabilisation, urging people to plan their time carefully between iftar, when fasting ends with an evening meal, and sahur, a pre-dawn meal, after which fasting begins.

We need to standardise both our sleeping and nutrition patterns between iftar and sahur. If our body is accustomed to a good Ramadan routine, it could help our brain function better, Alemdar suggests.

In Ramadan, Muslims wake up at midnight for sahur to eat and as a result, their sleep is divided. But it shouldnt mean sleep deprivation, Alemdar says, strongly advising people to stick with their regular sleeping hours even in Ramadan.

People might take Qailulah as Muslims call it, or siesta sleep as others call it, which is a short midday nap, relieving the brain for the implementation of its functions, Alemdar suggests, reminding that sleep is essential as much as food.

Beyond the brain, fasting also helps other organs of the human body.

Fasting and its benefits for good nutrition

Fasting also improves the digestive system because the body will have a rare opportunity year-around to detoxify internal organs as the spiritually-alleviating dieting forces the body to use fat reserves to keep operating in the absence of nutrition, killing harmful toxins stored in fat deposits in the process.

In our daily lives, because we consume so much food, our body spends a lot of time digesting them. During fasting, the digestive system works less, allowing the body to focus on other areas like strengthening the immune system and diminishing the levels of infections, says Ceren Kucukvardar, a Turkish nutritionist.

Fasting can also help the body fight conditions like oxidative stress, which can increase the possibility of cancer, slowing the speed of the spread of cancer cells, Kucukvardar observes.

But for many nutritionists, the most important gain of fasting could be weight loss, according to Kucukvardar.

When you take less food, it means you also decrease the levels of insulin, [a hormone, which controls the amount of sugar in the blood], reducing fat, Kucukvardar told TRT World.

For people who observe Ramadan, the conditions of their liver also improve significantly as fasting decreases its fat, Kucukvardar says.

According to various studies, fasting helps people lower their LDL cholesterol and reduce their excessive fatty tissue, decreasing the possibility of heart-related diseases and strokes.

We have a hormone in our body called adiponectin, which is important both protecting our heart health and keeping our glucose levels low. According to some studies, fasting increases this hormone, says Kucukvardar.

As a result, we can say that fasting protects the health of our heart, Kucukvardar says.

But she also warns that fasting people need to be careful about their eating habits during Ramadan.

If we have too much food intake during iftar, it could lead to stomach and intestine diseases, she cautions, suggesting thatiftarshould be divided into two different periods.

First, eat low-calorie foods like soup and cheese and then have a break like 15 minutes. After that, move to the main course, she advises.

More Than Meets the Eye: Veterinary Ophthalmologist Wendy Townsend Focuses on Animal Eye Conditions – Purdue Veterinary News

At least 2 billion people around the world have vision problems but how do you know if and when your pet is struggling with its own eyesight? Its a good question, especially in a year numbered 2020.

Dr. Wendy Townsend, associate professor of ophthalmology in Purdue Veterinary Medicines Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences, has focused her career and research in veterinary medicine on diagnosing and treating eye conditions in animals. The most common question I get is if we fit animals with glasses, Dr. Townsend says. While thats not what we do, our goal is to help animals see better and improve their quality of life if theyre having issues.

Although her patients span a variety of species, her research is focused on a particular breed of dog that reigns as one of the most popular dog breeds in America: golden retrievers. Golden retriever pigmentary uveitis is a disease almost exclusively found in purebred golden retrievers. Its an inherited form of uveitis (inflammation of the uveal tract, which includes the iris). And though the disease is inherited, the onset and diagnosis usually occurs when the dogs are older.

The disease can often result in blindness due to cataracts and glaucoma, and there are no current methods to prevent or reverse it. Mild symptoms, such as redness and drainage, usually dont appear until the dog is around eight years old and can progress to an advanced stage before dogs see a veterinarian, Dr. Townsend says. The disease affects about 10% of senior golden retrievers.

Dr. Townsend is leading a study that is trying to identify the gene that causes the disease. If the gene can be identified, the disease can be detected earlier, and breeders will be able to identify which of their dogs might be carriers and how they can keep the disease from being passed on to future generations.

The problem breeders are facing right now is that even if theyre being responsible and making good decisions, they dont know their dog is affected, Dr. Townsend says. They can be several generations down their pedigree before they know theres a problem.

Dr. Townsend grew up owning golden retrievers and was completing her residency in veterinary ophthalmology when the disease was first recognized. It was bizarre because nobody could understand why it was happening in this specific breed, Dr. Townsend says. But since I loved golden retrievers and had a passion for ophthalmology, it seemed like a natural fit.

And although the disease presents itself primarily in purebred golden retrievers, Dr. Townsend explains that it can appear in some crossbreeds especially Labrador and golden retriever crosses. That becomes a concern because Labrador and golden crosses are frequently used as seeing-eye dogs, Dr. Townsend says. And because the disease doesnt show symptoms until these dogs are older, they could be struggling with their own vision and you might not even know.

Thats why Dr. Townsend says having dogs screened especially service dogs is critical. The earlier you can catch something, the better, Dr. Townsend says. That goes for all vision problems with any animal.

As a veterinary ophthalmologist, Dr. Townsend says its not uncommon for her to see dogs from across the country affected by golden retriever pigmentary uveitis. In addition to those patients, she commonly sees animals with corneal ulcers (scratches on the eye), cataracts, and glaucoma. Her patients include mostly dogs, horses, and cats but she also has treated penguins, tigers, and other exotic species.

And although she doesnt fit animals with glasses, she has fitted a dog or two with contact lenses. Theyre usually dogs that participate in agility and have trouble focusing or struggle with nearsightedness.

Sometimes animals struggle with the same eye problems that people do. Theyre just not as good at telling us when something is wrong, Dr. Townsend says. She consistently encourages pet owners to be cognizant of their pets eye health for that very reason.

Animals are good at compensating when something isnt working right. So if one eye is bothering them, theyll just rely more heavily on the other eye, Dr. Townsend says. And most of our pets dont need to have super-sharp vision to lead normal everyday lives. But in some cases like with dogs that participate in agility being able to focus both near and far is important.

As Dr. Townsend continues her mission to solve the mystery behind golden retriever pigmentary uveitis in addition to seeing her patients she hopes she can build some awareness around the field of ophthalmology. The eye might be small, but its a powerful organ that we all use and it allows me to work across a wide variety of species, Dr. Townsend explains. I frequently have clients tell me, I had no idea this was an option, or, I didnt know there were eye doctors for dogs. The impact this field can have on our patients and their quality of life can be significant.

How this drum major overcame vision loss and marched his way to success – Advocate Media

Just a few weeks ago, Rafael Martinez Salazar was looking forward to the last stretch of senior year. The Innovation, Design and Entrepreneurship Academy that Rafael attends in Old East Dallas had a lineup of senior activities to celebrate the end of a long and stressful academic journey.

Then the coronavirus hit.

Dallas ISD schools closed for the year, jeopardizing milestones that have become rights of passage for graduating seniors across the United States. The likelihood that students will get to toss their caps in a commencement ceremony seems to diminish every day.

Im like, Are you serious? Its the last part of senior year, Rafael says. Its supposed to be fun. Im not going to get to do all this stuff. Thats messed up.

Rafael may feel cheated, but hes following the rules. Hes staying home and logging in to Google Classroom, where his teachers take attendance and post assignments. He can complete his work in just a few hours.

Distance learning is all right, but I liked it better when it was physical, Rafael says. After a while, it gets boring. Its like, What do I do now? I take a walk to take my mind off it.

The next few weeks will be full of uncertainty for seniors as graduation, summer school and financial aid hang in the balance of factors beyond their control. Whatever happens, Rafael knows he can overcome any obstacle. Hes been doing it all his life.

Rafael has had vision problems for as long as he can remember. As a child, he struggled to read the letters during a vision test at school. He met with an eye specialist, and on his 11th birthday, he was diagnosed with Stargardtdisease, a degenerative disorder that causes progressive vision loss.

There is no cure or treatment, but there are resources. During school, Rafael sits at the front of the class, and his teachers provide him with large-print worksheets. For online assignments, he uses the accessibility options on his phone and computer to enlarge the font.

He manages so well that most people dont know he has a disability. That doesnt stop unassuming folks from asking why he holds his phone so close to his face. Sometimes, he just doesnt feel like explaining.

I just say I dont have my contacts in, Rafael says.

Rafael has coped with the stigma of being visually impaired since childhood. While other kids tried to tear him down by calling him names, Rafael focused on his strength.

It didnt kill me, he says. Its like, Youre trying to knock me down because Im doing something right.

The senior is in the top 10 percent of his class academically, and last fall, he landed the coveted role of drum major at his home school. The position relies heavily on sight, but using the beat, Rafael memorizes the steps and directs the band when to play.

Becoming drum major was a yearslong dream for Rafael, who joined the band in middle school. The first instrument he learned to play was the saxophone. Since then, hes taught himself to play eight instruments, including the French horn, trumpet, piano and guitar. He sight-reads using oversized sheet music, then memorizes the piece until it becomes second nature.

Sometimes you have dreams for your kids, and sometimes they cant always be realized, says Christian Haley, Rafaels instructional support specialist. He could use his disability as an excuse, but he doesnt. I know hes going to advocate for himself and get the help that he needs.

This fall, Rafael plans to attend the historically black university Prairie View A&M on a full-ride scholarship. He wants to play in the Marching Storm while majoring in music education and minoring in music production. Hes got his sights set on becoming a band director or a music producer who creates hit radio tracks.

My disability doesnt mean I cant do something just as good, if not better, Rafael says. My mom would tell me, Youre not supposed to let this stop you. Things dont just happen for no reason. Youre going to be great one of these days.

BATON ROUGE New Saints quarterback Jameis Winston, who signed a one-year contract for $1.1 million last week, was interviewed by area reporters on a Zoom teleconference on Wednesday.

Winston was the first pick of the 2015 draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers out of Florida State and was their starter for five seasons.

The complete question-and-answer session follows:

JAMEIS WINSTON: Who Dat?

QUESTION: "Could you talkabout suppressing your ego to come to New Orleans to be the backup for Drew Brees?"

WINSTON: No, I dont think I ever said anything about an ego check. I think I mentioned humility, and one thing about humility is everyone needs to be humble. I started from very humble beginnings. Its another chapter in my life that Im going to learn from, and its going to make me better.

A New Vision: Jameis Winston has improved eyesight and vision

QUESTION: "Was this the best fit for you?"

WINSTON: "We have a Hall of Fame quarterback (Brees) and a future Hall of Fame coach (Sean Payton). Thats very intriguing for a young quarterback like myself. And also Ive been playing against this defense for the past five years, and they continue to get better and be dominant. This is a Super Bowl-contending team, and Im just happy to be a part of that.

QUESTION: "Who did you talk to about your decision to come to the Saints?"

WINSTON: "It was a little bit of everybody. During this time, Ive got married (on March 27 to Breion Allen of the New Orleans area). Ive had numerous conversations. Ive been doing a lot of different things. A lot of people have helped me with this decision. It really was easy in terms of knowing the quarterbackroom that I was going to be in. Understanding that I love this game with all my heart despite a lot of different things that come with this game like money and celebrity status.

Opinion: NFC South just got a lot more interesting

"One thing that Derrick Brooks (Pro Football Hall of Fame member who played at Tampa Bay and Florida State) taught me in mytime at Florida State to now is youve got to respect the game. The game will always be bigger than you, and the game will always win. In my experience as a professional football player, the game has won. I just want to honor that and be a part of this organization and be in the quarterback room thats as prestigious as the one that we have now. And be the best football player, be the best teammate I can possibly be.

QUESTION:"What is your relationship with Drew Brees?"

WINSTON: Theres only a few people in this league that actually follow up with you when you ask them a question, when you reach out to them.The first time I met Drew (laughs) was in 2006. I was one of the the first kids to get his autograph."

Winston, who is from Bessemer, Alabama, in theBirmingham area, met Brees when Brees was in Birmingham concerning his surgery with Dr. James Andrews, who repaired Brees'torn labrum on his right, throwing shoulder in January of2006before his first season with the Saints. Winston was 12at the time.

WINSTON: "And I met Drew again during pre-draft back in San Diego (in 2015) athis home base, and we got a chance to talk at a church. Ever since then, hes always been a guy that I can hit up during the season and ask a question, and hell get back with me. I just love the person he is, and the guy that he is, and Im so excited to learn from him and help serve him in anyway.

QUESTION: "Do you still have the Brees autograph?"

WINSTON: I lost that Drew Brees autograph. It was a Hoover Bucs football picture that he autographed for me. And I had a wallet one of those big, fat wallets that people dont have anymore. And I lost it. I think I lost it on the bus. It didnt have any money in it. Aint nobody got rich, but they got my picture.

DOUG MILLER (Football communications director and teleconference moderator): Well work on getting you another one.

QUESTION:"What do you feel like you need to get done this season?"

WINSTON: What I need to get done is I need to be a great teammate. I need to serve our team and I need to be competing every day. One thing I do take pride in is being competitive, and Im going to do my best to be the best football player I can be. This sport, even though Im coming to New Orleans (as a backup), I still love this game. And were going to play a lot of football, and were going to win a lot of games.

QUESTION:"What are the specific aspects of the game you need to improve?"

WINSTON:Yeah, every year I have a different set of goals and set of things I want to get better at. But one thing that Im really excited to learn the most exciting thing is just the way that this quarterback roomfunctions. Whats Coach Paytons approach to every week?Whats Drews approach to this week?What is Taysom (Hill) doing in the room that I can add to my game? Just trying to find different things by serving this team and learning from everybody that I can. Even from Doug (Miller) in the meeting room, just trying to learn as much as I can to be the best I can be.

QUESTION: "You had other offers for more money and with options to start, right?"

WINSTON: "Yes. I did. But Im a New Orleans Saint, and thats what my focus is. I think this was definitely one of the best opportunities for me to grow as a quarterback and as a professional in this league. So, Im going to do my best to take full advantage of this opportunity that was presented to me.

QUESTION: "Were you ever not the guy?"

WINSTON: Every day Im learning from someone else. This isnt going to be relatively new. The only thing thats going to be new is that Im not the guy. But to myself, Im still the guy. Im going to approach every day like Im the guy, and I think thats what that quarterback room brings up. When you see what happened last year with the amount of playing time that Taysom and Teddy (Bridgewater) got. Im not saying that Im going to expect that this year, but those guys were prepared.

"And thats what Im going to be. Im going to be prepared for whatever. Being a quarterback, you have to be a student of the game. So, now I actually get a chance to dive into that more. And I actually have a Hall of Fame quarterback that Im learning from, opposed to trying to learn by myself or use Google."

QUESTION: "Did you talk to Teddy Bridgewater?"

WINSTON: Yeah, I talked to Teddy, and Im really just talking to him because Im so happy for the opportunity he has in Carolina and the chance to compete against him twice a year. I talked to him, and he really loved the quarterback room. That was one of the big things. How they work and the things he was able to learn and apply to his game to make him a better leader and a better quarterback.

QUESTION: "Will you be setting yourself up for a future outside the Saints or here?"

Trader Sean: Getting Tommy Stevens in the 7th round tooksubterfuge

WINSTON: "Yeah. Im focused on the primary opportunity to get to work with Drew Brees, Sean Payton, Taysom Hilland Tommy Stevens (7th-round quarterback choice in the draft) and Coach Joe Lombardi (quarterbacks coach) and Coach PeteCarmichael (offensive coordinator), and Coach D.J. Williams (offensive assistant) that is my opportunity. Thats the biggest and most important opportunity that I have right now, and Im definitely not looking forward or looking ahead, right? Im focused on this, what I got right now. Well have that conversation next year or years down the road. Who knows? I didnt think I was going to be in this position at this time last year. But God had a different plan, and Im excited for the plan that he has for me now moving forward.

QUESTION: "Did you pursue a starting job with other teams?"

WINSTON: "I think anybody thats been a starting quarterback in this league, they want to have an opportunity to compete and be the starting quarterback inthis league. But when you really think about the progression of a football player, when you have an opportunity to be in the same division, to work with a coach who is as successful and as smart as Sean Payton, and work with a quarterback who will be whenever he decides to retire, hes going to probably get escorted to the Hall of Fame.

I dont think really you can beat that, regardless of what it is, especially if you believe in yourself. If you believe in the ability that you have and you believe, and really if you have faith that you will become a starting quarterback again, you take this opportunity in a heartbeat to work with these amazing group of men.

Opinion: The virtual draft was something to watch

QUESTION: "Do you look at the second careerof a quarterback like Ryan Tannehill (who left Miami and became the starter at Tennessee)?"

WINSTON: Yes I do. I do draw inspiration from that. It shows his resilience. It shows the other quarterbacks' ability to put things behind and press forward. I was watching the movie 'Onward'with my son the other day. And thats just an amazing word, Onward. And thats what Im doing. Im pressing onward, and like I said Im going to do my best to be the best quarterback I can be for this organization and help serve my teammates.

QUESTION: "Is improving on turnovers (interceptions), is that No. 1? Or are you unapologetic in that you're willing to take some risks?"

WINSTON: Yeah. Ball security is the primary part of our position, but also getting the ball to ourguys and getting the ball in their hands so they can make some plays. Its the most important piece. Im going to address every part of my game. Not just one part, because my goal is to be a perfectionist. My goal is to work and actually apply work so we can get results. And thats what Im working for.

QUESTION: "How has the recent laser surgery on your vision helped?"

WINSTON: Listen, no blurriness, and I think thats huge. Depth perception has increased tremendously. And those are the big things. I didnt have bad eyes. I just had those. I had astigmatism. I had certain things that they had to fix to increase the precision and the sharpness of my vision. And thats the biggest thing. I can say this. When youre riding in a car, lets say you get into an accident, but you cant read the license plate of the person who you just hit, and they just ran off because they didnt have insurance, right? Stuff like that. Like I can read license plates. I can read street signs. I think the precision in the vision is the biggest difference.

QUESTION: "And how are you after the knee surgery (for a torn miniscus)?"

WINSTON:Yeah, it was a scope, man. Youve got to check out my Instagramand see me working out, bro. You got to follow me. Follow me on IG.

QUESTION: "You've lost some weight in the off-season?"

Opinion: To Sean Payton, the draft is always in Vegas

WINSTON: Well, Im going to tell you a funny story, OK. Dont get too comfortable with this because you're new to me, so Im going to share a story with you all.The place that I had my surgery was in Birmingham, Alabama, and I got a chance to work with a physical therapist that Drew is very familiar with Kevin Wilk. This is actually the same place that I met Drew and got his autograph for the first time. Working with him, Kevin, really inspired me to just focus on being as healthy as I possibly can.

"And Dr. (Jeffrey) Dugas, who performed the surgery on me, Ive known him since I was 12 years old. He said, Hey man, we want you to get as healthy as possible, and this is a great time to work on your body, work on getting everything else up underneath you because you had this tear for three years. And now its time to just heal up your whole body. Eat great food.' So, I decided to go Vegan (vegetable diet). Ive been Vegan for the past three months, four months. And its just changed my body drastically. I do cheat every Saturday. Ill eat some chicken or something. I cant be Superman. Id be like 210 pounds. But I think those two individuals really inspired me to just use this time recovering from my knee and focus on my body, focus on how I can be the best athlete, best quarterback I possibly can be.

QUESTION: "What do you think about having the Superdome crowd now pulling for you instead of against you?"

WINSTON: "Man, Im so happy. Because the Superdome gets rocking, and just being from Alabama, being a Southern kid, you know football is really, really important. If you dont like football in Alabama, they'd probably send you back with the stork that dropped you off. But we love football. And New Orleans fans, they love football. And the funny thing is, my wife, her entire family is from Louisiana the New Orleans area. So, shes just so happy. And if you have a happy wife, you have a happy life. So, thats pretty big.

QUESTION: "What about being teammates with your former division rivals?"

WINSTON: Ive seen Demario Davis. Ive seen Cam Jordan. Ive seen numerous New Orleans Saints players at the Christian athletic conference that the NFL hosts every year. And Im great friends with those guys, but its different when youre competing.

QUESTION: "Do you feel like fans know who you really are?'

WINSTON: I dont know. I cant really answer that question. But thats one thing that Ive just been trying to do is try to let the fans know who I am via social media, and let them see me.

QUESTION: "Do you feel like you've matured?"

WINSTON:It all starts with my faith. And I know Ive grown closer to my lord and savior, Jesus Christ, tremendously. And thats what really just leads the pack, just living for Gods glory, and not for the approval of the Man, or the approval of anyone else. My main focus is to serve my lord and savior to the best of my ability. I know Ive grown and matured. And Im also a father. Being a father to a 1-year-old son that looks just like you, and you have to make an imprint on his life, teaching him and showing him how to have character and how to act when no one is looking. And I have a wife who I have to love and cherish, and I plan on doing that.

"One thing my trainer always talks about is, 'Being a better man can make you a better football player, but being a better football player would not make you a better man.' I think I really am learning and mastering. Thats an every day thing. No one is perfect. I do believe that being a better man has made me a better football player.

QUESTION: "How do you feel about Brees as someone who helps teammates?"

WINSTON: Its who he is. Its his essence. When youre who you are, you cant really avoid that. And thats just the person that he is. A God-fearing, courageous, high-character, elite quarterback, Super Bowl-winning quarterback, Super Bowl MVP, future Hall of Famer, father, husband, great teammate Drew Brees. Thats him.

QUESTION: "What jersey will you wear?"

WINSTON: I want No. 2, honestly. Thats the number I want. Hopefully. Thats my favorite number. I couldnt get No. 2 at Florida State because of Deion Sanders. And couldnt get No. 2 in high school, one of my receivers had it. And now I can, if its available.

MILLER: "That's going to do it."

WINSTON: "Thank you guys. Thank you for being available. Thank you for accepting me. I look forward to our relationships together, and appreciate you.

What coronavirus crisis means for blind and partially sighted people – The Conversation UK

If a well-meaning neighbour offered to do your lockdown shopping, would you be brave enough to ask for a bottle of sherry and a bag of cheese and onion crisps? Visually impaired campaigner Anna Tylor did just that, as she describes wryly on her blog.

Anna was struggling to get her usual supermarket delivery slot as blind and partially sighted people in the UK are not classified as clinically extremely vulnerable so are not automatically entitled to food parcels, priority supermarket deliveries or help with basic care needs.

Aside from diabetes, the commonest causes of visual impairment in Europe are age-related macular disease, inherited retinal diseases, and glaucoma. These conditions affect only the eyes and do not cause greater susceptibility to COVID-19 or any other communicable disease. But consider the challenges faced by a visually impaired person going to a supermarket during lockdown.

Most people registered as sight impaired have some vision. With magnifiers or high powered glasses they can often read price labels and packet descriptions but only from a couple of centimetres. Many use smartphone apps to read printed text aloud, or barcode scanners to identify products. Braille readers need to touch packets to read labels.

These techniques maintain independence in normal times. Now, though, many visually impaired people are concerned by having to touch multiple items, moving them closer to their eyes, and spending longer in a potentially virus-laden environment.

Supermarkets usually allow a staff member to accompany a visually impaired person around the shop. Now, though, this would mean spending more time in close contact with a potential asymptomatic carrier. Social distancing is even more difficult for people with reduced hearing as well as bad eyesight. It is far harder to hear someone from two metres away than from 50 cm, and there are worrying reports of tactile interpreters for deafblind people not being available in healthcare settings.

Kelly Carver, a man in his 50s who has progressively lost vision due to retinitis pigmentosa, told me about social distancing with a white cane.

I guess as a low vision person, I have the right of way and people need to heed the 6ft distance from me. Still, thats not particularly comforting. I dont want to foist that upon others.

At home, people who cant see well and live alone face challenges in reading use-by dates, checking cooking instructions on a food packet, or making sure theyre taking the right dose of medication.

Those with tech skills and good internet connections might use video-calling, artificial intelligence apps such as Seeing AI or crowdsourced assistance like BeMyEyes. Inclusive design means new technology has been widely adopted by people with visual impairment. However, people without these devices might rely on volunteers from sight loss charities, many of which are no longer offering home visits.

But some people with visual impairment dont want to have special dispensations made for them. A fit and healthy 21-year old woman who happens to have poor vision may not want to be included on a list of the most vulnerable people in the country.

When only one in four blind or partially sighted people is in employment, and nearly 40% of visually impaired graduates are out of work, classifying people who dont see well as being in need of more support might send the wrong signal to employers and wider society.

Anna Tylor is worried about the competing needs of people at high clinical risk from Covid-19 and those vulnerable from sight loss:

Im horrified that disabled people have been displaced by vulnerable groups, thus creating a two tier vulnerable system.

Some help is available. If people with visual impairment can get through on the phone to their supermarket they can ask to be put onto a priority delivery list. Staff in shops will still help on request, usually separated by the length of a trolley.

The London Taxicard scheme has been extended to pick up and deliver essential supplies. Neighbours, communities and mutual aid groups will help with essential shopping and safe social contact.

How can you best help someone with visual impairment during lockdown? #AskDontGrab, as blind Twitter users emphasise. Give people distance if you think theyre struggling to see you. Dont shout at people who accidentally encroach on your space. Announce who you are, and tell people when youre leaving so they dont end up speaking into thin air.

EOTech’s Holographic Weapons Sights Are Simply Amazing – The National Interest

While good eyesight and a steady hand have always been crucial in marksmanship, there have been plenty of tools that have given the shooter an edge. One of the most important could be the "Holographic Weapons Sights" (HWS) developed by Michigan-based EOTech.

Back in 1996, the company which evolved from a non-profit research institute first developed a prototype holographic-based weapon sight for use in U.S. Army helicopter gunships and anti-aircraft artillery systems. Then in 1993 ERIM formed the Michigan Development Corporation (MDC) to commercialize technology that could be spun off as for-profit subsidiaries and in 1995 this lead to the creation of EOTech.

This led to the first-generation HWS, which was marked under the trade name Bushnell HoloSight a product that won the Optic of the Year Award from the Shooting Industry Academy of Excellence. In 2001 the military and law enforcement communities adopted the HWS sights, and in 2005 Special Operations (SOCOM) and the United States Marine Corps chose HWS as their standard close combat optic.

Advantages of HWS

The primary advantage of HWS is that it provides an extremely fast and easy target acquisition for operators in the field, and this includes both eyes open for engagement, which allows for full peripheral vision and situational awareness something that is crucial for those in combat situations. The sight's anti-reflective coatings and flat front window further minimize image distortion and muzzle side reflection, while the sights also offer optimal off-axis usage when proper cheek weld or sight alignment isn't possible.

HWS technology has an advantage over standard "Red Dot" sights the latter utilizing an LED light source and reflex sight. The HWS system instead is built around a laser diode, folding mirror, collimating reflector and holographic grating. The holographic reticle can even continue to function when the window is broken or obscured, something no other sight can do.

The HWS also utilizes a "Speed Ring" reticle, so that the outside to outside of the circle equals a 5-foot 9-inch man at 100 yards. The all-weather sights are water-resistant to thee to 10 meters depending on model, and will perform in temperatures ranging from -4F to 1224F.

Unlike most Red Dot sights, HWS is also night vision-compatible, offers a wide field-of-view, even when used with a helmet or weapon-mounted night-vision devices. An NV toggle button also allows operators to instantly switch from NV to daylight to the last setting used. The sights offer adjustable reticle brightness with 30 settings for NV models and 20 for all non-NV models.

Commitment to Quality

The Southeast Michigan company was acquired in 2005 by L3 Technologies, one the world's largest defense contractors with more than $9.6 billion in sales in 2017. EOTech is also the only consumer facing division and it currently operates out of a 30,000 square foot facility that is truly a mix of traditional assembly line production utilizing skills workers with high-tech quality control to produce truly cutting edge products.

Part of the Michigan-based company's commitment to quality was to repair its reputation and trust with customers following the civil fraud lawsuit that involved defective rifle sights. That included parent company L3 Technologies paying $25.6 million to settle a lawsuit that accused the defense firm of reportedly knowingly selling optics that failed in extreme temperatures and humid weather conditions. In 2017 the company even held a voluntary buyback of sights, and the defective products were then sent to be crushed and destroyed.

Im afraid I have some bad news, dear readers. I think Steve Martin put it best when last I heard him in concert 40 some years ago. Near the end of his flawless and hilarious standup set, he said, Well, I think weve all managed to have a pretty good time tonightconsidering were all going to die.

Yes, in the midst of trying to figure out what the mortality rate is for the Wuhan Virus when we have no damn idea what the denominator is, I must remind you that the mortality rate for everyone currently alive is 100%. I know. Bummer. It appears that the underlying condition that guarantees eventual death is being mortal. Who knew?

And so we must do the best we can to make what time we have count. Love God and your fellow humans; eat often and well; laugh a lot; do something useful and productive; connect with friends; have some babies; be kind; try to stay healthy and happy.

It appears that the cunning plan I had to avoid the death that took my maternal Grandfather when I was six I just wont close my eyes may be ineffective after all. On the other hand, my plan to be blessed with good genetics for longevity is panning out nicely. My other three grandparents lived well into my early adulthood and my own parents both lived to 95, with Daddy still soldiering on, going for a family record. His paternal grandmother lived to be a thorn in her daughter-in-laws side to the age of 96. She was a rock-ribbed Republican who received an autographed framed photo of President Kennedy on the occasion of her 90th birthday. She hung it in a closet. Face to the wall. And thats IF the Wuhan Woes do not prevent handymen from getting access to the property. And IF building materiel is in stock! Amazingly, the driver was not seriously injured.

So here we geezers all are, worried about an unpleasant, sometimes lethal virus. We are hiding in our houses with masks, gloves, hand sanitizer, and 300 rolls of toilet paper. Then it turns out that our house is the least safe place we could be when a deranged old lady Joe Bidens somewhat less senile sister? guns her vehicle and, with a long blocks running start, rams it full speed into our abode. What are the chances?

Meanwhile, controversial reports appear that suggest that house-hiding is actually preventing the herd immunity that apparently is a good thing, and the reason your Mom made you go play with the kids you didnt even like who had the Chicken Pox.

We just dont know what will get us and that makes us anxious and crabby. Its a capricious world. A high school classmate did two tours in Vietnam, came home to our safe little Minnesota village, and ran off the road and hit a tree. Killed instantly.

On the other hand, when my aunt was in her 60s, she had a routine complete checkup at Mayo Clinic in Rochester. She was shocked when a doctor told her she had an inoperable heart valve issue that would likely lead to her death within two years. Naturally, she found this news very upsetting and spent most of those two years being anxious and depressed. It turned out that that doctor was only off by a couple of decades, so no harm, no foul. She died a few weeks before she turned 90. It wasnt even from the heart valve, but from a fall.

Respected medical personnel flaunting medical degrees in stuff like epidemiology and infectious diseases and never forget that SOMEBODY was last in every class at med school tell us that we have a couple of options: EITHER we have to test 330 million people twice a day, minimum, before we can ever go eat in restaurants again OR, maybe we must all hide under our beds until nobody anywhere on Planet Earth ever has the Wuhan Flu again. Your mileage may vary, as it did with the prediction by Walzing Matilda, Minnesota Governor, that he was determined to lower the anticipated Minnesota deaths from 74,000 to 50,000 by destroying the economy. So far, there have been 343 deaths, so, well done there!

It may seem like a trivial point to some, but when your government lets out hardened and dangerous criminals so they dont get flu very nearly including the Green River serial killer who murdered 48 women but sends undercover sting operatives to suss out illegal nail painters and hairdressers, it may be time for a massive coordinated march on every statehouse. With masks and gloves and six feet apart, it goes without saying. Heck, Antifa already has set the precedent with masks.

Where would you be more safe than in a nail salon where the nail lady is wearing a mask?

My hair takes care of itself. It is in a long ponytail held by one of 10,000 scrunchies I own in vibrant colors. Its color is what some might erroneously call Grey when it is clearly Platinum Blonde. My husbands hair, on the other hand, is beginning to bear more than a slight resemblance to Buckwheats. Or Albert Einsteins. But you know whose hair is perfectly coifed and colored? Every single moronic news-head and politician! What a lucky coincidence.

Evidently, THEIR hairdressers are Essential Personnel, but ours can go fly a kite. Just not outdoors. Alone. On a beach. Ya basta! Enough, already! Let our people go. Out.

Meanwhile, on the same day, Fauja Singh quietly celebrated his 109th birthday in the UK. Born in 1911, Fauja Singh has lived through two World Wars, the Great Depression, the Indian fight for independence, and the Cold War. In 2004, Fauja Singh was chosen as the face of Adidas, replacing David Beckham.

Born in Punjab, Fauja is the worlds oldest marathoner. At the age of 92, Singh ran a marathon in 5 hours 40 minutes, having taken up running only when he was 89. In 2011, Fauja Singh became the first 100-year-old to complete a marathon. Even now, Fauja says he walks at least 5 miles a day after a hernia finally put a stop to his marathon running.

Last year, in a different sport, Serena Williams became the oldest Grand Slam finalist in Open Era tennis history. At 37 years 291 days, Williams joined the 37-year-old Roger Federer in the Wimbledon finals. All three of Federers last Grand Slam trophies have come after the age of 35. Closer home, Sachin Tendulkar was 40 when he played his last Test innings of 74 against the West Indies in 2013.

Sports can offer parallels to situations that we face in our personal and professional lives. Thinking of the longevity of some of the worlds most remarkable athletes during these times made me think of the longevity of businesses too, especially during a crisis.

Sportspersons like Serena and Federer have shown remarkable endurance in staying at the top for decades in a highly competitive sport. Athletes like them are built to last. But its not just talent that has made them last these years.

Their fitness is not mere genetics, even though their skills are unique. Hours of hard work, relentless hours of practice, and a constant desire to hone their skills have made them endure the best of times and the worst of times.

Founded in 578 AD, Kongo Gumi in Osaka, Japan, is the oldest continually operating company in the world. This construction company specializes in building Buddhist temples. I hadnt thought a company could be that old! Companies such as Bofors and Saint Gobain were established in the 16th century, and as I scrolled down that list, I came across increasingly familiar names.

In India, companies such as the Wadia Group, State Bank of India, the Tata Group, Aditya Birla Group, Shalimar Paints, and more have been around for more than 100-300 years.

They were there before the internet, air travel, automobiles, and before televisions. And they are still here now in the times of Snapchat, Facebook, supersonic jumbo jets, luxury cars, and smart TVs.

These are not companies that have barely made it. No. Some of them are giant companies that have constantly reinvented themselves and remained at the forefront of innovation. They have adapted to every situation possible to stay current. They have survived wars, depression, plague, booms, busts, rebellions, revolutions, political upheavals, and more in the process.

Clearly, theres something we can learn from companies that were built to last. Take GE, for example. The company is the only one still listed in the Dow Jones Industrial Index from 1896. Its power to endure comes from its range. Throughout its history, GE has constantly added and exited different business segments. This diversification and divestiture have helped the company stay afloat despite constant market and business fluctuations.

When you look at the list of the worlds longest-surviving companies, you will find that they have strong guiding principles that quickly become living history in these companies. Their purpose and values are defined by those principles. They are led by the right strategic vision and adherence to fundamental values through the ages.

The key values that stand out for me from these companies are: heritage, value, flexibility, and adaptation.

So, how do you build a startup that will last? All long-lasting companies had strong founders who made building the company their life mission. Over time, they created strong organisational structures and built their philosophy into the foundations of the business.

Founders need to dream of growing their companies beyond the startup phase.

Building companies that last requires creating operating guidelines in mind:

Leverage cash flow: The oldest-surviving companies all understood the importance of money in an old-fashioned way. They knew how useful it is to have spare cash all the time. Crucially, they pursued growth within their means, practicing fiscal discipline.

It may seem like empty advice, but startups, I believe, should always be thinking about cash flow.

Cash is important to come out of any crisis stronger and thriving.

Invest in innovation: Long-lasting companies also focus on pragmatic innovation. They are paranoid about innovation. They have taken capital-efficient, well-thought-out risks to drive innovation consistently and creatively.

Indias digital revolution has been led by a dramatic rise in innovation. The ArogyaSetu app is a wonderful example of pragmatic innovation with more than five crore downloads just 13 days after its launch. Without an internal commitment to innovation, I believe that even the strongest brands in the fastest-growing industries will eventually face immense difficulties and wither.

Adapt to the times: Learning from the worlds longest-surviving companies shows that they changed with the times. They remained aware of the environment around them, and embraced change, instead of opposing it.

Barclays, for example, started off in the 16th century as goldsmith bankers. But its the same brand that launched the UKs first debit card and introduced the worlds first ATM in 1969. Quite a change from being goldsmith bankers!

Kongo Gumi, as I wrote earlier, specialised in building Buddhist temples. But during World War II, when funds were low, the company switched to making coffins to survive.

Whenever there is new customer behavior, there is an opportunity to think about doing your business differently.

Twinings, which has been around for 300 years, produced such high-quality tea that Queen Victoria gave the company a Royal Warrant for tea in 1837.

Long-standing companies focus on building long-lasting relationships with customers and partners.

A startup needs to focus on delighting customers - client satisfaction cant be lost while scaling.

Building strong processes means your business is protected from any eventualities, like a drastic drop in revenue as triggered by the current pandemic or even the exit of a key member of the top management.

And we can move through these extraordinary times, too, when we learn, adapt, and embrace this change. For that, we have the timeless weight of history to guide us.

Though improved medical care and knowledge has helped people live longer and healthier lives, there still arent many that live beyond a century. According to a recent study, just 0.0173% of Americans live to 100.

These people from around the world have all lived well beyond that, beating the odds to achieve long lives. Each centenarian or super-centenarian (those who live beyond 110) on our list shared their tips for longevity.

From daily eating habits to exercise routines, these are their tips for a long life.

Misao Okawa was born in 1898 in Japan. Japan has the most centenarians in the world. According to the Japan Times, in 2018, the country had 69,785 people over 100, nearly 90% of whom were women.

In 2014, Guinness World Records recognised Okawa as the worlds oldest living person. She cited eating sushi and getting a good nights sleep as the reasons for her long life.

Morano was born on 29 November, 1899, in the Piedmont region of Italy. She told the BBC that she believed her long life was partly due to genetics, but she also ate a diet of three eggs a day, two of them raw, for more than 90 years.

Morano didnt have an easy life her only son died at just 6 months old, and she had an abusive marriage. She believed leaving her marriage in 1938 contributed to her longevity. She told the New York Times, I didnt want to be dominated by anyone.

Morano was alive in three centuries, and before her death on April 15, 2017, she was believed to be the last living person born in the 19th century.

Weaver was the oldest living person in the United States from her 116th birthday on July 4, 2014, until her death in her home state of Arkansas in April 2015. She was also the worlds oldest living person for less than a week before her death.

She told Time that her secret to long life was kindness, but she also attributed it to not drinking or smoking, and getting plenty of sleep. Additionally, she didnt have any chronic health conditions, a rarity for people of her age.

Gallan was born in Aberdeen, Scotland, in 1906, and died in March, 2015, at age 109.

In an interview with STV News, she said, I also made sure that I got plenty of exercise, ate a nice warm bowl of porridge every morning, and have never gotten married.

Imich was born in Poland on February 4, 1903. He moved to the United States in 1951 after surviving the Holocaust and a Soviet gulag.

He told the New York Times that he believed his long life came down to genetics and exercise. I was a gymnast. Good runner, a good springer. Good javelin, and I was a good swimmer, he said. He also never drank alcohol, which he believed was another contributing factor.

He was given the title of worlds oldest man by Guinness World Records at 111 years old on May 8, 2014, and held the title until his death on June 8, 2014.

Veillard was born on February 28, 1907, in Haiti. He was married in 1932, and he and his wife, Jeanne, moved to the United States in 1968.

USA Today interviewed the Veillards, one of the oldest living couples, in 2015. At the time, Jeanne was almost 105 and Duranord was about to celebrate his 108th birthday.

He told USA today that his secret was waking up early each day to do five to seven push-ups before eating a healthy breakfast of oatmeal and fresh fruit. The couple would also have fish and vegetables for lunch and dinner.

Duranord died at age 111 in June 2018, and Jeanne died just a few months later, in November of that year, at age 108.

Jeralean Talley was born in Montrose, Georgia, in 1899. She moved to Michigan in the 1930s, where she spent the rest of her life until she passed on June 17, 2015.

According to USA Today, Talley was very religious, and her friends and family said she lived by the motto treat people how you want to be treated.

She told Time that her secret to a long life included her devout faith, as well as a diet rich in pork, including pigs feet and ears.

Bernardo LaPallos family believe he was born on August 17, 1901, in Vitoria, Brazil. Both his parents lived long lives his father reached 99 and mother lived to 105. He died on 19 December, 2015, at age 114.

LaPallo was known for his healthy lifestyle books, where he shared how he lived such a long and healthy life.

In an interview with National Geographic, he said, My longevity is due to my obedience and moderation. I have based my life on following what my father told me. He also said eating plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, going to bed early, and exercising kept him healthy.

He also shared his daily routine: I get up at 3:30 or 4 in the morning, go for my walk, take my shower, rub my body down with olive oil, make my breakfast. Stress is a killer, my daddy told me that. Its important to take time to relax and exercise your brain, such as by doing crossword puzzles.

Jiroemon Kimura was born on April 19, 1897, in Kyoto, Japan. In 2012, at 115, he became the worlds oldest living person and held the title until his death on June 12, 2013.

In an interview with the Guardian, he said his secret to a long life was watching his food portion sizes, waking early in the day, and reading newspapers.

He told Patch a few other ways he kept healthy for so long. Its important to make daily exercise a discipline, he said. He also cited overcoming adversity as something that made him strong. After every storm, peace always comes, he said.

According to his papers and reportedly verified by the Indonesian government, Mbah Gotho was born in December 1870. However, the country only started recording births in 1900, so the topic remains up for debate.

Gotho told the BBC that his long life was due to his loving family. He was a heavy smoker until his death, and outlived four wives, 10 siblings, and all of his children.

Calment is believed to have been born in Arles, France, in 1875. However, some doubt has been cast on this date, as many researchers cite her age at the time of death as statistically impossible. Nevertheless, she remains the official oldest person to have lived.

According to the New Yorker, she smoked for most of her life, only quitting at 117, five years before her death. She also drank a glass of port every night. She also thoroughly enjoyed chocolate. Calment passed on August 4, 1997, of unknown causes.

Jones was born on July 6, 1899, in Lowndes County, Alabama. She was the third of 11 children. She moved to New York in the 1920s, and although she never had any children, she remained very close with her siblings and their children.

According to Insider, at 115, Jones was still eating bacon and grits for breakfast, and she cited bacon as a food that helped her live a long life. She also ate a lot of fruit. Additionally, her niece said that she never drank, partied, or did drugs.

However, more than anything, it was a loving family that kept Jones alive so long, as they cared for her and visited every Sunday.

All patients were treated under an emergency Investigational New Drug (IND) application or expanded access protocol at Mt Sinai hospital. 75% of the patents successfully came off ventilator support within a median of 10 days, in contrast to only 9% of ventilator-dependent COVID-19 patients being able to come off ventilators with standard of care treatment and only 12% survival in ventilator-dependent COVID-19 patients at two major referral hospital networks in New York during the same time period. These poor outcomes are consistent with earlier published data from China where mortality rates of over 80% were reported in patients with COVID-19 and moderate/severe ARDS.

The remarkable clinical outcomes in these critically ill patients continue to underscore the potential benefits of remestemcel-L as an anti-inflammatory agent in cytokine release syndromes associated with high mortality, including acute graft versus host disease and COVID-19 ARDS, said Mesoblast Chief Executive Dr. Silviu Itescu. Where did Covid-19 come from? What we know about its origins – The Guardian

Why are the origins of the pandemic so controversial?

How Covid-19 began has become increasingly contentious, with the US and other allies suggesting China has not been transparent about the origins of the outbreak.

Donald Trump, the US president, has given credence to the idea that intelligence exists suggesting the virus may have escaped from a lab in Wuhan, although the US intelligence community has pointedly declined to back this up. The scientific community says there is no current evidence for this claim.

This follows reports that the White House had been pressuring US intelligence community on the claim, recalling the Bush administrations pressure to stove pipe the intelligence before the war in Iraq.

A specific issue is that the official origin story doesnt add up in terms of the initial epidemiology of the outbreak, not least the incidence of early cases with no apparent connection to the Wuhan seafood market, where Beijing says the outbreak began. If these people were not infected at the market, or via contacts who were infected at the market, critics ask, how do you explain these cases?

Two laboratories in Wuhan studying bat coronaviruses have come under the spotlight. The Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) is a biosecurity level 4 facility the highest for biocontainment and the level 2 Wuhan Centre for Disease Control, which is located not far from the fish market, had collected bat coronavirus specimens.

Several theories have been promoted. The first, and wildest, is that scientists at WIV were engaged in experiments with bat coronavirus, involving so-called gene splicing, and the virus then escaped and infected humans. A second version is that sloppy biosecurity among lab staff and in procedures, perhaps in the collection or disposal of animal specimens, released a wild virus.

The scientific consensus rejecting the virus being engineered is almost unanimous. In a letter to Nature in March, a team in California led by microbiology professor Kristian Andersen said the genetic data irrefutably shows that [Covid-19] is not derived from any previously used virus backbone in other words spliced sections of another known virus.

Far more likely, they suggested, was that the virus emerged naturally and became stronger through natural selection. We propose two scenarios that can plausibly explain the origin of Sars-CoV-2: natural selection in an animal host before zoonotic [animal to human] transfer; and natural selection in humans following zoonotic transfer.

Peter Ben Embarek, an expert at the World Health Organization in animal to human transmission of diseases, and other specialists also explained to the Guardian that if there had been any manipulation of the virus you would expect to see evidence in both the gene sequences and also distortion in the data of the family tree of mutations a so-called reticulation effect.

In a statement to the Guardian, James Le Duc, the head of the Galveston National Laboratory in the US, the biggest active biocontainment facility on a US academic campus, also poured cold water on the suggestion.

There is convincing evidence that the new virus was not the result of intentional genetic engineering and that it almost certainly originated from nature, given its high similarity to other known bat-associated coronaviruses, he said.

The accidental release of a wild sample has been the focus of most attention, although the evidence offered is at best highly circumstantial.

The Washington Post has reported concerns in 2018 over security and management weakness from US embassy officials who visited the WIV several times, although the paper also conceded there was no conclusive proof the lab was the source of the outbreak.

Le Duc, however, paints a different picture of the WIV. I have visited and toured the new BSL4 laboratory in Wuhan, prior to it starting operations in 2017- It is of comparable quality and safety measures as any currently in operation in the US or Europe.

He also described encounters with Shi Zhengli, the Chinese virologist at the WIV who has led research into bat coronaviruses, and discovered the link between bats and the Sars virus that caused disease worldwide in 2003, describing her as fully engaged, very open and transparent about her work, and eager to collaborate.

Maureen Miller, an epidemiologist who worked with Shi as part of a US-funded viral research programme, echoed Le Ducs assessment. She said she believed the lab escape theory was an absolute conspiracy theory and referred to Shi as brilliant.

While the experts who spoke to the Guardian made clear that understanding of the origins of the virus remained provisional, they added that the current state of knowledge of the initial spread also created problems for the lab escape theory.

When Peter Forster, a geneticist at Cambridge, compared sequences of the virus genome collected early in the Chines outbreak and later globally he identified three dominant strains.

Early in the outbreak, two strains appear to have been in circulation at roughly at the same time strain A and strain B with a C variant later developing from strain B.

But in a surprise finding, the version with the closest genetic similarity to bat coronavirus was not the one most prevalent early on in the central Chinese city of Wuhan but instead associated with a scattering of early cases in the southern Guangdong province.

Between 24 December 2019 and 17 January 2020, Forster explains, just three out of 23 cases in Wuhan were type A, while the rest were type B. In patients in Guangdong province, however, five out of nine were found to have type A of the virus.

The very small numbers notwithstanding, said Forster, the early genome frequencies until 17 January do not favour Wuhan as an origin over other parts of China, for example five of nine Guangdong/Shenzhen patients who had A types.

In other words, it still remains far from certain that Wuhan was even necessarily where the virus first emerged.

The pandemic has exacerbated existing geopolitical struggles, prompting a disinformation war that has drawn in the US, China, Russia and others.

Journalists and scientists have been targeted by people with an apparent interest in pushing circumstantial evidence related to the viruss origins, perhaps as part of this campaign and to distract from the fact that few governments have had a fault-free response.

The current state of knowledge about coronavirus and its origin suggest the most likely explanation remains the most prosaic. Like other coronaviruses before, it simply spread to humans via a natural event, the starting point for many in the scientific community including the World Health Organization.

Further testing in China in the months ahead may eventually establish the source of the outbreak. But for now it is too early.
